Factors affecting the Oral Impact on Daily Performances(OIDP) of College Students (대학생의 성별에 따른 일상생활구강영향지수(OIDP)에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Objectives: This study identified the many factors affecting the quality of life relating to oral health using oral impact on daily performances(OIDP) in college students according to gender. Methods: The subjects were college students who agree to participate in research Cheonan, Daegu, Ulsan. 314 college students were fill out the questionnaire themselves. Results were analyzed by using frequency, t-test, ANOVA, correlation Analysis and regression analysis of SPSS program ver. 21.0. Results: Oral impact on daily performances(OIDP) of influence Factors is as follows: The male is nicotine dependence, toothache and female is subjective oral health status, grade. Male have a positive effect on the quality of life relating to oral health when lower the nicotine dependence. Meanwhile, female have a positive effect on the quality of life relating to oral health when better the subjective oral health status and lower the grade. Both male and female have a positive effect on the quality of life relating to oral health when no more toothache. Conclusions: In this study, there was a difference in the factors affecting the quality of life relating to oral health according to gender. Therefore, oral health care measures should be a difference according to gender. Male's oral health promotion programs should be considered in conjunction with non-smoking education. For female, the age should be considered when developing an oral health promotion program.

Assessment of dental health related quality of life and satisfaction level in patients with orthodontic treatments using Oral Impact on Daily Performances (OIDP) (일상활동구강영향지수(OIDP)를 이용한 교정환자의 구강건강관련 삶의 질과 만족도 평가)

  • Objectives: This study is to assess the correlation of the changes in dental health-related quality of life before, during, and after orthodontic treatments in the patients. Methods: The self-administered survey was conducted in the patients who completed orthodontic treatments living in Seoul and metropolitan areas using Oral Impact on Daily Performances (OIDP) to identify the relevant factors. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics of variables, independent t-test, one way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. Results: From observations of OIDP before, during, and after orthodontic treatment, discomfort associated with three factors including physical, psychological and social ones showed the statistically significant increases during orthodontic treatment than before the treatment; whereas, it was dramatically dropped afterward. Multiple regression analysis to find the influential factors of satisfaction level on orthodontic treatment by setting before, during, and after OIDP as independent variables and satisfaction on orthodontic treatment as a dependent variable revealed that OIDP before orthodontic treatment and after orthodontic treatment significantly affected satisfaction on orthodontic treatment. Conclusions: The above analysis on the change in patients' dental health-related quality of life showed that the quality of life improved after the orthodontic treatment. Accordingly, patients' quality of life and satisfaction level on orthodontic treatment are expected to improve if they strive to maintain healthy dental health through orthodontic treatment.

Hippocampus-dependent cognitive enhancement induced by systemic gintonin administration

  • Background: A number of neurological and neurodegenerative diseases share impaired cognition as a common symptom. Therefore, the development of clinically applicable therapies to enhance cognition has yielded significant interest. Previously, we have shown that activation of lysophosphatidic acid receptors (LPARs) via gintonin application potentiates synaptic transmission by the blockade of $K^+$ channels in the mature hippocampus. However, whether gintonin may exert any beneficial impact directly on cognition at the neural circuitry level and the behavioral level has not been investigated. Methods: In the current study, we took advantage of gintonin, a novel LPAR agonist, to investigate the effect of gintonin-mediated LPAR activation on cognitive performances. Hippocampus-dependent fear memory test, synaptic plasticity in the hippocampal brain slices, and quantitative analysis on synaptic plasticity-related proteins were used. Results: Daily oral administration of gintonin for 1 wk significantly improved fear memory retention in the contextual fear-conditioning test in mice.We also found that oral administration of gintonin for 1 wk increased the expression of learning and memory-related proteins such as phosphorylated cyclic adenosine monophosphate-response element binding (CREB) protein and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). In addition, prolonged gintonin administration enhanced long-term potentiation in the hippocampus. Conclusion: Our observations suggest that the systemic gintonin administration could successfully improve contextual memory formation at the molecular and synaptic levels as well as the behavioral level. Therefore, oral administration of gintonin may serve as an effective noninvasive, nonsurgical method of enhancing cognitive functions.
