  • The objective of this study was to find out the relationships between the vertical distribution of heavy metals in paddy soils and some soil characteristics. One hundred eight soil samples were collected by soil depths from 27 points of paddy fields in the vicinity of lead-zinc mining sites, and heavy metal contents and the physico-chemical characteristics of the soils were analysed. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1) Distribution of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and As) by soil depths were ranged 42-51% in 0- 15 cm, 21-29% in 15- 30 cm, 12- 17% in 30-60 cm and 11-14% in 6o-100 cm. 2) The distribution of As by soil depth showed clear difference between sandy loam and loam, while that of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn did not show any difference between these textures. 3) Distribution of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and As by different soil depths showed significantly negative correlation with soil pH value but they showed significantly positive correlation with soil organic matter content. 4) Cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc in soil had tendency to be highly correlated in each soil depth. Especially, high correlation was shown at the depth of 0- 15 cm, 30-60 cm and 60-100 cm for Pb and Zn, and 0-15 cm for Cd and Zn. Arsenic in soil was not correlated with these heavy metals.

  • Nano-sized iron colloids are formed as acid mine drainage is exposed to surface environments and is introduced into surrounding water bodies. These iron nanomaterials invoke aesthetic contamination as well as adverse effects on aqueous ecosystems. In order to control them, the characteristics of their behaviour should be understood first, but the cumulative research outputs up to now are much less than the expected. Using zero-valent iron (ZVI) and magnetite, this study aims to investigate the behaviour of iron nanomaterials according to the change in the composition and pH of background electrolyte and the concentration of natural organic matter (NOM). The size and surface zeta potential of iron nanomaterials were measured using dynamic light scattering. Characteristic behaviour, such as aggregation and dispersion was compared each other based on the DLVO (Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek) theory. Whereas iron nanomaterials showed a strong tendency of aggregation at the pH near point of zero charge (PZC) due to electrostatic attraction between particles, their dispersions became dominant at the pH which was higher or lower than PZC. In addition, the behaviour of iron nanomaterials was likely to be more significantly influenced by cations than anions in the electrolyte solutions. Particularly, it was observed that divalent cation influenced more effectively than monovalent cation in electrostatic attraction and repulsion between particles. It was also confirmed that the NOM enhanced the dispersion nanomaterials with increasing the negative charge of nanomaterials by coating on their surface. Under identical conditions, ZVI aggregated more easily than magnetite, and which would be attributed to the lower stability and larger reactivity of ZVI.

  • Finding alternative feeds, such as sesame hulls and Prosopis juliflora species can attenuate difficulties of feed shortage and reduce the cost of animal feed in arid and semi-arid countries. Thirty-two Black male kids with similar initial weights (BW = $16.7{\pm}0.80\;kg$) and $120{\pm}5\;d$ of age, were used to evaluate the effect of replacing barley grains and soybean meal with Prosopis juliflora pods (PJP) and sesame hulls (SH) on growth performance, digestibility and carcass and meat characteristics. Kids were equally divided into four dietary treatment groups for an 84-d fattening period. Treatment diets had similar crude protein (CP) and metabolizable energy (ME). The treatment groups were: (T1) no PJP nor SH, (T2) 10% PJP and 20% SH, (T3) 15% PJP and 15% SH, and (T4) 20% PJP and 10% SH. A tendency was detected (p<0.08) for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), organic matter (OM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intakes that were greater for T2 than T3 and T4 while T1 was not different from all other treatment groups. Ether extract (EE) intake was the greatest (p<0.05) for T2 and the lowest for T1. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) intake was greater (p<0.05) for T2 than T1 while T3 and T4 were intermediate. Final live weight, average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were comparable among different treatment groups. Digestibility of DM, OM, CP, NDF and ADF were similar among all treatment groups, however, EE digestibility was the lowest (p<0.05) for T1 when compared to other treatments. In addition, nitrogen intake, nitrogen in urine and retained and retention percentages were similar among all treatment groups. However, N loss in feces was higher (p<0.05) for T2 than T3 and T4 while T1 was intermediate. No differences were observed among treatment groups with respect to fasting live weight, hot and cold carcass weights, dressing-out percentages, mesenteric fat, visceral organs, carcass cuts percentages and carcass linear dimensions. No differences were also observed for dissected loin, leg, rack and shoulder tissues except in the total bone % for loin cuts and in the meat to bone ratio for rack cuts. T3 has the greatest total bone % and the lowest meat to bone ratio when compared to all other treatment groups. No differences were observed between treatment groups in all quality characteristics of the longissimus muscle. The present study demonstrates the potential of using PJP and SH for growing kids without adverse effects on growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality.

