Development of Query Transformation Method by Cost Optimization

  • The transformation time among queries in the database management system (DBMS) is responsible for the execution time of users' queries, because a conventional DBMS does not consider the transformation cost when queries are transformed for execution. To reduce the transformation time (cost reduction) during execution, we propose an optimal query transformation method by exploring queries from a cost-based point of view. This cost-based point of view means considering the cost whenever queries are transformed for execution. Toward that end, we explore and compare set off heuristic, linear, and exhaustive cost-based transformations. Further, we describe practical methods of cost-based transformation integration and some query transformation problems. Our results show that, some cost-based transformations significantly improve query execution time. For instance, linear and heuristic transformed queries work 43% and 74% better than exhaustive queries.

An Embedded Text Index System for Mass Flash Memory (대용량 플래시 메모리를 위한 임베디드 텍스트 인덱스 시스템)

  • Flash memory has the advantages of nonvolatile, low power consumption, light weight, and high endurance. This enables the flash memory to be utilized as a storage of mobile computing device such as PMP(Portable Multimedia Player). Potable device with a mass flash memory can store various multimedia data such as video, audio, or image. Typical index systems for mobile computer are inefficient to search a form of text like lyric or title. In this paper, we propose a new text index system, named EMTEX(Embedded Text Index). EMTEX has the following salient features. First, it uses a compression algorithm for embedded system. Second, if a new insert or delete operation is executed on the base table. EMTEX updates the text index immediately. Third, EMTEX considers the characteristics of flash memory to design insert, delete, and rebuild operations on the text index. Finally, EMTEX is executed as an upper layer of DBMS. Therefore, it is independent of the underlying DBMS. We evaluate the performance of EMTEX. The Experiment results show that EMTEX can outperform th conventional index systems such as Oracle Text and FT3.

  • XML is rapidly becoming the standard for data representation and exchange, and XML documents are being adopted in various applications. Since the late 1990s, some native XML database management systems(DBMSs) have been developed. More recently, commercial relational DBMS vendors try to incorporate full functionalities of XML into their products, such as Oracle, MS SQL and IBM DB2. In this paper, we implement a well-known RDBMS-based XML data storage and indexing technique, called XPath Accelerator, and tune it in an industry-leading RDBMS. Our contributions are two-folds: 1) an in-depth implementation of the XPath Accelerator technique and 2) its tuning to exploit the advanced query processing techniques of an RDBMS.

  • As the research work about XML based on the development of Internet and according to the information exchange standard is being carried out, the need of discovering new methods to store XML documents and manage them efficiently according to the frequency of large-capacity XML documents increases. Consequently, as a kind of back-end database system, XML storage systems such as RDBMS, OODBMS and Native XML DBMS etc. are coming forth in order to save XML documents. It is an urgent task to make comparisons among usage expense, function comparison storage, inquiry, and manage dimension for each DBMS. This paper makes an analysis and comparison of DTD-independent XML document access methods in RDBMS, OODBMS and Native XML DBMS for XML storage and management. After analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each access method and comparing the function of typical commerce DBMS such as Oracle 8i, eXcelon and Tamino for finding the possibility of military applications, an another appropriate method to save XML documents is proposed as to find an implementation approach to save structural XML documents.

The Development of a Spatial Middleware for Efficient Retrieval of Mass Spatial Data (대용량 공간 데이타의 효율적인 검색을 위한 공간 미들웨어의 개발)

  • Recently, because of the need to wide-area spatial data for spatlal analysis and military purpose, there are increasing demand for the efficient retrieval of mass spatial data in Geographic Information System(GIS) fields. Oracle Spatial and ESRI ArcSDE, that are GIS Software, are to manage mass spatial data stably and to support various services but they are inefficient to retrieve mass spatial data because of the complexity of their spatial data models and spatial operations. Therefore, in this paper, we developed a spatial middleware that can retrieve mass spatial data efficiently. The spatial middleware used Oracle which is a representative commercial DBMS as a repository for the stable management of spatial data and utilized OCCI(Oracle C++ Call Interface) for the efficient access of mass spatial data in Oracle. In addition, various spatial operating methods and the Array Fetch method were used in the spatial middleware to perform efficient spatial operations and retrieval of mass spatial data in Oracle, respectively. Finally, by comparing the spatial middleware with Oracle Spatial and ESRI ArcSDE through the performance evaluation, we proved its excellent retrieval and storage performance of mass spatial data.

  • Recently, Internet services are rapidly spreading all over the world. Internet will have a great influence on financial market and banking industry. Customers will obtain full banking services over Internet. Thus, Internet banking is an unavoidable choice to strengthen the competitive edge of banks. This paper designs and develops an application for Internet banking services in the existing banks. The implementation of Internet banking requires the construction of website, web pages and links to other related information. Using Oracle DBMS(Database Management System), Oracle Application Server, PL/SQL(Procedural Language/SQL), Java Applet, and Java Script, a prototype for Internet banking is implemented.

  • A Process Quality Information System (PQIS) for the CIM environment is presented. The system includes three subsystems which are qualify control, statistical analysis, and information management. As part of CIM, the PQIS was designed by using the ICAM Definition(IDEF) methodology. The Oracle-CDE was utilized as a graphic development tool which made the system more user friendly. PQIS operates on IBM or compatible PCs under MS-Windows and Oracle DBMS. The methodology developed in this research provides a foundation for the application of CIM subsystems.

  • In this paper, we propose an architecture of the DNC system for Shop Floor Control/Point of Production(SFC/POP). The DNC system to be presented this paper retrieves line-up sheets which include the drawing information, making a index database for line-up sheets, NC programs and tool adjustment data. And it is interface with a raw material, jig and tool information. Also, the DNC system transmits operation information to real workers rapidly, and supports realtime monitoring by collecting the state information of machines directly. In the analysis and design phases, this paper models realtime events using the state transition diagrams. In the implementation phase, we use the ORACLE DBMS(Database Management System) as the DBMS and Developer 2000 and Microsoft Visual C++ 5.0 as the programming tools.

  • With the development of CNC(Computer Numerical Control) and communication technology, the connotation and functions of Distributed Numerical Control have been greatly enlarged. In this study, we develop and implement a Distributed Numerical Control system that has real time and multi-tasking operation capability for the machining cell with various NC(Numerical Control) and CNC machines. With the consideration of economy, generalization and extension, this system is interfaced with Shop Floor Control System, Machine Control System and Tool Preparation System using advanced networking method. In the implementation phase, we use the ORACLE DBMS (Database Management System) as the DBMS and Microsoft Visual C++ as the programming tools.

  • 인터넷 기반의 정보교환 표준으로 급부상한 XML에 의해 대용량의 XML 문서를 효율적으로 저장하고 관리하는 방법이 필요하게 되었다. 이에 따라 XML 문서를 저장하기 위한 백엔드 데이터베이스 시스템으로 RDBMS와 ORDBMS 그리고 Native XML 등의 XML 저장 시스템이 출현하였다. 그러므로 이들에 대해 유형별로 용도와 비용대비 성능에 관한 저장, 조회 및 관리 차원의 비교는 시급하다. 본 논문에서는 XML 문서를 저장, 관리하기 위한 RDBMS와 Native XML 데이터베이스에서의 XML 문서 접근방법에 대하여 비교 분석한다. 유형별 각 시스템 접근방식의 장단점을 비교 한 후 효과적인 XML 문서의 저장 기능 개발을 위해 상용 DBMS의 유형을 대표하는 Oracle 8i와 Tamino를 선택하여 성능을 비교한다.
