  • This paper presents a hybrid neural network system which used a Self-Organizing Map and Multilayer Perceptron for the problem of Malay syllables speech recognition. The novel idea in this system is the usage of a two-dimension Self-organizing feature map as a sequential mapping function which transform the phonetic similarities or acoustic vector sequences of the speech frame into trajectories in a square matrix where elements take on binary values. This property simplifies the classification task. An MLP is then used to classify the trajectories that each syllable in the vocabulary corresponds to. The system performance was evaluated for recognition of 15 Malay common syllables. The overall performance of the recognizer showed to be 91.8%.

  • Determining the layout of temporary facilities that support construction activities at a site is an important planning activity, as layout can significantly affect cost, quality of work, safety, and other aspects of the project. The construction site layout problem involves difficult combinatorial optimization. Recently, various artificial intelligence(AI)-based algorithms have been applied to solving many complex optimization problems, including neural networks(NN), genetic algorithms(GA), and swarm intelligence(SI) which relates to the collective behavior of social systems such as honey bees and birds. This study proposes a site facility layout optimization algorithm based on self-organizing maps(SOM). Computational experiments are carried out to justify the efficiency of the proposed method and compare it with particle swarm optimization(PSO). The results show that the proposed algorithm can be efficiently employed to solve the problem of site layout.

  • Self Organizing Map(SOM) is a powerful neural network model for unsupervised loaming. In many clustering works with exploratory data analysis, it has been popularly used. But it has a weakness which is the poorly theoretical base. A lot more researches for settling the problem have been published. Also, our paper proposes a method to overcome the drawback of SOM. As compared with the presented researches, our method has a different approach to solve the problem. So, a hybrid SOM is proposed in this paper. Using Monte Carlo computing, a hybrid SOM improves the performance of clustering. We verify the improved performance of a hybrid SOM according to the experimental results using UCI machine loaming repository. In addition to, the number of clusters is determined by our hybrid SOM.

  • In this paper, we present a graphics processing unit (GPU)-based matching technique for the purpose of fast feature matching between different images. The scale invariant feature transform algorithm developed by Lowe for various feature matching applications, such as stereo vision and object recognition, is computationally intensive. To address this problem, we propose a matching technique optimized for GPUs to perform computations in less time. We optimize GPUs for fast computation of keypoints to make our system quick and efficient. The proposed method uses a self-organizing map feature matching technique to perform efficient matching between the different images. The experiments are performed on various image sets to examine the performance of the system under varying conditions, such as image rotation, scaling, and blurring. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing feature matching methods, resulting in fast feature matching due to the optimization of the GPU.

  • In this paper, we introduce the advanced Self-Organizing Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Network based on optimized FPN by evolutionary algorithm and discuss its comprehensive design methodology involving mechanisms of genetic optimization, especially genetic algorithms (GAs). The proposed model gives rise to a structurally and parametrically optimized network through an optimal parameters design available within Fuzzy Polynomial Neuron(FPN) by means of GA. Through the consecutive process of such structural and parametric optimization, an optimized and flexible the proposed model is generated in a dynamic fashion. The performance of the proposed model is quantified through experimentation that exploits standard data already used in fuzzy modeling. These results reveal superiority of the proposed networks over the existing fuzzy and neural models.

  • A new RMFSOC(Reference Model Following Self-Organizing Controller) is proposed. It is composed by adding the reference model and decision rule to the Mamdani's SOC. The reference model is introduced to explicitly specify the control performance. The self-organizing level of the RMFSOC organizes the control rule which makes the process output follow the reference output generated by the reference model. In order to avoid unnecessary control rule modification, a decision rule is also introduced to determine whether the control rule modification is needed or not.

  • A robust center estimation tecnique of n-fold engineering parts is presented, which use self-organizing neural networks with generating and merging learning for training neural units. To estimate the center of the n-fold engineering parts using neural networks, the segmented boundaries of the interested part are approximated to strainght lines, and the temporal estimated centers by thecosine theorem which formed between the approximaged straight line and the reference point, , are indexed as (.sigma.-.theta.) parameteric vecstors. Then the entries of parametric vectors are fed into self-organizing nerual network. Finally, the center of the n-fold part is extracted by mean of generating and merging learning of the neurons. To accelerate the learning process, neural network uses an adaptive learning rate function to the merging process and a self-adjusting activation to generating process. Simulation results show that the centers of n-fold engineering parts are effectively estimated by proposed technique, though not knowing the error distribution of estimated centers and having less information of boundaries.

First, the basic concept of the ML algorithm in which areas of the SON of this algorithm are applied, is briefly summarized. In addition, the requirements and performance metrics for ML are summarized from the SON perspective, and the ML algorithm that has hitherto been applied to an SON achieves a performance in terms of the SON performance metrics.

  • Several studies on machine learning (ML) based self-organizing networks (SONs) have been conducted, specifically for LTE, since studies to apply ML to optimize mobile communication systems started with 2G. However, they are still in the infancy stage. Owing to the complicated KPIs and stringent user requirements of 5G, it is necessary to design the 5G SON engine with intelligence to enable users to seamlessly and unlimitedly achieve connectivity regardless of the state of the mobile communication network. Therefore, in this study, we analyze and summarize the current state of machine learning studies applied to SONs as solutions to the complicated optimization problems that are caused by the unpredictable context of mobile communication scenarios.

  • The position control of flexible joint manipulator is investigated by applying the self-organizing fuzzy logic controller (SOC) proposed by Procyk and Mamdani. The SOC is a heuristic rule-based controller and a further extension of an ordinary fuzzy controller, which has a hierachy structrue which consists of an algorithm being identical to a fuzzy controller at the lower ollp and a learning algorithm accomodating the performance evalution and rule modification function at the upper ollp. This form of control can be used in those complex systems which have been too difficult to control or which in the past have had to rely on the experience of a human operator. Even though the significant dynamic coupling of the motors and links on the flexible joint manipulator, the performance of command-following is good by applying the proposed SOC.
