  • A new grafting cactus 'Yeomyeong' was developed by an interspecific crossing between Gymnocalycium marsoneri and G mihanovichii at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration in 2005. In 2001, an interspecific crossing line '9922012' with orange color was selected from the cross of G. marsoneri ${\times}$ G. mihanovichii 'IG-112'. The line '9922012' as a female parent was crossed with G. mihanovichii 'IG-177', and the orange colored lines were obtained in 2002. The 'Wonkyo G1-159' was selected from the orange colored lines through three times of characteristic evaluation during 2003 to 2005. The 'Wonkyo G1-1 59' was named 'Yeomyeong' in the RDA in 2005. The color of both body and tubercle was orange. The shape of globe was flattened round and it had 7 to 9 ribs. The spine was erect, short sized and grayish brown color. Growth was faster, reaching 41.8-47.7 mm in diameter, than the comparison cultivar 'Hwangwol', at 10 months after planting. The number of tubercle was 6.9-12 per globe. 'Yeomyeong' was developed for export to the America and the Netherlands. Characteristics of the cultivar could be maintained by grafting on the Hylocereus trigomus.

  • The importance of high capacity energy storage devices has recently emerged for stable power supply through renewable energy generation. From this point of view, the Na-air battery (NAB), which is a next-generation secondary battery, is receiving huge attention because it can realize a high capacity through abundant and inexpensive raw materials. In this study, activated carbon-based catalysts for hybrid type Na-air batteries were prepared and their characteristics were compared and analysed. In particular, from the viewpoint of resource recycling, activated carbon (Orange-C) was prepared using discarded orange peel, and performance was compared with Vulcan carbon, which is widely used. In addition, a Pt/C catalyst (homemade-Pt/C, HM-Pt/C) was synthesized using a modified polyol method to check whether the prepared activated carbon can be used as a supported catalyst, and a commercial Pt/C catalyst (Commercial Pt/C) and electrochemical performance were compared. The prepared Orange-C exhibited a typical H3 type BET isotherm, which is evidence that micropore and mesopore exist. In addition, in the case of HM-Pt/C, it was confirmed through TEM analysis that Pt particles were evenly distributed on the activated carbon supported catalyst. In particular, the HM-Pt/C-based NAB showed the smallest voltage gap (0.224V) and good voltage efficiency (92.34%) in the 1st galvanostatic charge-discharge test. In addition, the cycle performance test conducted for 20 cycles showed the most stable performance.

  • A new application of monoacidic dye is reported for the determination of pipethanate hydrochloride(PTH). The method is based on solvent extraction into chloroform of an ion-pair compound formed between methyl orange(MO) and PTH. PTH is determined by measuring absorbance of the extracts over the range of $2.0{\sim}12.0{\mu}g/ml$ at 420nm. Best accuracy can be obtained for solutions containing $3.0{\sim}8.0{\mu}g/ml$. The color was stable for at least 5 days. The molar absorptivity was $2.88\;{\times}\;10^4\;l,\;mol^{-1},\;cm^{-1}$. Molar ratio and continuous variation plots have a maximum at 0.5 mol fraction of MO, indicating a 1 : 1 MO-PTH ratio.

  • The characteristics of photocatalytic decomposition of dye waste water by titanium dioxide was studied in a batch reactor under constant strength of ultra-violet ray. The decomposition rate of methyl orange by TiO$_2$ was pseudo-first order, anatase type TiO$_2$ was more effective than rutile type below the dosage of 5g. The decomposition rate was increased with decreasing initial pH, increasing reaction temperature and oxidant concentration. The decomposition rate of water soluble dyes was decreased in order of rhodamine B>eosin Y>methyl orange.

  • A novel ceramic synthesis technique, combustion synthesis, is explored to produce an orange-emitting $SnO_2:Eu^{3+}$ phosphors. This technique involves a reaction of metal salts with a citric acid as an organic fuel. The variation of the ratio of citric acid to metal introduces change in reaction temperature and atmosphere of the combustion reaction, which in turn influences crystallinity and luminescence properties of the final products significantly. And the heat treatment of the as-synthesized product improved the CL intensity of the products. Especially, the sample treated at above 1100 $^{\circ}C$ shows an orange-emission, which is attributed to the formation of single phase and well-crystallized $SnO_2$:Eu in rutile structure.

  • With the view of studying on the dual adsorption mechanism of acid dyes in connection with the structural difference of silk fibroin, silk fiber and silk fibroin memberane were used for equilibrium dyeing at $60^{\circ}C$, $70^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$ and pH 3.2, pH 5.0. The dyes used were C.I.Acid Orange 7 and C.I.Acid Red 88 introduced aromatic hydrocabon into Acid Orange 7. From the adsorption isotherm experiment, the total uptake of dyes can be described by Langmuir sorption and Nernst partition. Nernst partition. Nernst partition coefficient $K_1$ decrease of crystalline regions and orientation. The saturation value S of Acid Red 88 were large than total amino group contents and it was attributed it hydrophobic bond. On the other hand, the standard afficity and enthalpy were increased with the in crease of hydrophobic part of dyes. Both $k_1$ and $K_2$ were decreased with the increase of pH, but $k_2$ were more effected than $K_1$.

  • In this paper a simple and rapid method is described for the determination of lead in monazite. A monazite sample was dissolved with hot concentrated sulfuric acid and diluted to 200 ml with distilled water. Lead is quatitatively separated by coprecipitating with strontium. Lead-strontium sulfate is dissolved in 3N NaOH soluion. An excess Zn-EDTA is added. The remaining zinc ion is titrated with standard 0.01 M EDTA solution using xylenol orange as indicator at pH 5 in the presence of KCN and acetyl acetone as masking agents.

  • Experiments were carried out to know the effects of emulsifiable DBCP, (Dibromo Chloropropane) for control of the citrus-root nematode, Tylenchulus semipenetrans in Orchards of chinese citron and mandarine orange for four years of 1967-1970. Nematode population density decreased as the amount of DBCP increased. In mandarine orange orchard, the nematode population density decreased after second treatment mainly because of bad drainage of the soil, while in Chinese citron orchard, it fell off sharply after just one treatment since the soil was well drained. Yields of Chinese citron increased as much as $26\%$ in 4.4l/10a injection, 1$18\%$ in 4.4l/10a drench; yields of mandarine orange increased as much as $11\%$ in 4.41/10a injection and $13\%$ in 4.4l/10a drench.

  • Nanocrystalline $Ca_2Gd_8Si_6O_{26}$ (CGS) : $Sm^{3+}$ and CGS : $Tb^{3+}/Sm^{3+}$ phosphors were prepared by solvothermal reaction method for light emitting diode (LED) and field emission display (FED) applications. The XRD patterns of these phosphors confirmed their oxyapatite structure in the hexagonal lattice. The visible luminescence properties of these phosphors were investigated by exciting with ultraviolet (UV) or near-UV light and low voltage electron beam. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of $Ca_2Gd_8Si_6O_{26}$ (CGS) : $Sm^{3+}$ and CGS : $Tb^{3+}/Sm^{3+}$ phosphors were investigated as a function of $Sm^{3+}$ concentration. Cathodoluminescence (CL) properties were examined by changing the acceleration voltage. The CGS : $Sm^{3+}$ showed the dominant orange emission due to the $^4G_{5/2}{\rightarrow}^6H_{7/2}$ transition. The CGS : $Tb^{3+}/Sm^{3+}$ phosphor showed the green, white and orange emissions when excited with 275, 378, and 405 nm wavelengths, respectively. The chromaticity coordinates of these phosphors were comparable to or better than those of standard phosphors for LED or FED devices.