  • Previous studies showed that shell meal fertilizer from the oyster farming industry could be a potential inorganic soil amendment to increase Chinese cabbage productivity and to restore the soil nutrient balance in upland soil (Lee et al., 2004). Herein, shell meal fertilizer was applied at rates of 0, 4, 8, 12, and $16Mg\;ha^{-1}$ to upland soil (Pyeontaeg series, Fine silty, Typic Endoaquepts) for Chinese cabbage cultivation. We found available phosphate increased significantly with shell meal fertilizer application, due to high content of phosphate ($1.5g\;P_2O_5\;kg^{-1}$) in the applied shell meal fertilizer. In addition, high pH of shell meal fertilizer contributed to increase available phosphate content by neutralization of acidic soil. Total and residual P contents increased significantly with increasing shell meal fertilizer application, but we could not find any tendency in organic and inorganic P fraction. Of extractable P fraction, water-soluble phosphorus (W-P) and calcium-bound P (Ca-P) contents increased significantly with increasing application level. By contrast, aluminum and iron-bound P (Al-P and Fe-P) decreased slightly with shell meal application. The present experiment indicated that shell meal fertilizer had a positive benefit on increasing available phosphate content in arable soil. And so the increased available phosphate by shell meal fertilizer may decrease phosphate application level and then reduce phosphorus loss in arable soil.

  • This experiment was conducted to obtain basic information on the improved methods of soil physico-chemical properties and sweet potato yield cultivated on a newly-reclaimed land, a Songjeong loam soil. The crop was cultivated under the six different treatments for 4years since 1985 in the field conditions. Annual changes of soil properties and sweet potato yield were investigated and analyzed. Soil bulk density increased from the second year, and also soil hardness of topsoil increased, but that of subsoil had not tendency. Average yield of sweet potato for 4years in the integrated improvement plot was 32.68ton/ha, which is increased by 59% in comparison to that of the control plot. Crop yield was in order of integrated improvement>phosphate>subsoiling>lime>compost>control plots. The soil properties of the topsoil which showed high correlation coefficient to sweet potato yield were bulk density, hardness and cation exchange capacity(CEC), and those of the subsoil were bulk density, soil moisture and CEC. Ratios of changes of soil properties except organic matter content showed high significancy to sweet potato yield. Soil physico-chemical properties of the 4th year without soil conditioners application were worse than those of 3rd year.

  • Experiment was conducted to get the information about physico-chemical properties of flue-cured tobacco on the degree of maturity cultivated in paddy-upland rotated field, and compared to upland ones. For the samples of this experiment, 3~4 leaves at each stalk position were harvested from the bottom of plants. Physico-chemical properties of cured leaves were determined from the samples collected at weekly intervals, and of obtained from 4 stalk positions. For the degree of maturity, harvested leaves were separated with visual characters into four classes such as immature, mature, ripe, and mellow. Regardless of stalk position, the order of shrinkage rate with length and width of leaves was mellow> immature> ripe> mature, and ripe leaves from paddy field showed higher shrinkage rate than those of upland. Nicotine and total nitrogen contents were decreased with the degree of maturity while reducing sugar content were showed a reverse tendency. Ripe leaves from paddy field had lower reducing sugar contents, comparing with upland tobacco. Filling capacity of cured leaves from paddy field was decreased with degree of maturity, but there was no difference between upland and paddy tobacco. Shatter index was increased in the oeder of immature > mellow > mature > ripe. Chemical components of cigarette smoke from paddy field tobacco were little higher in $CO_2$ total particulate matter and tar contents, while combustibility was little lower than that of upland tobacco. It was also evaluated that paddy field tobacco was unfavorable for the non-volatile organic and higher fatty acids contents comparing with upland tobacco.

