This study was conducted to identify factors related to discomfort while speaking in the elderly and provide fundamental data for establishing oral health care policies for a healthy old age. Using the raw data from the 8th wave of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2020), we conducted an analysis to examine the relationship between speaking discomfort and mental health, as well as oral health care behavior, among 1,278 elderly individuals in Korea. Differences in speaking discomfort were analyzed based on general characteristics, mental health, and oral health care behavior using complex sample cross-analysis. Additionally, factors associated with speaking discomfort were analyzed using complex sample multiple logistic regression analysis. As a result, individuals with depression experienced higher levels of speaking discomfort (p<0.05), and individuals experiencing high levels of stress also reported higher levels of speaking discomfort (p<0.05). As a factor affecting speaking discomfort, it was found that speaking discomfort was 2.56 times higher (p<0.001) when dental care was not met, and speaking discomfort was 3.05 times higher (p<0.05) when teeth brushing was less frequent. As a result of the aforementioned findings, it is believed that a customized oral health promotion program is necessary to expand dental health insurance coverage for the elderly and improve oral healthcare.

Among the copies of the questionnaire distributed to the subjects, 318 were recollected. Out the recollected forms, 18 which were deemed as in appropriately filled in were excluded, and the remaining 300 were finally analyzed. The results are as follows. Subjective oral symptoms and masticatory performance have correlation(p<0.001) with aged people's life quality. Factors of influencing life quality were indicated to be gender(p=0.046), age(p=0.008), appearance of living together(<0.001), masticatory performance(p<0.001), and temperature reaction(p=0.018). This study has limitation because of being information that was obtained just with questionnaire survey on subjective oral symptoms. It is considered that there is a need of surveying along with objective data on oral symptoms hereafter.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of chronic disease on oral health behavior. Methods: The subjects were 317 adults over 30-years old living in urban and rural areas. They were selected by convenience sampling method and filled out the self-reported questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, dental treatment, chronic disease, and oral health behavior including oral health self-care behavior and professional oral health care. Results: The self-care oral health behavior and the professional oral health care had a negative correlation with the chronic diseases. Especially, the self-care oral health behavior and the professional oral health care had a statistically significant negative correlation with hypertension and osteoporosis. Multiple regression analysis was performed after including general characteristics, dental treatment, chronic disease. Meanwhile the presence of chronic disease had a significant influence on the self-care oral health behavior and the professional oral health care. Hypertension and Osteoporosis were the most influential factors of chronic diseases and had a significant influence on the oral health behavior. In conclusion, the chronic diseases aggravated the oral health behavior practice. Conclusions: presence of chronic disease affects oral health behavior. Therefore, the effective intervention and education programs related to oral health care are necessary to enhance adult's oral health behavior and total health. The goals of this study were to investigate depression and oral health-related quality of life in the military and public and to identify the factors affecting depression. The respondents were 278 soldiers and 228 general people of similar ages. An independent t-test was used to examine the differences between the two groups in the oral health impact profile and Self-rating Depression Scale. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the factors associated with depression in soldiers and the public. The depression level was significantly higher in the general population than in the military personnel (p<0.001). In contrast, the oral health-related quality of life was better in the general population than in the military, but without a statistical significance (p=0.056). Among soldiers, the military rank was the only factor associated with depression, showing a gradient based on the rank. In the general population, the type of work displayed significant associations with depression. As there are some limitations to investigating the factors affecting depression, comparative analyses of the general population groups with similar soldier groups are rare. This study encourages future investigations of the advancements in mental health and improvement programs for oral health in each group.
The purpose of this study is to provide a set of fundamental data for the oral hygiene education for the elderly as a result of the survey on the oral hygiene and subjective oral health of the elderly in an aged society. For this purpose, 269 elders who dwelled in Gyeongsangbuk-do region were randomly selected in an arbitrary selection process, followed by a survey on their oral hygiene and health. The collected data were coded and processed by using SPSS 15.0 software. As for the analysis of the data, the general characteristics and the basic items concerning the management of the oral health were analyzed for their frequency and percentages, while the general characteristics and the awareness on the oral health were processed with Chi-square validation to show a set of results as follows; Firstly, among the items on the oral health, the satisfaction on the current condition of their oral health was below average. Secondly, concerning the oral hygienic behaviors, the majority of the samples answered that they were brushing their teeth twice a day. And, as for the brushing methods, the largest number of the samples answered that they were brushing their teeth in a 'horizontal direction'. Thirdly, they reported they were having difficulties in getting dental treatments. The implications of this study are that it is necessary to provide sound oral health education to them to correct the inappropriate oral hygienic behaviors.

Methods: Data were obtained from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Services (HIRA) including the profiles of LTCHs, monthly patient assessment reports and medical report survey data of pneumonia patients by HIRA in the fourth quarter of 2010. The sample consisted of 37 LTCHs and 6,593 patients. Results: Patient per nurse staff (OR=1.43, CI=1.22~1.68) and no oral care (OR=1.29, CI=1.01~1.64) were significantly related with hospital acquired pneumonia. The difference in percent of oral care by hospital was not significant between high and low group in nurse staffing level. Conclusion: In order to reduce the occurrence of pneumonia in eldery patients, effective nursing interventions are not only required but also nurse staffing levels that enable nurses to provide the intervention.
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between characteristics of obesity and oral diseases by sex and grade. To achieve this, a survey was carried out on 830 students at just an elementary school in Chungnam area. The results of this study are as follows. First, the relationship between dental caries and malocclusion prevalence according to obesity by sex and grade showed that there was no difference between dental caries and malocclusion prevalence by sex, and dental caries prevalence by grade. Second, the difference in the level of dental health according to obesity showed that overweight students had more both caries teeth and loss teeth than normal students. Third, the relationship between obesity and the level of dental health showed that overweight students had many caries teeth and loss teeth. In particular, obesity had higher relationship with caries teeth than loss teeth. As the childhood is the period of time when the range of socialization is extended to schools from families, schools are important life zones for children. Consequently, the continuous and intensive instruction of health problems in schools needs to be comprehensively approached in terms of education.
