Purpose: In spite of various advantages of hyaluronic acid in wound healing, there are few research about wound healing process and period in oral and maxillofacial surgery. So, We evaluated the effects of local application of hyaluronic acid gel on wound healing of the oral mucosa using this animal model. Materials and methods: Young adult New Zealand White rabbits, weighting between 2.5 and 3.0kg, were used. Almost uniform round ulcers could be created on the gingival of the rabbits by chemical injury with acetic acid. In experimental group, hyaluronic acid gel was applied daily until the wounds healed and in control group, ulcer lesion was not any treatment. The lengths of ulcers were measured the longest and shortest axes of the ulcers and calculated the areas of ulcer. For histological examination, specimens were made, and observed under a light microscope. Results: The results showed that the number of fibroblasts, new blood vessels and the epithelial thickness from experimental group was higher than from control group. Hyaluronic acid promoted proliferation of the fibroblast, keratinocytes isolated from gingival tissue of rabbits in vitro. Topical application of hyaluronic acid accelerated healing of ulcers created in rabbits. Conclusion: The hyaluronic acid may be effective for wound healing of oral mucosal lesions.
Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue(MALT) lymphoma is thought to originate from marginal zone B-cells. In the WHO classification, Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of MALT is classified B-cell Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Common sites of MALT lymphoma include stomach, lung and the ocular-adnexa. Although less common in other sites, it is the most common low-grade lymphoma of the breast, thyroid, bowel skin and soft tissue. No strong age or gender predominance exists in MALT lymphoma. Dissemination to other sites can occur. In the oral cavity, MALT lymphoma is rare. Herein, we present a case of intra-oral MALT lymphoma. 66 year-old woman without any background of immunodeficiency or autoimmune disease admitted department of oral & maxillofacial surgery in Ulsan university hospital for evaluation of long-standing mild upper lip swelling. The lesion was completely resected and biopsied. Histological and immunohistochemical stains(CD3, CD5, CD20, CD21, CK) findings were used to confirm the lesion. Bone marrow biopsy was done and no bone marrow involvement was found. She did not receive chemotherapy and radiotherapy after surgery. No recurrence has been noted in the 22 months to date.
Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric inflammation includes induction of inflammatory mediators interleukin (IL)-8 and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which are mediated by oxidant-sensitive transcription factor NF-${\kappa}B$. High levels of lipid peroxide (LPO) and increased activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO), a biomarker of neutrophil infiltration, are observed in H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa. Panax ginseng Meyer, a Korean herb medicine, is widely used in Asian countries for its biological activities including anti-inflammatory efficacy. The present study aims to investigate whether Korean Red Ginseng extract (RGE) inhibits H. pylori-induced gastric inflammation in Mongolian gerbils. One wk after intragastric inoculation with H. pylori, Mongolian gerbils were fed with either the control diet or the diet containing RGE (200 mg RGE/gerbil) for 6 wk. The following were determined in gastric mucosa: the number of viable H. pylori in stomach; MPO activity; LPO level; mRNA and protein levels of keratinocyte chemoattractant factor (KC, a rodent IL-8 homolog), IL-$1{\beta}$, and iNOS; protein level of phospho-$I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$(which reflects the activation of NF-${\kappa}B$); and histology. As a result, RGE suppressed H. pylori-induced mRNA and protein levels of KC, IL-$1{\beta}$, and iNOS in gastric mucosa. RGE also inhibited H. pylori-induced phosphorylation of $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ and increases in LPO level and MPO activity of gastric mucosa. RGE did not affect viable H. pylori colonization in the stomach, but improved the histological grade of infiltration of poly-morphonuclear neutrophils, intestinal metaplasia, and hyperplasia. In conclusion, RGE inhibits H. pyloriinduced gastric inflammation by suppressing induction of inflammatory mediators (KC, IL-$1{\beta}$, iNOS), MPO activity, and LPO level in H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa.