  • Treatability tests were conducted to study the feasibility of EMMC process as a recycling-water treatment system in high density seawater aquaculture farm. To study the effect of organic and ammonia nitrogen loading rate on system performance, hydraulic retention time was reduced gradually from 12hr to 10min. The conclusions are can be summarized as follows. When the system HRT was reduced from 12hr to 2hr gradually, there was little noticeable change(reduction) in ammonia nitrogen removal efficiencies. However, removal efficiencies were decreased dramatically when the system was operated under the HRT of less than 2hr. In case of organics(COD), there was no dramatic change in removal efficiencies depending on HRT reduction. COD removal efficiencies were maintained successfully higher than 9% when the system was operated at tile HRT of 10 min. System performances depending on media packing ratio in the reactors were also evaluated. There were little differences in each reactor performances depending on media packing ratio in reactor when the reactors were operated under the HRT of longer than 1hr. However, differences in reactor performances were considerably evident when the reactors were operated under the HRT of shorter than 1hr. When comparing reactor performance among 25%, 50%,7 5% packed reactor, it can be judged that media packing ratio more than 50% plays no significant role in increasing reactor performance. For this reason, packing the media less than 50% is more reasonable way in view of economic. Such a tendency shown in COD removal efficiencies well agreed with the variation of ammonia-nitrogen removal efficiencies according to the media packing ratio in reactors at each HRT. Difference in effluent ammonia-nitrogen concentration between 50% media packing reactor and 75% media packing reactor was negligible. When comparing with the results of 25% packing reactor, difference was not so great.

  • This work was performed to evaluate the effect of membrane material and structure on fouling in a submerged membrane bioreactor(MBR). Three types of microfiltration membranes with the same pore size of 0.1 $\mu$m but different materials, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polycarbonate(PCTE) and polyester(PETE), were used. While PETE membrane exhibited the most rapid flux decline throughout the operation, PCTE and PTFE had a similar tendency with regard to permeability. Difference in permeability between PETE and the other membranes gradually decreased with time, which was probably due to chemical cleaning. The higher TOC rejection of PETE membrane could be attributable to its faster fouling, resulting from a larger amount of foulants to get attached to the membrane in a shorter time. DOC fractionation using a DAX-8 resin showed that the composition of each fraction between the supernatant and permeates did not change significantly with operation time, indicating that membrane hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity was not a dominant factor affecting to MBR fouling in this study. Compared to other membranes, the fouling of PETE membrane was more influenced by pore clogging (irreversible fouling), which would probably contribute to a higher organic rejection of the PETE membrane.

  • The black soldier fly larvae are able to decompose various organic wastes such as livestock manures and food wastes. We tested whether the quality of the insect derived compost, i.e. larval feces, was comparable to that of a commercial fertilizer. Chemical analysis of Hermetia. illucens compost was suitable as a fertilizer. When the kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was raised on the culture soil treated with the H. illucens compost, the growth of leaf area, total dry weight and leaf dry weight increased significantly. The H. illucens compost is thought to act as an increasing factor of RGR (relative growth rate) from the beginning of growth and also had a great effect on the relative growth rate throughout the late stage of growth. There is high statistical significance between NAR (net assimilation rate) and RGR (relative growth rate), but no significance between RGR and LAR (leaf assimilation rate) of the treatments. In addition, the treatment of H. illucens compost promoted the thickness of leaves from the beginning of growth and the tendency of thickening leaves from the beginning of growth and the effect continued throughout the late period of growth. When mixed with 50% of H. illucens compost rather than 25%, it showed the greater effect on the plant growth.

  • The efforts were made to develop persimmon leaf beverages on the basis of the results of sensory evaluation. The result of sensory evaluation for the development of persimmon leaf beverages showed that when the concentration of extracts was 10%, the aroma and flavor of persimmon leaves was best. The optimum concentration of sugar was 4.5% and apple juice was 15%. The change of pH had the tendency to keep stable range(3.82-3.71) during the period of 30 days and free-sugar had little change according to the temperature and time of preservation. The preservation of the change of ascorbic acid revealed that the range of decrease in the case of preservation at $4^{\circ}C$ was a bit narrower than in the case of preservation at $25^{\circ}C$. Nonvolatile organic acids were four kinds of acids, oxalic acid, levulinic acid, malic acid, and citric acid, among which levulinic acid was on the increase for the first 10 days during the preservation period and then on the decrease regardless of the temperature of preservation. The browning of beverages was on the slight increase.
