This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of several organic compost on the growth and root yield of Scutellaria baicalensis G. with organic cultivation from 2008 to 2009. Four organic compost were used ; Rice bran compost (RC : 1.1-3.6-1.4), Wheat bran compost (WC: 1.1-3.4-1.4), Hangawi compost (HC : 3.7-4.0-1.0), Cheonnyeonjigi compost (CC : 12.4-3.4-5.4) and Fermented chicken droppings compost (FC : 2.9-6.1-3.2). Organic matter, available phosphate and $K_2O$ of soil increased in all plots with the addition of organic compost, specifically in HC, CC and FC application. Treatment of HC, CC and FC application increased emergence rate and improved the growth characters of shoot, root parts of plants compared to those of RC application. Subterranean part yields by different organic compost was high 149~156 kg per 10a as by growth increment of dried root yield. length of main root and diameter of main root. respectively, 17.4~18.4 cm, 12.65~12.94 mm from HC, CC and FC application. There were significantly positive correlation between the growth characters of shoot, root parts of plants, dry root yield in Scutellaria baicalensis G. grown under organic compost application.

This study was conducted to investigate effects of mixture with dried food waste powder (FWP) and mixed organic fertilizer (MOF) on growth of pakchoi. As compared with non-fertilizer treatment (NF) or control (MOF treatment), growth of pakchoi in FWP treatments (2,500 kg/ha, 5,000 kg/ha, 10,000 kg/ha) was inhibited by salt (NaCl) content in the FWP. In comparison with control, mixtures of MOF and FWP (FWP10, FWP20, and FWP30 treatment) were not significantly different, and their salt content correlated with pakchoi growth factors negatively (P<0.05). Applied of FWP10, (FWP10: 2,500 kg/ha, 2FWP10: 5,000 kg/ha, 3FWP10: 7,500 kg/ha, 4FWP10: 10,000 kg/ha), growth factors of FWP10, 2FWP10 and 3FWP10 treatment were not significantly different than those of chemical fertilizer treatment, and of 4FWP10 decreased. Correlation coefficient between NaCl supply by FWP10 application and growth factor was negative (P<0.01). These results indicated that FWP was used as another source of organic fertilizer, and the organic fertilizers blending with FWP inhibited a pakchoi growth by increase of salt content containing in the them or of salt supplying amount after their application.
A batch-type study was conducted to investigate the phosphorus release and uptake under anaerobic and aerobic conditions according to organic loading changes. As organic loading increased, anaerobic P release increased but aerobic P uptake decreased. Where organic carbon contents remain high in aerobic conditions, PHB consumption within the microbial cells diminished, therefore it was found that in order to enhance P uptake rate, it should reach the endogenous growth stage where the entire organic loading was consumed.

A grower broiler experiment (from 14 to 35 days of age) was conducted to study the effect of using two commercial mixtures of organic acids (Galliacid$^{(R)}$ and Biacid$^{(R)}$) to substitute antibiotic growth promoter (Eneramycin$^{(R)}$) on performance, carcass characteristics and intestinal microflora. 400 (Ross 308) broiler chicks were used. A basal corn-soybean meal diet were formulated and served as a control treatment. The control diet was supplemented with either 0.06% Galliacid, 0.1% Biacid or 0.02% Eneramycin. Birds fed the Galliacid-supplemented diet had 16% (p<0.001) more gain than the control, while those fed the Biacid- or Enramycinsupplemented diets recorded 3 and 5.5% more gain, respectively. Organic acids mixtures and Enramycin supplementation significantly (p<0.001) improved feed conversion ratio. These results indicated that birds fed either organic acid mixtures or Enramycinsupplemented diets utilized feed more efficiently than those fed the control diet. Galliacid significantly (p<0.01) increased dressing percentage and bursa weight (% body weight). No significant differences were detected on liver, spleen and thymus (% body weight) among treatments. Galliacid or Biacid significantly (p<0.001) decreased intestinal Escherichia coli and Salmonella compared to the control and Enramycin-supplemented diets. Dietary Enramycin significantly (p<0.001) decreased Escherichia coli, but had no effect on Salmonella counts. In conclusion, organic acid mixtures are more efficient than antibiotic growth promoter (Enramycin) in improving broiler performance and decreasing intestinal Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp., and could be successfully used to substitute antibiotic growth promoters in broiler diets. However, not all of the organic acid mixtures gave the same effect either on performance or intestinal bacterial counts.
The growth conditions of Pantoea aggicmerans, a phosphate solubilizing organism, were studied In our laboratory to determine the optimal conditions. Pantoea aggionerans showed the highest growth rate at 30$\^{C}$, pH 7.0 and 2 vvm, after 50 h cultivation. A certain relationship between pH and phosphate concentration was evident when the glucose concentration in the me dium was changed. Increasing glucose concentration increased the pH buffer action of the broth. At glucose concentrations higher than the optimum concentration of 0.2 M, the cell growth was retarded. P. agglomerans consumed glucose as a substrate to produce organic acids which caused the pH decrease in the culture medium. The phosphate concentration in the medium was increased by the presence of the organic acids, which solubilized insoluble phosphates such as hydroxyapa-tite.
Twelve bacterial strains capable of growing on phenol minimal medium were isolated from iron foundry activated sludge by enrichment culture, and amount them, one isolate which was the best in cell growth and phenol degradation was selected and identified as Acinetobacter junii POH. The optimal temperature, initial pH and phenol concentration in the above medium were 3$0^{\circ}C$, 7.5 and 1000 ppm, respectively. Cell growth of Acinetobacter junii POH dramatically increased 20 hrs cultivation-time and reached a almost stationary phsae 40 hrs cultivation-time then phenol was degraded about 98%. Cell growth was inhibited y phenol at concentrations over 1500 ppm. The isolate was resistant to several antibiotics as well as various heavy metal ions. The growth-limiting log P value of Acinetobacter junii POH on organic solvents was 2.9 in the LB medium. Therefore, it is suggested that Acinetobacter junii POH could be effectively used for the biological treatment of wastewater containing the presence of heavy metal ions and organic solvents.
The effects of seawater on growth of lettuce(Lactuca sativa L.), leaf perilla(Perilla frutescens var. japonica Hara), red pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) and cucumber(Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings were investigated in the glass greenhouse. These effects were studied on seedlings, and diluted seawater (1%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 50%, 100% v/v) was sprayed enough on leaves. The tested four vegetable crops have well grown up to 10% diluted seawater, but the tested vegetable crops were damaged from increasing salt levels. Of these, lettuce was provided salt-tolerant vegetable crop and red pepper was considered salt-sensitive vegetable crop. The salt tolerance of vegetable crops is different between crops and complicated because of additional detrimental effects caused by accumulated ions or specific ion toxicities in their leaves. These results show that agricultural use of seawater may be benefit crop cultivation in organic farming system as well as in conventional farming system.