The nasal cavity encounters various irritants during inhalation such as dust and pathogens. To detect and remove these irritants, it has been postulated that the nasal mucosa epithelium has a specialized sensing system. The oral cavity, on the other hand, is known to have bitter taste receptors (T2Rs) that can detect harmful substances to prevent ingestion. Recently, solitary chemosensory cells expressing T2R subtypes have been found in the respiratory epithelium of rodents. In addition, T2Rs have been identified in the human airway epithelia. However, it is not clear which T2Rs are expressed in the human nasal mucosa epithelium and whether they mediate the removal of foreign materials through increased cilia movement. In our current study, we show that human T2R receptors indeed function also in the nasal mucosa epithelium. Our RT-PCR data indicate that the T2R subtypes (T2R3, T2R4, T2R5, T2R10, T2R13, T2R14, T2R39, T2R43, T2R44, T2R 45, T2R46, T2R47, T2R48, T2R49, and T2R50) are expressed in human nasal mucosa. Furthermore, we have found that T2R receptor activators such as bitter chemicals augments the ciliary beating frequency. Our results thus demonstrate that T2Rs are likely to function in the cleanup of inhaled dust and pathogens by increasing ciliary movement. This would suggest that T2Rs are feasible molecular targets for the development of novel treatment strategies for nasal infection and inflammation.
The purpose of this paper was to observe the influence of Ga-As semiconductor-low power generating laser on she appearance and actions of tenascin, extracellular matrix, as healing process of intentional wound on the experimental animals is taking place. 35 rabbits were divided into control and experimental group. ; and on each, 3mm-long and 2mm-deep, surgical wounds were created on buccal oral mucosa and thoracodorsal portion of skin. Ga-As laser was applied to the experimental group starting a day of the day the wounds were created , the laser was applied for 5 minutes every other day. Tissue samples were taken after the 2, 4, 7, 10, and 14 days after wound formation. Then tile healing process of experimental and control groups were observed and compared, using light microscope. Afterwards, the samples were immunohistochemical stained and again observed tenascin by quantitative measuring. The following results were obtained : 1. Tenascin was observed prevalently on epithelial cells, border area of dermis, and interstitial matrix between connective tissue layers in both experimental and control groups. 2. In oral mucosa, the experimental group showed significant increase in the appearance of tenascin after 4 days compared to the control group, but after 10 days, it decreased to a point which is even less than the control group. 3. In the skin samples, the pattern of appearance of tenascin was the same in both groups, but there was some difference concerning when the peak period was shown, In the experimental group, the peak period of tenascin expression was the 7 days after wound formation in epithelium and connective tissue. In the control group, the peak period was 10 days after. 4. In both the experimental and control groups, tenascin first appeared in the epithelium near the wound area and submucosa, and then spread on the underlying connective tissue. In conclusion, appearance of tenascin is closely related to regeneration of epithelium and development of granulation tissue : therefore, low power laser, which fastnes appearance of tenascin, is sure to faciltate healing process of oral mucosa.
This study was designed to investigate the effects of Garlic Jug A Jii, a popular processed food for Korean was given of HCI-ethanol in rats as experimental Model. Oral administration HCI-ethanol to fasted rats produced extensive necrosis in the gastric mucosa. Pretreatment with garlic juice and 3 week stored Garlic Jang A Jii juice prevented such necrosis and the effects were dose-dependent. The effects of garlic Jang A Jii juice comparing with raw garlic juice were reduced but statiscally significant differences were not found. 5 week-stored Garlic Jang A Jii was inhibited the formation of gastric mucosal injury. Comparing with garlic Jug A Jii for 3 weeks, while garlic Jang A Jii juice and 1 : 10 diluted garlic Jang A Jii juice did not show significant shifts but the effects of 1 100 diluted garlic Jang A Jii was decreased. Oral administration of disulfide prevented the gastric mucosa injury whereas sulfhydryl blockers such as N-ethylmaleimie and indomethacin was decreased on gastric mucosa protective effect. The content of diallyl disulfide was 1.41mg% in raw garlic, 0.96mg% in garlic Jang A Jii for 3 weeks. The content of diallyl disulfide was gradually reduced according to the elapse of storage period.

Acromegaloid Facial Appearance syndrome is a very rare syndrome combining acromegaloid-like facial appearance, thickened lips and oral mucosa and acral enlargement. Progressive facial dysmorphism is characterized by a coarse facies, a long bulbous nose, high-arched eyebrows, and thickening of the lips, oral mucosa leading to exaggerated rugae and frenula, furrowed tongue and narrow palpebral fissures. We report a case of acromegaloid facial appearance syndrome in a 19-year-old male patient who presented with all the characteristic features of the syndrome along with previously unreported anomalies like dystrophic nails, postaxial polydactyly and incisal notching of teeth.
In spite of the radical increase of chemical poisoning cases caused by prevalent of oranic chlorine like endosulfan, the study of detection of chemical poisoning has seldom been attempted; the study of poisoning in teeth, which is more secure physiochemically, and in all the oral tissues has been even less attempted. The author has administered endosulfan into the month of a rabbit, causing its death, and tried to detect endosulfan in the teeth, jaws, and oral tissues through forensic chemical and histopathological tests. The result obtained is as follows : 1. By thin layer chromatography, endosulfan was detected in the jews, dental hard tissues, dental pulp, blood, and the liver. 2. By gas chromatography, it was also detected in the jaws, dental hard tissues, dental pulp, blood, and the liver. 3. The congestion and hemorrhage in buccal mucosa, palatal mucosa, and dental pulp was detected.
Purpose: Examination was done of the effects on unplanned extubation, oral mucosa, and facial skin integrity in patients with oral intubation secured with a new method using Multifix Endo II. Methods: A prospective quasai-experimental design was used. Data were collected during a 3-week EICU admission period between Jun. 1 and Nov. 30. Two hundreds seventeen (conventional taping group: 105, Multifix Endo II group: 112) orally intubated adults were enrolled in the study at the EICU of the C University Hospital. Results: The incidence of unplanned extubation (${\chi}^2=11.580$, p=0.03) and scores for the facial skin integrity impairment of the Mutifix Endo II group (t=5.28, p=.000) were significantly lower than those of the conventional taping group even though the scores for oral mucosa impairment were not different. The nurse's evaluation of the clinical effectiveness of the two methods including convenience, comfort, safety, and satisfaction were also higher for the new securement method compared to the conventional taping group. Conclusion: The securement method using Mutifix Endo II was more effective than the conventional method in the prevention of unplanned extubation and maintenance facial skin integrity.

Venous malformation (VM) is a benign lesion of blood vessels caused by an error in vascular morphogenesis during the embryologic phase. This entity mostly affects the head and neck region, including the lips, tongue, buccal mucosa, gingiva, or palate. VM may cause functional and aesthetic impairments. The anatomical structure and shape of the lips provide an important aesthetic accent for an individual. Therefore, management of VM in the lip area without postoperative defects or scarring is challenging. In this brief communication article, we present a conservative approach to lip VM in a nine-year-old boy using a bleomycin injection that had good aesthetic and functional outcomes. Injection of 2 mL of 1/10 of 15 mg bleomycin in a saline dilution into the lip mucosa may present a drug reaction as a white plaque and reddish owl eye lesion that takes up to three weeks to resolve without a scar. It is important to recognize the characteristics and self-limiting nature of postoperative bleomycin complications to avoid unnecessary treatment.
