This study aims to analyze the relationship with oral health status through oral examinations, microorganism tests, and surveys of college students and present basic data necessary for the development of oral health education programs to prevent. Results of students who did not receive brushing education showed high motile activities of microorganism, and there was a significant relationship in which students with a large amount of microorganism subjectively felt more tooth pain. Symptoms of halitosis were greater in the DT, there were differences in the type of bacteria and the amount of bacteria in the MT, and oral health was worse if oral aids were not used in the DMFT index. Therefore, it was confirmed that oral health behavior, subjective oral health awareness, and the amount of microorganism had a significant relationship with oral health status. It will be necessary to develop and share and spread customized oral health education media for each life cycle.
Objectives : The present study purposed to survey the oral health-related quality of life among elderly in metropolis Methods : We had individual interviews and oral survey using a questionnaire with 336 elderly who were using seniors' centers in Metropolitan City during the period from the $9^{th}$ to $31^{st}$ of July, 2007. Purpose: This study analyzed raw data from the 2022 Korean Community Health Survey (KCHS) to explore the relationship between physical activities and the mental health of middle-aged individuals, and examined factors influencing chewing discomfort. Materials and Methods: Data pertaining to 104,500 middle-aged people aged between 40 and 64 were analyzed. The variables analyzed included general characteristics, perceived level of health, level of oral health, physical activities, mental health (PHQ-9), and status of chewing discomfort. Cross-analysis was conducted to explore the differences in general characteristics, physical activities, mental health factors, and chewing discomfort status. Meanwhile, logistic regression analysis was performed on factors influencing chewing discomfort. Results: It was observed that chewing discomfort was more severe for middle-aged individuals who reported that their oral health level was neither good nor poor compared with those who reported that their oral health was good (OR: 8.443, P < 0.001), those who reported that their perceived level of health was poor (OR: 49.173, P < 0.001), those who reported not performing the walking exercise (OR: 1.354, P < 0.001), those who reported that they had suicidal ideation compared with those who did not (OR: 2.543, P < 0.001), those who reported that they had made a suicidal attempt compared with those who had not (OR: 4.456, P < 0.001), and those who reported that their level of depression was severe or more serious (OR: 4.624, P < 0.001). Conclusion: In middle-aged individuals, physical activities and mental health needs to be considered as a risk factor in the improvement of oral health.

Purpose: It has been reported that xylitol and sorbitol affect antifungal activities by enhancing antimicrobial activities of other substances. The purpose of this study was to investigate the direct candidacidal activities of xylitol and sorbitol at a wide range of concentration. Methods: Xylitol and sorbitol solubilized with simulated salivary buffer at a range of $0.8{\mu}M$ to 1.05 M were used. Candida albicans strains, ATCC strains 10231, 11006, and 18804 were used for the candidacidal assay. The candidacidal activities of xylitol and sorbitol were determined by comparing the numbers of colony forming units between in the presence and absence of xylitol or sorbitol and calculating the percent loss of cell viability. Results: There were some differences in the candidacidal activities according to the types of sugar alcohols and C. albicans strains. The candidacidal activity of more than 10% was observed when a final concentration of 32.9 mM in xylitol or sorbitol was maintained and that of about 20% was observed when a final concentration of 131 mM was maintained. Even at a high concentration of 1.05 M, the candidacidal activity of xylitol or sorbitol was about 20%. Conclusions: Xylitol and sorbitol at the concentrations used in commercial oral health care products had some levels of candidacidal activities.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to apply an effective oral health promotion program and effect for underprivileged lower grade students. This study attempted to resolve some oral health inequality issues by providing underprivileged children with an oral health action program designed to promote positive oral health maintenance habits. Methods: This study was carried from May to August of 2009 with 77(control group 27 subjects, experimental group 36 subjects) elementary school students selected among first to third graders attending regional welfare center's after school program in Seoul. To the control group, conventional education methods were applied. To the experimental group, newly designed program was conducted by three project experts(1 expert, 1 dentist, 1 dental hygienist). It consisted of 5 sessions and progressed with various activities. It was focused on achieving target knowledge and changing oral health behavior. In order to evaluate the designed educational program, learners' achievement was evaluated with implementing the questionnaire and one-on-one interviews. And also the oral health improvement was evaluated based on change of Patient Hygiene Performance(PHP) index. Results: Based on the results of learners' achievement, the experimental group showed the significant increment of the oral health knowledge by the relapsed time, and it maintained after finished the program(p<0.001). The patient hygiene performance index showed not significant changed(p>0.05), but 1 month later the control group showed an increment of the PHP score, but the experimental group showed a decrement of it. Conclusions: Oral health promotion program by project approach could give a long-lasting educational effect to the children and encouraged proper oral hygiene behavioral changes.
In this study, the amalgamative relationship associated with oral health belief and preventive behavior against oral disease subject to middle aged people was analyzed. 20 persons in their middle age living in U city were selected as final subjects for this analysis. It was found that a factor with the strongest effect on intention to prevent oral disease and preventive behavior among oral health belief was importance. In the study, it was identified that the parameters such as importance and benefit had a partial mediating effect on the intention to prevent oral disease and self-efficacy had complete mediating effect. Through these results, it seems necessary to develop an intervention program for middle aged people able to recognize importance and benefits of oral health by themselves in order to promote their oral health.
In preparing for the era of Korean reunification, it is essential to consider the integration of medical systems and human resources. While Korean dental practitioners are expanding their activities in various fields both domestically and internationally, there are many restrictions on the activities for improving the health of North Korean people due to political and historical reasons even nowadays. In addition, there is little is known about the current state of dental health in North Korea. We analyzed the reports published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Public Health of North Korea prepared individually or in cooperation, and investigated the current status of the health care strategy applied to the dental field by conducting a full investigation of the 2018 『Rodong』newspaper. Based on the above, we tried to grasp the major health care strategies in North Korea and their application. Understanding the direction and status of North Korea's health care system would be an important cornerstone for international cooperation and practical activities to improve oral health care of North Koreans in the future. And there is a need that studies should be steadily conducted in various methods to overcome the heterogeneity of the two Koreas in the long-term perspective.
South Korea's oral health care non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have played a crucial role in South-North relations, although a formal intergovernmental relationship is difficult to establish and also easily breaks down. Humanitarian assistance by NGOs in the oral health care sector is an area that receives wide support from South Korean society for its urgency and for its appeal to humanity. This humanitarian assistance started in the late 1990's and continued to grow until the late 2000's. This assistance continued throughout the tension between the two administrations that resulted in a radical decrease in overall assistance from South Korea to North Korea. However, concerns remain about the transparency and efficiency of NGO activities. In this article, the NGOs and their major activities are delineated, and South Korean legislation is examined. A current act, the Law on the Development of South and North Korean Relations serves as a basis for governmental regulation and support of NGO's. Humanitarian assistance in the oral healthcare area is directly related to the oral health of the North Korean people, and it should not be influenced by political changes. Long-term planning and close discussions between NGOs, their North Korean counterparts, and the South Korean government are needed. NGOs need to overcome their shortcomings such as a lack of expertise and shortage of financial support. For this, NGOs must improve their administration transparency and professionalism.
