This study was performed to investigate components of organic solvents and present statues of environmental measurements with official records of working environmental measurements of 4,181 workplaces in 3,280 workshops used airborne organic solvents. 1. The mean working hour of 4,181 workplace producing airborne organic solvents in 3,280 workshops was 437±28.7min, but the mean sampling time for measurement of airborne organic solvents was identified to be 254±28.8min. In 73.0% of 4,181 samples the sampling frequencys were Full-period, single sample measurement. 2. The total 54 components of organic solvents were measured in total airborne samples of 4,181 workplace in 3,280 workshops in both of first and second half-year. These were divided into 38 components, Group 1 substances (5 components), Group 2 substances (31 components) and Group 3 substances (2 components), regulated by the Industrial Safety and Health Law, and other 16 components without legal duty of working environment measurement. The most common component in each half-year was Toluene (84.8%, 88.2%), which was followed by Xylene (464.4%, 51.7%), Methyl ethyl ketone (31.1%, 34.4%), n-Hexane (22.7%, 27.8%) and Benzene (20.4%, 21.5%) in frequency. Of legal duty free components, Ethyl benzen, Trimethyl benzene and Pentane were frequently detected. In conclusion, these results show that the present legal classification system of organic solvents needs to revise. Also these results suggest that it must be necessary to analyze the component of airborne organic solvents mixture and to evaluate their effects on workers' health for the effective management of working environment in workshops treating with organic solvents.

Polyester filaments were dyed with disperse dye in dyebath containing water and water miscible organic solvents . acetone, 1,4-dioxane, DMF. In case of Acetone and 1,4-dioxane, the equilibrium dyeuptake was maximun at the volume fraction 0.05. The equilibrium dye uptakes were decreased as volun~e fraction of organic solvents were increased. When the volume fractions of water miscible organic solvents were varied, dye uptake was increased constantly with dyeing time. In dyebath containing water and water miscible organicsolvent, the dyeuptake was increased quickly during initial 40∼ 60 min. and slowly increased there after. The slope of Ct/Coo to t was greater in dyebath containing water and water miscible organic solvents than dyebath containing water. The differences of the slope with volulne fractions of water miscible organic solvent were not shown big.

ln order to acquire the fundamental data for the organic solvents in bond and to contribute the health improvement of workers in deprtment of organic solvents in shoes manufacturing industries. The authors surveyed the contents of organic solvent in adhesive and determined the amount of volatilization of organic solvent by time and temperature with gaschromatography from March to September 1990. The results were as follows; 1) The kinds for organic solvents in bond were 9 that was Toluene, C-Hexane, N-Hexane, C-Hexanon, Aceton, Methyl Ethyl Keton, Dimethyl Formamide, Etyly Acetate. 2) Toluene and Methyl Ethyl Keton among the organic solvents in adhesive were over 80.18%. 3) The amount of volatilization of Methyl Cyclohexanone and Aceton by time and temperature were the most level than other compounds.
In anhydrous organic solvents, the complexes formed between AOT (dodecylbenzene sulfuric acid sodium salt) and hemoproteins, such as hemoglobin, myoglobin, or cytochrome c, displayed remarkably higher activity than the hemoprotein powders to oxidize dibenzothiophene, a model compound of organic sulfurs contained in fossil fuels. In slightly hydrophobic organic solvents, such as ethyl acetate and butyl acetate, dibenzothiophene was completely oxidized catalytically by the cytochrome c-AOT complex with cumene hydroperoxide (${\alpha},{\alpha}-dimethylbenzyl$ hydroperoxide) as an oxidant. In highly hydrophobic organic solvents, such as decane and hexadecane, however, the activity of the cytochrome c-AOT complex decreased, presumably due to the aggregation of the hemoprotein-AOT complex in these solvents.
The behaviour of alginate immobilized and soluble watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris) urease in water miscible organic solvents like, acetonitrile, dimethylformamide (DMF), ethanol, methanol, and propanol is described. The organic solvents exhibited a concentration dependent inhibitory effect on both the immobilized and the soluble urease in the presence of urea. Pretreatment of soluble enzyme preparations with organic solvents in the absence of substrate for 10 min at $30^{\circ}C$ led to rapid loss in the activity, while similar pretreatment of immobilized urease with 50% (v/v) of ethanol, propanol, and acetonitrile was ineffective. Time-dependent inactivation of immobilized urease, both in the presence and in the absence of urea, revealed stability for longer duration of time even at very high concentration of organic solvents. The soluble enzyme, on the other hand, was rapidly inactivated even at fairly lower concentrations. The results suggest that the immobilization of watermelon urease in calcium alginate make it suitable for its application in organic media. The observations are discussed.
Permeabilization is known to overcome cell membrane barriers of whole cell biocatalysts. The use of organic solvents is advantageous in terms of cost, simplicity, and efficiency. In this study, Ochrobactrum anthropi SY509 was permeabilized with various organic solvents. Treatment with organic solvents resulted in lower permeability barriers due to falling out lipids of the cell membrane. Therefore, permeabilized cells showed higher enzyme activity with no cell viability. Among various organic solvents, 0.5% (v/v) chloroform was selected as the most efficient permeabilizing reagent. Changes in the cell membrane structure were observe d and the residual amounts of phospholipids of the cell membrane were measured to investigate the mechanism of the improved permeability.
