This study was initiated to investigate the applicability of the dredged soil from agricultural reservoirs on the crop cultivation. Four reservoirs were selected for this experiment, and properties of the dredged soils were analyzed physically and chemically. Soil textures were sandy loam(SL), silty loam(SiL), gravelly loam(GL), graveHy silty loam(GSiL), respectively. General chemical components, organic matter contents, main cations, heavy metals, etc. showed no adverse effects on crop growth. Tomato, cucumber, radish, Chinese cabbage were cultivated during 8 months period, in the soil treated with fertilizer and compost(Tmt.1), fertilizer(Tmt.2), compost(Tmt.3) and none (Tmt.4). Data for plant height, root zone depth and crop yield were collected and analyzed, and the yield for most crops showed increase as Tmt.1 >Tmt.2>Tmt.3>Tmt.4 by fertilizing methods, and as GL>GSiL>SL>SiL by soil textures. From the results, the crop cultivation using dredged soil was considered to be effective, due to its soil texture, organic matter content and fertilization.
The layered perovskite oxide, KSr2Nb3O10, was synthesized. The interlayer potassium cations were readily exchanged by protons in hydrochloric acid solution to give the protonation compound, HSr2Nb3O10·0.5H2O. The intercalation compounds, [NH3(CH2)nNH3]xSr2Nb3O10, were also obtained by acid-base reactions between the protonation compound and organic bases, 1,n-alkyldiamines. The interlayer distances in the intercalation compounds were linearly increased with the increase of the number of carbon (Δc/Δn=1.05 Å) in 1,n-alkyldiamines. The intercalated alkyldiammonium ions formed a paraffin-like monolayer with average tilting angle (θ) of ca. 56°. The intercalation reactions occurred stoichiometrically. The thermal decomposition process of the intercalation compounds showed distinct three steps due to the desorption of hydrated water, the decomposition of organic moiety, and the decomposition of Sr-related compounds.
This study was performed to investigate the separation of cesium cations by using an electrochemical ion exchanger of nickel hexacyanoferrate($KNiFe(CN)_6$) film electrode. Potential, current, and charge passing through the cyclic voltammograms were measured in singular and binary solutions of 1.0M $NaNO_3$ and 1.0M $CsNO_3$. Before and after each experiment, the structural morphology and atomic composition of $KNiFe(CN)_6$ were analyzed by SEM and EDS, respectively. The ion selectivity of $KNiFe(CN)_6$ was also observed by the voltammograms and atomic compositions measured in the solution alternated between sodium and cesium. As the result of this study, it was found that the electrically switched $KNiFe(CN)_6$ ion exchanger had the significant advantage of 40 times or longer durability than conventional organic or inorganic ion exchanger. It was also shown that the $KNiFe(CN)_6$ ion exchanger had high selectivity for cesium over sodium.
In nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities the removal of cobalt from radioactive liquid waste is needed to reduce the radioactivity concentration in effluents. In liquid wastes containing strong organic complexing agents such as EDTA cobalt removal can be problematic due to the high stability of the Co-EDTA complex. In this study, the removal of cobalt from NaNO3 solutions using antimony oxide (Sb2O3) synthesized from potassium hexahydroxoantimonate was investigated in the absence and presence of EDTA. The uptake studies on the ion exchange material were conducted both in the dark (absence of UV-light) and under UV-C irradiation. Ca2+ or Ni2+ were included in the experiments as competing cations to test the selectivity of the ion exchanger. Results show that UV-C irradiation noticeably enhances the cobalt sorption efficiency on the antimony oxide. It was shown that nickel decreased the sorption of cobalt to a higher extent than calcium. Finally, the sorption data collected for Co2+ on antimony oxide was modeled using six different isotherm models. The Sips model was found to be the most suitable model to describe the sorption process. The Dubinin-Radushkevich model was further used to calculate the adsorption energy, which was found to be 6.2 kJ mol-1.
Two piperazine-templated metal sulfate complexes, $(C_4N_2H_{12})[Ni(H_2O)_6](SO_4)_2$, I and ($C_4N_2H_{12}$) $[Co(H_2O)_6](SO_4)_2$, II, have been synthesized by hydro/solvothermal reactions and their crystal structures analyzed by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Complex I crystallizes in the monoclinic system, $P2_1/n$ space group, a=12.920(3), b=10.616(2), $c=13.303(2){\AA}$, ${\beta}=114.09(1)^{\circ}$, Z=4, $R_1=0.030$ for 3683 reflections; II: monoclinic $P2_1/n$, a=12.906(3), b=10.711(2), $c=13.303(2){\AA}$, ${\beta}=114.10(2)^{\circ}$, Z=4, $R_1=0.032$ for 4010 reflections. The crystal structures of the piperazine-templated metal(II) sulfates demonstrate zero-dimensional compound constituted by diprotonated piperazine cations, metal(II) cations and sulfate anions. The structures of complex I and II are substantially isostructural to that of the previously reported our piperazine-templated copper(II) sulfate complex $(C_4N_2H_{12})[Cu(H_2O)_6](SO_4)_2$. The central metal(II) atoms are coordinated by six water molecules in the octahedral geometry. The crystal structures are stabilized by three-dimensional networks of the $O_{water}-H{\cdots}O_{sulfate}$ and $N_{pip}-H{\cdots}O_{sulfate}$ hydrogen bonds between the water molecules and sulfate anions and protonated piperazine cations. Based on the results of thermal analysis, the thermal decomposition reactions of the complex I was analyzed to have three distinctive stages whereas the complex II proceed through several stages.
