  • Feeding apparatus, mechanism and passage of ingested prey were described for Nemopilema nomurai (Scyphozoa: Rhizostomeae). N. nomurai medusae without central mouths have developed complicated canal systems connecting the tip of the tentacle and oral arm to the gut cavity. The number of junctions in the canal system increases with the bell diameter. The prey is gathered by paralyzing nematocyst at the tentacles and by adhering cirri at the oral arms and scapulets. They are engulfed into the terminal pore located at the oral arms and scapulets, and entered into the gut cavity via the canal system. The estimated digestion time is 1 hour and 20 min. The diameter of terminal pore is always about 1 mm, implying that they could not eat prey larger than that pore size. On the other hand, ephyrae have central mouths and could swallow prey as large as adults could. Exploitation of the same size of food by adult and ephyra implies that N. nomurai can affect seriously the whole food web, massively ingesting micro- and mesozooplankton and cutting the energy transfer toward the higher level of carnivores.

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of pine oil on the body weight and lipid levels of serum in rats fed high cholesterol diet and high fat diet, Body weight, weight of various organs, and feeding efficiency ratio were measured to study the effect of pine oil on obesty at 4 weeks after an oral administration, Total cholesterol, triglyceride, total lipid, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were also analysed to identify the ameliorating effect of pine oil on lipid metabolism in serum of same rats, The results were summerized as follows; 1. The increase in body weight and feeding efficiency ratio induced by choleserol diet was less in pine oil treated rats, Furthermore, decrease in weight of liver, kidney, spleen, testis, and epididymis were observed in pine oil treated rats. 2, Associated with the decrease in body weight, there was a concomitant reduction in serum levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, and total lipid in rats fed high cholesterol diet and high fat diet. respectively, after an oral administration of pine oil. 3. Serum levels of LDL-cholesterol was significantly decrease after an oral administration of pine oil in rats fed high fat diet. These results suggest that pine oil can ameliorate obesity and lipid metabolism in serum.

  • Background: Tumor-associated neoangiogenesis is a crucial target for antitumor therapies. Thalidomide (TAL) is a promising anti-neoangiogenetic drug that has recently been used in the treatment of several malignancies in dogs. Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the pharmacokinetics of TAL after single oral administration in dogs. Additionally, the influence of feeding on the pharmacokinetic profile of TAL in dogs has been preliminarily investigated. Methods: Six healthy adult female Labradors were enrolled according to a randomized single-dose, 2-treatment, 2-phase, paired 2 × 2 cross-over study design. The dogs were administered a single 400 mg capsule of TAL in fasted and fed conditions. Blood was collected from 15 min to 48 h after dosing, and TAL quantified in plasma by a validated high-performance liquid chromatography method. The pharmacokinetics of TAL were analyzed using a non-compartmental approach. Results: TAL concentration was quantifiable up to 10 h and 24 h after fasted and fed conditions, respectively. Cmax (fasted, 1.34 ± 0.12 ㎍/mL; fed, 2.47 ± 0.19 ㎍/mL) and Tmax (fasted, 3 h; fed, 10 h) differed substantially between the 2 groups. AUC and t1/2λz were significantly higher in fed (42.46 ± 6.64 mg × h/L; 17.14 ± 4.68 h) compared to fasted (12.38 ± 1.13 mg × h/L; 6.55 ± 1.25 h) dogs. The relative oral bioavailability of TAL for the fasted group was low (36.92% ± 3.28%). Conclusions: Feeding affects the pharmacokinetics of oral TAL in dogs, showing a delayed, but higher absorption with different rate of elimination. These findings are of importance in clinical veterinary settings, and represent a starting point for further related studies.

  • Gastrointestinal cyst found within the oral cavity has been reported as a rare occurrence with less than 40 cases. The tongue is the preferred site with almost 60% of cysts occurring within oral cavity. The cyst usually shows an asymptomatic swelling in the floor of the mouth, about 30% of affected individuals have symptoms related to difficulties with feeding, swallowing and respiration. The histopathologic features of the cyst vary with respect to the type of epithelium lining; gastric, squamous, intestinal and respiratory epithelium. The pathogenesis is not known, but it may be related to entrapment of undifferentiated endoderm within oral cavity during early fetal development. In this article, we report a case of a gastrointestinal cyst of the tongue in a 16-month-old girl.