Many bacteria that are capable to tolerate and degrade organic solvents have been isolated from seawater. However, their roles in the biodegradation of organic solvents in the marine environment have remained unknown. Aeromonas hydrophila IB$B_{ct4}$, isolated from Constanta seawater, was able to tolerate and degrade different organic solvents. Toluene, styrene, xylene isomers, ethylbenzene, with the logarithm of the partition coefficient in octanol-water mixture (log $P_{ow}$) between 2.64 and 3.17, were more toxic for bacterial cells, compared with propylbenzene, n-hexane, n-heptane, with log $P_{ow}$ between 3.69 and 4.39. There were revealed cellular and molecular modifications induced by organic solvents to Aeromonas hydrophila IB$B_{ct4}$. The study of cellular and molecular modifications induced by different organic solvents showed a complex response of bacterial cells to the presence of organic solvents in the culture media.
The regulation of Material safety data sheets(MSDS) was required for the chemicals in use in the workplace from July 1976. Under the provisions of the workplace hazardous materials information system, employers in Korea must be provided with accurate and comprehensive MSDS. To examine the reliability of MSDS for organic solvents, 63 organic solvents and MSDS were collected from the workplace of 39 companies located in Kyonggi province. Manufacture\`s MSDS were compared with the actual composition of the collected samples, and further examined the reliability by checking whether the chemicals analyzed were included in the MSDS correctly. 38 solvents were able to analyze their composition by gas chromatography-mass selective detector(GC-MSD). Among them, 28 solvents were incorrect in their composition and contents. In some case, health hazardous or carcinogenic chemicals which were not included in the MSDS were detected from samples. As a result of evaluating whether the MSDS correspond to the regulation required by Industrial Safety and Health Act (ISHA), the information in the MSDS including hazard classification, occupational exposure level, toxicity, regulatory information were incorrectly provided, and some MSDS did not disclose carcinogenic in their MSDS, and some MSDS were not written in the standard format. From this survey, continuous monitoring and promoting correct MSDS, and analyzing the components of the solvents were required to endure the reliability of MSDS for organic solvents.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of organic slovents and noise on hearing loss. We selected organic solvents exposed group of 32 cases, noise exposed group of 31 cases, both noise and solvent exposed group of 31 cases, and control group of 53 cases and studied the relation between exposure level of noise and organic solvents and degree of hearing loss. The results were as follows. The subjects under investigation were exposed to noise and organic solvents under threshold limit values and the amount of urinary hippuric acid excretion were also under biological exposure indices. In case of noise, both noise and organic solvents exposed group and noise exposed group were more exposed than organic solvents exposed group(p<0.05). When urinary hippuric acid excretion were concerned, both noise iud organic solvents exposed group and organic solvents exposed group showed higher values than noise exposed group(p<0.05). In comparison of mean auditory threshold values by frequency, on the air conduction test, both noise and organic solvents exposed group showed significantly higher hearing loss than noise exposed group in 500Hz of right ear, 500 and 2000Hz of left ear(p<0.05). Forty-three cases among 147 subjects were regarded as hearing loss group and average age(42.6years) of hearing loss group was higher than normal groups average age of 38.0 years. Urinary hippuric acid excretions of hearing loss group were significantly higher than normal group(p<0.05). Thirty-eight percent(12cases) of noise exposed group, 40.6 $\%$(13cases) of organic solvents exposed group, 51.6 $\%$(16cases) of both noise and organic solvents exposed group, and 3.8 $\%$(2cases) of unexposed group were regarded as hearing losers. Exposed groups showed higher incidence of hearing loss than unexposed group but there were no significant differences among the exposed groups. The variables showing significant correlation with hearing loss were age and the amount of hippuric acid in urinary excretion. When age were adjusted for the purpose of seeing the effects of hearing losses due to organic solvent, urinary excretion of hippuric acids was the only variable with significant correlation with hearing loss (p<0.05). When odds ratio to hearing loss between control and exposed groups was considered, noise exposed group showed 6.1 times (95 $\%$ CI: 3.3-8.7), organic solvents exposed group showed 7.4 times (95 $\%$ CI: 3.5-14.6) and both noise and organic solvents exposed group showed 17.2 times(95% CI: 5.6-31.8) higher values than unexposed group(p<0.01). Above results suggest that health screening test of hearing loss is also needed in organic solvents exposed workers.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the present state of worker's physical. behavioral effects and recognition about the hazard factors in their workplace. The subject consisted of 208 workers in the organic solvents related industry. The workers were surveyed by means of a Questionnaire during the period of March 24 to May 26. 1994. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. t-test. AVOVA using the SAS program. The result of the study are follows: 1. The more than half of workers in the organic solvents related industry have experienced 'eye disturbance', 'headache', 'sputum formation' and 'dizziness'. 2. $83.4\%$ of workers have recognized the name of organic solvents in using of their workplace. $62.4\%$ of workers have recognized the harmfulness of organic solvents. $41.7\%$ of workers have not recognized the difference of harmfulness of various organic solvents. 3. $27.8\%$ of workers have called on clinic when have experienced physical symptoms. About $90\%$ of workers have called on hospitals and drugstores when have experienced physical symptoms.