Background: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of germanium treatment on the growth and organic germanium production in the roots of Oplopanax elatus plantlets. Methods and Results: O. elatus plantlets were cultured in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with different concentrations of germanium dioxide ($GeO_2$) to analyze optimum growth conditions. Exogenous treatment of $10mg/{\ell}\;GeO_2$ promoted growth and an increase in the contents of chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid in O. elatus. The germanium accumulation and production in roots of O. elatus plantlets treated with organic germanium reached the highest levels. The growth of the aerial and underground portion of O. elatus with organic germanium was greater than that of the control. The accumulation and production of organic germanium reached the highest level ($40.89{\mu}g/plantlet$) with the treatment of $50mg/{\ell}\;GeO_2$. Antioxidant activity measured by DPPH and ABTS assays also increased with the germanium treatment and improved the DPPH and ABTS radical activity by 200% compared with that in the control. In addition, the total phenol and flavonoid contents of the plantlets with a treatment of $50mg/{\ell}\;GeO_2$ were higher than in the control. Conclusions: Taken together, the growth of O. elatus was increased with the treatment of $50mg/{\ell}\;GeO_2$ germanium and the biological references improved, with increased antioxidant activity and organic germanium production.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of different feed conditions on growth, cast production and conversion efficiency of organic matter to the earthworm. The experiment was tested on cow manure(CM) mixed with rice hulls (RH) or rice straw(RS). The mixture ratios were designed as one time, two times and three times of cow manure volume, respectively. The CM and RH mixtures resulted better on growth rate, reproductive efficiency and wormcast production than those for CM and RS mixtures. Especially on three times of RH mixture showed the highest growth characteristics compared to the other mixtures. Although both were between 20 and 34 on carbon and nitrogen ratio, the result inferred that the difference on the growth might have been caused by feeding conditions. On the mixtures of cow manure with rice hulls(CM+RH) was significantly higher on values on the conversion rate and conversion efficiency of organic matter to earthworm tissues than the mixtures of cow manure with rice straw(CM+RS). The most concerned point of the mixture of earthworm feed is that high contents of volatile solid and total carbon that increases in conversion efficiency of organic matter to earthworm tissues, and also causes the increase in growth rate and reproductive efficiency. The wormcast could be used as a valuable plant growth medium or soil conditioner for sustainable agriculture and it may be due to their high qualities of physico-chemical properties.
The stressful physiological and environmental conditions around weaning often promote the proliferation of pathogens in the digestive tract of piglets resulting in diarrhoea and reduced daily weight gain. Typical dietary practices to maintain growth performance and health have led to an increased use of antimicrobial growth promoters. Due to the advanced ban of antibiotics in pig production, new concepts have been developed to secure animal health and growth performance, feed efficiency, and product quality as well. Several naturally occurring compounds seem to beneficially affect the composition and activity of the microflora in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of pigs. These are, among others, organic acids, probiotics, prebiotics, and enzymes. Organic acids are already widely used, especially in pigs, due to their positive effects on GIT health and growth performance. Probiotics have been shown to be effective against diarrhoea though effects may be dependent on diet composition and environmental conditions. Prebiotics may influence composition and activity of the intestinal microflora. Additionally, pre- and probiotics may exert positive influences on immune response, whereas enzymes may enhance feed digestibility by breaking down anti-nutritional factors. In the following, the focus will be directed to the role of organic acids, probiotics, prebiotics, and feeding enzymes as potential modulators of GIT health.