  • The deformities of micrognathia and glossoptosis in the newborn are frequently associated with a cleft palate, which is known as Pierre Robin sequence. Upper airway obstruction is the most serious problem in these patients. Treatment of Pierre Robin sequence includes either positional or surgical intervention. Mild cases are often managed in the prone position. However, when the patient fails to thrive due to chronic upper airway obstruction, or severe respiratory distress ensures despite positional treatment, surgical intervention is mandatory to relieve the obstruction. We experienced three infants with Pierre Robin sequence who showed a symptom triad of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and cleft palate. Intermittent cyanosis, depression of the chest, respiratory difficulty and feeding problems were also observed. To relieve severe upper airway obstruction caused by micrognathia and glossoptosis, we simultaneously performed modified tongue lip adhesion (TLA) and a subperiosteal release of the floor of the mouth (SRFM). Respiratory and feeding difficulties were relieved, the tongue positioned anteriorly, body weight increased, and mandibular growth improved. Simultaneous TLA and SRFM may constitute a simple and reliable method for surgical treatment of airway obstruction in patients with Pierre Robin sequence.

  • Objective : This study aims to compare children with and without pervasive developmental disorders in terms of the sensory processing ability and behavioral characteristic of oral feeding. This study also aims to identify correlation between sensory processing and characteristics of eating. Methods : The subjects of this research were normal children and those who have diagnosis of a pervasive developmental disorder, aged from 4 to 6. The research instruments were composed of Short Sensory Profile (SSP), Brief Autism Mealtime Behavior Inventory (BAMBI) and Food Items of the Sensory Checklist. Data collection was done by a professional survey institute located in 10 cities including Busan, South Korea. The survey questionnaires were distributed to 455 parents of children with and without pervasive developmental disabilities through the survey institutes. Total 263 answers were collected out of 455 questionnaires (62%) and 154 answers were used in data analysis. Out of 154 answers, 45 were for children with pervasive developmental disabilities and 109 were for normal children. Data analysis was done to identify correlations between sensory processing and characteristics of eating such as eating behavior and oral feeding. Results : 1. There was a significant difference between children with and without pervasive developmental disorders in all area of sensory processing ability (p<.05). 2. There was no difference between children with and without pervasive developmental disorders in eating behavior (p=0.881) and oral feeding (p=0.324). 3. In the group of children with a pervasive developmental disorders, it is found that there is negative correlation between sensory processing, eating behavior and oral feeding (r=-0.384, p<.01). 4. A remarkable significant correlation was found between sensory processing and eating behavior especially in taste/smell sensitivity (r=-0.6, p<.01) and auditory filtering (r=-0.326, p<.05). The correlation between sensory processing and oral feeding was most significant in under responsiveness/seeking sensation (r=-0.372, p<.05) and auditory filtering (r=-0.382, p<.05). Conclusion : This study found that there are significant correlations between sensory processing ability and some characteristics of eating behaviors for children with pervasive developmental disorders. This information can be useful to develop a program to intervene eating behavior problems of children with pervasive developmental disorders.

  • For understanding the role of infectious bursal disease virus(IBDV) to the pathogenesis of necrotic enteritis due to Clostridium perfringens(CP), all 15 day-old chickens used were divided as the following groups; A and E group with the feeding of feed contaminated with CP, B group with oral adminstration of IBDV($50{\mu}l/head$, $10^{3.4}EID_{50}$ of $P_4$ strain) and simultaneously feeding of feed contaminated with CP, C group treated with IBDV alone, F group with the feeding of feed contaminated with CP at 3 weeks after oral inoculation of IBDV, D and G group with the feeding of normal feed as controls. In mortality, B group(30%) was not a difference compared to A group(20%)(p>0.05), but in the pathological lesions the former was more severe degree than the latter. The mortality of F group(70%) was a significant difference to those of A, B or E group (20%)(p<0.01). Also, showed much F group more marked lesions than A, B or E group. In the chickens occurred the death during the study, mean concentration of CP was reached at $10^8{\sim}10^9CFU/g$ in the intestinal contents. B group showed higher mortality and more severe pathological changes than A and E group. Consequently, the results in the study were confirmed that the IBDV could be a role as a enhancing factor in pathogenesis of necrotic enteritis due to CP under the field condition.
