  • Most statistical designs, such as orthogonal designs and optimal designs, are based on a specific statistical model. It is very often that the experimenter does not completely know the underlying model between the response and the factors. In computer experiments, the underlying model is known, but too complicated. In this case we can treat the model as a black box, or model to be unknown. Both cases need a space filling design. The uniform design is one of space filling designs and seeks experimental points to be uniformly scattered on the domain. The uniform design can be used for computer experiments and also for industrial experiments when the underlying model is unknown. In this paper we shall introduce the theory and method of the uniform design and related data analysis and modelling methods. Applications of the uniform design to industry and other areas are discussed.

  • This study proposes a sensitivity analysis method for slope stability based on the least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) to examine the influencing factors of slope stability. The method uses LS-SVM as an algorithm for machine learning. An appropriate training dataset is established according to the slope characteristics, and a testing dataset is designed orthogonally. Results of the testing data in the experiment design are calculated after training using the LS-SVM model. The sensitivity of the slope stability of each factor is examined via gray correlation analysis. The results are consistent with those of the traditional Bishop analysis and can be used as a reference for optimizing slope design.

  • The primary mirror system in a satellite camera is an opto-mechanically coupled system for a reason that optical and mechanical behaviors are intricately interactive. In order to enhance the opto-mechanical performance of the primary mirror system, opto-mechanical behaviors should be thoroughly investigated by using various analysis procedures such as elastic, thermo-elastic, optical and eigenvalue analysis. In this paper, optimal design of the bipod flexure mounts for high opto-mechanical performance is performed. Optomechanical performances considered in this paper are RMS wavefront error under the gravity and thermal loading conditions and 1st natural frequency of the mirror system. The procedures of the flexure mounts design based on design of experiments and statistics is as follows. The experiments for opto-mechanical analysis are constructed based on the tables of orthogonal arrays and analysis of each experiment is carried out. In order to deal with the multiple opto-mechanical properties, MADM (Multiple-attribute decision making) is employed. From the analysis results, the critical design variables of the flexure mounts which have dominant influences on opto-mechanical performance are determined through analysis of variance and F-test. The regression model in terms of the critical design variables is constructed based on the response surfaceanalysis. Then the critical design variables are optimized from the regression model by using SQP algorithm. Opto-mechanical performance of the optimal bipod flexure mounts is verified through analysis.

  • In this study, an experimental study was performed to evaluate the concrete breakout strength of cast-in-place(CIP) anchors in cracked concrete under static shear loading. The CIP anchors involved in this study were 30mm in diameter with an edge distance of 150mm and an embedment length of 240mm. The experiment was carried out for two specimens in uncracked concrete and three specimens in cracked concrete orthogonal and parallel to the direction of shear loading, respectively. Compared to the uncracked concrete specimen, cracked specimen orthogonal to the direction of shear loading showed no reduction in the concrete breakout strength and that parallel to the load direction about 91% strength which corresponds to 84% of uncracked concrete strength defined in ACI 318-11. Therefore, the experimental results showed smaller decrease in the shear resistance of CIP anchors in cracked concrete than that specified in ACI code which account for 71% strength of uncracked concrete in cracked concrete.

  • In order to improve the 0.35 $mutextrm{m}$-via hole etching process the etching characteristic of the gas $C_2F_{6}$ has been analyzed. The samples were triple-layer films(TEOS/SOG/TEOS) on 8-inch wafers and the orthogonal array matrix technique was used for the process. The equipment for etching was the transformer coupled plasma (TCP) source which is a type of high density plasma(HDP). This experiment showed the etching rate for $C_2F_{6}$ was 0.8 $mutextrm{m}$/min-1.1 $mutextrm{m}$/min and the measured uniformity was under $pm$6.9% in the matrix window. The CD skew comparison between pre and post-etching was under 10% which is an outstanding results in the window of profile in anisotropic etching. There was no problem in C2F6 with the flow rate of 20sccm, but when 14sccm of $C_2F_{6}$ was supplied there was a recess problem on the inner wall of SOG film. Consequently the etching characteristic of $C_2F_{6}$ shows a fast etching rate and a very wide process window in HDP TCP.

