  • A numerical formula that presents relationship between a point of a satellite image and its ground position is called a sensor model. For precise geolocation of satellite images, we need an error-free sensor model. However, the sensor model based on GOES ephemeris data has some error, in particular after Image Motion Compensation (IMC) mechanism has been turned off. To solve this problem, we investigate three sensor models: Collinearity model, Direct Linear Transform (DLT) model and Orbit-based model. We apply matching between GOES images and global coastline database and use successful results as control points. With control points we improve the initial image geolocation accuracy using the three models. We compare results from three sensor models that are applied to GOES-9 images. As a result, a suitable sensor model for precise geolocation of GOES-9 images is proposed.

  • The attitude dynamics of KITSAT-1 are modeled including the gravity gradient stabilization method. We define the operation scenario during the initial attitude stabilization period by means of a magnetorquering control algorithm. The required constraints for the gravity gradient boom deployment are also examined. Attitude dynamics model and control laws are verified by analyzing in-orbit attitude sensor telemetry data.

  • The horizontal geo-location accuracy of KOMPSAT-2, without GCPs (Ground Control Points) is 80 meters CE90 for monoscopic image of up to 26 degrees off-nadir angle, after processing including POD (Precise Orbit Determination), PAD(Precise Attitude Determination) and AOCS (Attitude and Orbit Control Subsystem) sensor calibration. In case of multiple stereo images, without GCPs, the vertical geometric accuracy is less than 22.4 meters LE 90 and the horizontal geometric accuracy is less than 25.4 meters. There are two types of sensor model for KOMPSAT-2, direct sensor model and Rational Function Model (RFM). In general, a sensor model relates object coordinates to image coordinates The major objective of this investigation is to check and verify the geometrical performance when initial KOMPSAT-2 images are employed and briefly introduce the sensor model of KOMPSAT-2.

  • The attitude knowledge error model is formulated for specifically KOMPSAT attitude determination system using the Lefferts/Markley/Shuster method, and the attitude determination(AD) error analysis is performed so as to investgate the on-board attitude determination capability of KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT) using the covariance analysis method. Analysis results show there is almost no initial value effect on Attitude Determination (AD) error and the sensor noise effects on AD error are drastically decreased as is predicted because of the inherent characteristic of Kalman filter structure. However, it shows that the earth radiance effect of IR-sensor(earth sensor) and the bias effects of both IR-sensor and fine sun sensor are the dominant factors degrading AD error and gyro rate bias estimate error in AD system. Analysis results show that the attitude determination errors of roll, pitch and yaw axes are 0.056, 0.092 and 0.093 degrees, respectively. These numbers are smaller than the required values for the normal mission of KOMPSAT. Also, the selected on-orbit data of KOMPSAT is presented to demonstrate the designed AD system.

  • In this study, the orbit-based sensor modeling is applied to the digital plotting and the accuracy of digital plotting is analyzed. The KOMPSAT-2 satellite image with orbit-attitude model is used for the analysis. The precise sensor modeling with various combination of parameters is performed for the stereo satellite image. In addition, we analyze the error range of ground control points by applying the result of stereo modeling to digital survey system. According to the result, it is possible to produce digital map using stereo image with a small number of GCPs when the orbit-based sensor modeling for KOMPSAT-2 is applied. This means that it is suitable for the generation of digital map on a scale of 1/5,000 to 1/25,000 considering the resolution of KOMPSAT-2 image.

  • In this paper, we investigate the accuracy of various sensor models developed for linear pushbroom satellite images. We define the accuracy of a sensor model in two aspects: the accuracy of bundle adjustments and the accuracy of estimating exterior orientation parameters. The first accuracy has been analyzed and reported frequently whereas the second accuracy has somewhat been neglected. We argue that the second accuracy is as important as the first one. The second accuracy describes a model's ability to predict satellite orbit and attitude, which has many direct and indirect applications. Analysis was carried out on the traditional collinearity-based sensor models and orbit-based sensor models. Collinearity-based models were originally developed for aerial photos and modified for linear pushbroom-type satellite images. Orbit-based models have been used within satellite communities for satellite control and orbit determination. Models were tested with two Kompsat-1 EOC scenes and GPS-driven control points. Test results showed that orbit-based models produced better estimation of exterior orientation parameters while maintained comparable accuracy on bundle adjustments.

  • CSSA(Coarse Sun Sensor Assembly) is the essential sensor for satellite attitude control. CSSA measures the direction of the sun's rays and determines whether the satellite is in the eclipse or not. The paper shows the development process and test results of CSSA flight model for low earth orbit satellite. After analyzing the functional test results, we can make a decision whether the unit meets the requirements. We needs the definite and precision procedure and lots of experience. We could improve those through the development of Qualified Model for CSSA and so obtain the results to meet the functional requirement at the Flight model.

  • The simple method of the geometric reconstruction of satellite linear pushbroom images is investigated. The model of the sensor used is based on the SPOT model that is developed by Kraiky. The satellite trajectory is a Keplerian trajectory in the approximation. Four orbital parameters, longitude of the ascending $node(\omega),$ inclination of the orbit plan(I), latitude argument of the satellite(W) and distance between earth center and satellite, are used for the camera modeling. We suppose that four orbital parameters and satellite attitude angles are exactly acquired. Then, in order to refine model, the given attitude angles and orbital parameters is not changed, but time-independent four parameters associated with LOS(Line Of Sight) vector is updated. A pair of SPOT-5 images has been used for validation of proposed method. Two GCPs acquired by GPS survey is used to controlling the LOS vector. The results are that the RMSE of 16 checking points are about 4.5m. Because the ground resolution of SPOT-5 is 2.5m, the result obtained in this study has a good accuracy. It demonstrates that the sensor model developed by this study can be used to reconstruct the geometry of satellite image taken by pushbroom camera.