In recent years, organic ginseng cultivation has increased because customers prefer organic ginseng products due to the morphological quality as well as the safety such as the residuals of chemically-synthesized pesticides. Therefore, some of paddy and upland fields were converted into organic ginseng fields. Soil chemical properties, soil microflora, and soil-inhabiting animals were investigated in paddy-converted and upland organic ginseng fields in Sangju city, Korea. There was few difference in the soil chemical properties, and the soil nutrient concentrations, such as nitrate-N, Av. $P_2O_5$ between the two field types, and exchangeable cations such as K and Ca were within the ranges which are recommended by the standard ginseng-farming manual. Changes in microflora were also assessed by analyzing phospholipid fatty acid composition. Overall, indicators of microbial groups were greater in the upland field than in the paddy-converted soil, but they were not significantly different. In addition, there was no significant change in the abundance of nematodes, collembolans, and mites between the two field types probably because of the high variation within the field types. In this study, it was suggested that soil chemical and biological properties for organic ginseng cultivation were greatly influenced by the variation of topography and soil management practices rather than field types. Further study may be needed to investigate the influence of these factors on soil chemical and biological properties in organic ginseng soils.
Soils of four combinations, sand with high content of organic matter(SL), sand with low content of OM(SS), siltyl loam with high content of OM(LL) and silty loam with low content OM (LS), were filled on column and then percolated with simulated sulfuric acid rain with pH 5.6, 4.0, 3.5, 3.0 and 2.5. From soil leachates, pH and concentrations of basic cations and Al were determined. Cation concentrations in the leachates increased as pH of the rain decreased. The orders of buffering capacity of soil, leachability of cation from soil, leaching sensitivity of ion andbase saturation sensitivity of soil to acidity of the rain water were SS$\leq$K <$\leq$LL

Recently electrokinetic process is known to be a promising remediation technology for the contaminated soils with heavy metals, radionuclides, organic matters, and so on. The contaminants in electrokinetic technology are removed mainly by three mechanisms; electroosmosis, electromigration, and electrophoresis. When direct current is introduced between two electrodes planted in soil, a large amount of hydrogen ions is formed and moves from anode to cathode with the other cations contained in electrolyte. The water flow caused by tile movement of cations is called as electroosmosis. Especially for non-ionic pollutants, the electroosmotic flow(EOF) is the most important removal mechanism among them and transports contaminants from anode to cathode along the water flow. In this study, characteristics of electroosmotic flow was investigated according to the resistance state of soil. The decrease, maintenance, and increase of soil resistance could be obtained by controlling ions in soil. When the resistance of soil was decreasing or maintained, the EOF is proportional to electric current and voltage, respectively and when the resistance was increasing, the EOF is proportional to only electric current not voltage.
Soil nutrient status in an organic apple farm was evaluated in relation to a conventional farm to better understand the effects of organic farming system on soil fertility. Soil organic matter, total and mineral N, available P, exchangeable cations, and available micronutrients were monitored at depth of 5-20 cm from May to October in 2006. Average soil organic matter content was 63.3 and $31.0g\;kg^{-1}$ in organic and conventional farm, respectively. Total N content was 3.3 and $1.7g\;kg^{-1}$ in average for organic and conventional farm, respectively. Ammonium and nitrate N in organic farming were maintained at relatively stable levels, but in the conventional farm the levels were very high in early season due to the chemical fertilizer application. In the organic apple farm, available P content in May was lower than that found in the conventional farm, but during the growing season available P content was continuously increased and in August the content was more than $1000mg\;P_2O_5\;kg^{-1}$. The organic farm maintained relatively greater exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg levels than the conventional farm. Available Cu, Fe, and Mn contents in the conventional farm were relatively greater than those found in the organic farm. However, available Zn extracted in 0.1 M HCl was much greater in the organic farm. Nutrient levels above crop needs were observed in both conventional and organic apple farm suggesting a more appropriate management of soil nutrients in organic farming to secure its fundamental functions for the sustainable agriculture.
A two year study was conducted on the effects of composted pig manure applications on organically managed intermediate-day onion ($Allium$$cepa$ L.) with mid-season production. The manure application rates were 0, 4.0, 6.0, and 8.0 $ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$, and accompanied by organic fertilizer with 240 $kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ nitrogen for all treatments. There was a positive linear effect on the marketable bulb yield with increasing applications of pig manure. However, pig manure rates of 6.0 or 8.0 $ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ did not affect the marketable yields or bulb weights at harvest. There was no significant difference between pig manure application rates and mineral concentration or nutrient uptake in onion bulbs. Soil pH and electric conductivity (EC) were lower at harvest compared to preplant soil, while exchangeable potassium and calcium contents increased at harvest. However, there were no significant effects on soil pH, EC, and organic matter or exchangeable cations caused by different pig manure application rates. Mineralized $NO_3$-N content was not affected by pig manure application rates except at transplanting and 129 day after transplanting. Based on the results of this study, when organic fertilizer is applied at a rate of 240 $kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ N, 6.0 $ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ composted pig manure should be adequate for producing onions using an organic production system.