  • In the current design process for the lower arm used in automobile parts, an optimal solution of its various design variables should be found through exploration of the design space approximated using the response surface model formulated with a first- or second-order polynomial equation. In this study, a multi-level computational DOE (design of experiment) was carried out to explore the design space showing nonlinear behavior, in terms of factors such as the total weight and applied stress of the lower arm, where a fractional-factorial orthogonal array based on the artificial neural network model was introduced. In addition, the tolerance robustness of the optimal solution was estimated using a tolerance optimization with six sigma constraints, taking into account the tolerances occurring in the design variables.

  • The mature landfill leachate, which is characterized by a high concentration of ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3$-N) and humic acid (HA), poses a challenge to biotreatment methods, due to the constituent toxicity and low biodegradable fraction of the organics. In this study, we applied bioaugmentation technology in landfill leachate degradation by introducing a domesticated $NH_3$-N and HA resistant bacteria strain, which was identified as Bacillus cereus (abbreviated as B. cereus Jlu) and Enterococcus casseliflavus (abbreviated as E. casseliflavus Jlu), respectively. The isolated strains exhibited excellent tolerant ability for $NH_3$-N and HA and they could also greatly improved the COD (chemical oxygen demand), $NH_3$-N and HA removal rate, and efficiency of bioaugmentation degradation of landfill leachate. Only 3 days was required for the domesticated bacteria to remove about 70.0% COD, compared with 9 days' degradation for the undomesticated (autochthonous) bacteria to obtain a similar removal rate. An orthogonal array was then used to further improve the COD and $NH_3$-N removal rate. Under the optimum condition, the COD removal rate in leachate by using E. casseliflavus Jlu and B. cereus Jlu increased to 86.0% and 90.0%, respectively after, 2 days of degradation. The simultaneous removal of $NH_3$-N and HA with more than 50% and 40% removal rate in leachate by employing the sole screened strain was first observed.

  • Long-span suspension bridges have tunnel anchor systems to maintain stable cables. More investigations are required to determine how closely tunnel excavation beneath the tunnel anchor impacts the stability of the tunnel anchor. In order to investigate the impact of the adjacent tunnel's excavation on the stability of the tunnel anchor, a large-span suspension bridge tunnel anchor is utilised as an example in a three-dimensional numerical simulation approach. In order to explore the deformation control mechanism, orthogonal tests are employed to pinpoint the major impacting elements. The construction of an advanced pipe shed, strengthening the primary support. Moreover, according to the findings the grouting reinforcement of the surrounding rock, have a significant control effect on the settlement of the tunnel vault and plug body. However, reducing the lag distance of the secondary lining does not have such big influence. The greatest way to control tunnel vault settling is to use the grout reinforcement, which increases the bearing capacity and strength of the surrounding rock. This greatly minimizes the size of the tunnel excavation disturbance area. Advanced pipe shed can not only increase the surrounding rock's bearing capacity at the pipe shed, but can also prevent the tunnel vault from connecting with the disturbance area at the bottom of the anchorage tunnel, reduce the range of shear failure area outside the anchorage tunnel, and have the best impact on the plug body's settlement control.

  • Ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey is a geophysical method that utilizes electromagnetic waves reflecting from a boundary where the electromagnetic property changes. As the frequency of the antenna is about 25 MHz ~ 1 GHz, it is effective to acquire high resolution images of underground pipe, artificial structure, underground cavity, and underground structure. In this study, we analyzed the change of signals reflected from the same underground objects according to the arrangement of transceiver antennas used in ground penetrating radar survey. The antenna used in the experiment was 200 MHz, and the survey was performed in the vertical direction across the sewer and the parallel direction along the sewer to the sewer buried under the road, respectively. A total of five antenna array methods were applied to the survey. The most used arrangement is when the transmitting and receiving antennas are all perpendicular to the survey line (PR-BD). The PR-BD arrangement is effective when the object underground is a horizontal reflector with an angle of less than 30°, such as the sewer under investigation. In this case study, it was confirmed that the transmitter and receiver antennas perpendicular to the survey line (PR-BD) are the most effective way to show the underground structure. In addition, in the case where the transmitting and receiving antennas are orthogonal to each other (XPOL), no specific reflected wave was observed in both experiments measured across or parallel to the sewer. Therefore, in the case of detecting undiscovered objects in the underground, the PR-BD array method in which the transmitting and receiving antennas are aligned in the direction perpendicular to the survey line taken as a reference and the XPOL method in which the transmitting and receiving antennas are orthogonal to each other are all used, it can be effective to apply both of the above arrangements after setting the direction to 45° and 135°.
