  • Achieving very low phosphorus levels in treated wastewater will require the installation of additional treatment. Phosphorus removal experiments by chemical coagulation were carried out for the effluent of wastewater treatment plant in this study. TP (total phosphorus) or phosphate were highly related to the addition of PAC (poly aluminium chloride) which is one of the inorganic coagulants. But, organic polymer did not significantly affect the phosphorus removal efficiency. Polymer affected the flocculation of particle especially particle matter less than 10 micrometer so, the number of micro particles was decreased by polymer dose. Chlorination would not affect on chemical coagulation process and TP and turbidity could be effectively removed by the co-addition of PAC and polymer.

  • The present study was conducted in three fields at Namhae to examine the removal efficiency of organic free, heavy metal immobilized sediment on Cochlodinium polykrikoidesand and on sea water quality. The present study results concluded that removal efficiency was depends on the initial number of red tide cells. There was no drastic change in the sea water quality after sediment spray. For the comparison of effectiveness of betonite, zeolite and lime were mixed with sediment did not show any marked difference in removal. Finally, the present study evaluated 50g/$m^{2}$ sediment is sufficient to remove 100% cells density, even though various environmental factors are interfering the mechanism.

  • A Korean Type Biofilter system combined with a conventional anoxic tank(septic tank) process was investigated in regard to its feasibility for removing organic as well as nutrients from the rural wastewater in Korea. At recirculation, the removal rate in BOD and SS increased slightly as much as 93 and 95% compared with non-recirculation system. On the other hand, removal rates of the total nitrogen(T-N) and total phosphorous(T-P) in recirculation system increased significantly as much as 62 and 57%, respectively compared with non-recirculation system. The recirculation system provides sufficient treatment to improve the removal rate in T-N and T-P.

  • Biofiltration is a biological process which is considered to be one of the more successful examples of biotechnological applications to environmental engineering, and is most commonly used in the removal of odoriferous compounds. In this study, we have attempted to assess the efficiency with which both single and complex odoriferous compounds could be removed, using one- or two-stage biofiltration systems. The complex gas removal scheme was applied with a 200 ppm inlet concentration of ethanol, 70 ppm of acetaldehyde, and 70 ppm of toluene with EBCT for 45 seconds in a one- or two-stage biofiltration system. The removal yield of toluene was determined to be lower than that of the other gases in the one-stage biofilter. Otherwise, the complex gases were sufficiently eliminated by the two-stage biofiltration system.

  • In this study, sulfate reduction reaction was used to increase the decomposition of organics, which is the most critical factor for the stabilization of a landfill site. Composite of sewage sludge, papers, and incineration ashes was used in the column. The experimental results indicated that out of 10 reactors, the reactors 3, 4, 8. and 9 showed higher organics (i.e., TOC) removal rate than that in the absence of sulfate. The organics removal rates (K) in R3 and R9 were 8.65e$\^$-4/d and 3.82e$\^$-4//d, respectively. The times to reach 10% of initial concentrations in R3 and R9 was 7.3 and 16.5 years, respectively, showing faster organics decomposition rates in these reactors.

  • The objective of this study is to review the basic theories related substrate removal in wastewater flow variations using submerged biofilm reactor. An aerated biofilm reactor is that in which influent organic substrates are aerobically oxidized by the microorganisms of biofilm grown on the surface of submerged media. No sludge is returned, and oxygen is supplied by diffusers. Three types of aerated biofilm reactor are one stage-central aeration, one stageup flow aeration and two stage-side aeration. The orders of substrate removal capacity in wastewater flow variations showed two stage-side aeration, one stage-upflow aeration and one stage-central aeration. The phenonmenon of nonclosing volid in upflow aeration type was superior to these in central-side aeration type. Attached biofilm masses in case of upflow, side and central aeration reactor were 1.0mg/cm$^2$, 4.1 mg/cm$^2$ and 0.93 mg/cm$^2$, respectively. Yield coefficient for biofilm was 0.31 to 0.48. Especially, removal efficiency can be increased remarkably according to the number of biofilm reactor and the packed condition of media.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are representative hydrophobic organic carbons (HOCs). Surfactant-enhanced electrokinetic (EK) remediation is an innovative in-situ technology that can effectively remove HOCs from low-permeability soils. In this study, the electrokinetic remediation using Tergitol 15-S-12, a nonionic surfactant, was conducted for the removal of phenanthrene from kaolinite. Tergitol 15-S-12 was used at concentrations of 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 7.5 g/L to enhance the solubility of phenanthrene. When the surfactant solution was applied to EK system, high electrical potential gradient was maintained and the amount of electroosmotic flow decreased. Removal efficiency of phenanthrene was proportional to the concentration of Tergitol 15-S-12 because the solubility and mobility of phenanthrene was enhanced by surfactant micelle. Therefore, the suitable concentration of nonionic surfactant Tergitol 15-S-12 is expected to improve the removal efficiency of PAHs in EK remediation.

  • Adsorption characteristics of boron on activated carbon was investigated in order to evaluate the use of activated carbon for the removal of boron in desalination processes using SWRO. Boron was removed ranging from 54~60% when the concentration of activated carbon was 1,000 mg/L in 6 hours under the initial boron concentration of 5 mg/L. The removal of boron increased by 20~22% with the increase of pH from 5 to 9. Organic matter had adverse effect on the adsorption of boron on activated carbon. Boron removal decreased by 10-12% when EDTA was added at 1 mg/L under 5 mg/L of boron and 200mg/L of activated carbon. In this results, activated carbon would be a good candidate for a pretreatment of desalination processes by SWRO from the view of mitigating the feed boron concentration to RO and meeting the effluent boron concentration without post-treatment after RO.

  • Ozone alone and catalytic ozone processes were introduced for treatment of humic acid, which is representative refractory organic compound. The treatment efficiencies of humic acid in each process were analyzed in pH variation, DOC removal, and $UV_{254}$ decrease. Mn loaded GAC catalyst was prepared by loading potassium permanganate onto the granular activated carbon surface. BCM-GAC and BCM-Silica gel catalyst were prepared by BCM. $UV_{254}$ decrease in all processes was comparatively high with efficiency over 87%. DOC removal in ozone/GAC process was the highest with 78%, and removal rates for other processes followed the order ozone/BCM-GAC(62%) > ozone/BCM-silica gel(45%) > ozone/silica gel(43%) > ozone/Mn Loaded GAC(42%) > ozone alone(37%).

  • This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of livestock wastewater excepting pig feces and the variation tendency of water quality and the removal efficiency of polluting materials by establishing the sequencing batch reactor in the field. The results were as follows, 1. The characteristics of livestock wastewater as follows: BOD: 619.80, COD$_{cr}$: 782.70, NH$_{3}$-N: 194.20, TKN: 232.81, PO$_{4}$-P: 24.10, T-P: 215.14 (mg/l) 2. During the reaction, negative correlation existed between pH and dissolved oxygen concentration. 3. The removal efficiency of the organic material by the index of BOD and COD was about 90%. 4. Nitrogen removal efficiency was 65.6% by total Kjeldahl nitrogen index, and phosphorous removal efficiency was about 47% by PO$_{4}$-P concentration.
