In this study, 3-dimensional ripple structured anion (chlorine) doped ZnO thin film are developed, and used as electron transporting layer (ETL) in inverted organic photovoltaics (I-OPVs). Optical and electrical characteristics of ZnO:Cl ETL are investigated depending on the chlorine doping ratio and optimized for high efficient I-OPV. It is found that optimized chlorine doping on ZnO ETL enhances the ability of charge transport by modifying the band edge position and carrier mobility without decreasing the optical transmittance in the visible region, results in improvement of power conversion efficiency of I-OPV. The highest performance of 8.79 % is achieved for I-OPV with ZnO:Cl-x (x=0.5wt%), enhanced ~10% compared to that of ZnO:Cl-x (x=0wt%).
We developed a highly efficient organic photovoltaic (OPV) cell with a poly[4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-(4-(2-ethylhexyl)-3-fluorothieno[3,4-b]thiophene-)-2-carboxylate-2-6-diyl)]:[6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester active layer for harvesting lower-intensity indoor light energy to power various self-powered sensor systems that require power in the microwatt range. In order to achieve higher power conversion efficiency (PCE), we first optimized the thickness of the active layer of the OPV cell through optical simulations. Next, we fabricated an OPV cell with optimized active layer thickness. The device exhibited a PCE of 12.23%, open circuit voltage of 0.66 V, short-circuit current density of 97.7 ㎂/cm2, and fill factor of 60.53%. Furthermore, the device showed a maximum power density of 45 ㎼/cm2, which is suitable for powering a low-power (microwatt range) sensor system.

In this tutorial session, the field of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells based on small molecular weight materials will be presented. The previously reported studies on the fabrication, structure, and property of the cells as well as the molecular materials are included. Especially, the factors hampering further enhancement in the power conversion efficiency of the cells such as exciton recombination, light absorption and interfacial morphology between electron donor and acceptor layer will be discussed in detail. The recent progress in our group will also be presented. It includes typical materials and cell fabrication techniques we used as well as the studies on improving the light absorption in the electron donor layer and reducing the extinction of excitons formed by introducing the nanostructured interface between organic layers.
Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have attracted significant interest in an interdisciplinary research field for the decades as a next-generation photovoltaic device due to their unique advantages. One of requirements for OPVs having high power conversion efficiency is the favorable energy level alignment between the electrode/organic and organic/organic interfaces to manage the exciton dissociation and improve the charge transport. In this review, strategies to enhance the OPV performance by controlling the energy level alignment are discussed. The insertion of an exciton blocking layer leads to the efficient dissociation of photogenerated excitons at the donor/acceptor interface enhancing the short-circuit current density. The choice of a donor having a high ionization energy and an acceptor having a low electron affinity increases the open-circuit voltage. The insertion of an appropriate work function modifier which reduces the charge injection barrier removes the S-kink in current density-voltage characteristics of OPVs and improves the fill factor. This review would give a valuable guide to design the efficient OPV structure.

Organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices have attracted attention due to their high efficiency and simple manufacturing process. Applying an overlayer to OPV devices is one way to improve their performance because it can improve charge extraction and suppress vertical phase separation. In addition, dichloromethane (DCM) was used as an orthogonal solvent to minimize the effect on other layers. However, an coating problems due to the use of DCM were found, which affects surface morphology as rough or peeling. Additional research efforts are needed to solve these problems, and optimal results are expected to be obtained by utilizing various buffer layers or selective organic solvents.
PEMS (printed electro-mechanical system) is fabricated by means of various printing technologies. Passive and active components in 2D or 3D such as conducting lines, resistors, capacitors, inductors and TFT, which are printed with functional materials, can be classified in this category. And the issue of PEMS is applied to a R2R process in the manufacturing process. In many electro-devices, the vacuum process is used as the manufacturing process. However, the vacuum process has a problem: it is difficult to apply toa continuous process as a R2R printing process. In this paper, we propose an ESD (electro static deposition) printing process has been used to apply an organic solar cell of thin film forming. ESD is a method of liquid atomization by electrical forces, anelectrostatic atomizer sprays micro-drops from the solution injected into the capillary, with electrostatic force generated by electric potential of about tens of kV. ESD method is usable in the thin film coating process of organic materials and continuous process as a R2R manufacturing process. Therefore, we experiment the thin films forming of PEDOT:PSS layer and Active layer which consist of the P3HT:PCBM. The result of experiment, organic solar cell using ESD thin film coated method is occurred efficiency of about 1.4%. Also, the case of only used to ESD method in the active layer coating is occurred efficiency of about 1.86% as the applying a spin coating in the PEDOT:PSS layer. We can expect that ESD method is possible for continuous process to manufacture in the organic solar cell or OLED device.

Organic photovoltaic (OPV)cells have attracted considerable attention due to their potential for flexible, lightweight, and low-cost application of solar energy conversion. Since a 1% power conversion efficiency (PCE) OPV based on a single donor-acceptor heterojunction was reported by Tang, the PCE has steadily improved around 5%. It is well known that a high parallel (shunt)resistance and a low series resistance are required simultaneously to achieve ideal photovoltaic devices. The device should be free of leakage current through the device to maximize the parallel resistance. The series resistance is attributed to the ohmic loss in the whole device, which includes the bulk resistance and the contact resistance. The bulk resistance originated from the bulk resistance of the organic layer and the electrodes; the contact resistance comes from the interface between the electrodes and the active layer. Furthermore, it has been reported that the bulk resistance of the indium tin oxide (ITO) of the devices dominates the series resistance of OPVs for a large area more than $0.01\;cm^2$. Therefore, in practical application, the large area of ITO may significantly reduce the device performance. In this work, we investigated the effect of sheet resistance ($R_{sh}$) of deposited ITO on the performance of OPVs. It was found that the device performance of polythiophene-fullerene (P3HT:PCBM) bulk heterojunction OPVs was critically dependent on Rsh of the ITO electrode. With decreasing $R_{sh}$ of the ITO from 39 to $8.5\;{\Omega}/{\square}$, the fill factor (FF) of OPVs was dramatically improved from 0.407 to 0.580, resulting in improvement of PCE from $1.63{\pm}0.2$ to $2.5{\pm}0.1%$ underan AM1.5 simulated solar intensity of $100\;mW/cm^2$.

Silver nanowire (AgNW) is a material that is increasingly being used for transparent electrodes, as a substitute for indium tin oxide (ITO), owing to its flexibility, high transmittance to sheet resistance ratio, and simple production process. This study involves manufacturing large-area organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) deposited on AgNW electrodes. We compared the efficiency of OPVs with ITO and AgNW electrodes. The results verified that an OPV with an AgNW electrode performed better than that with an ITO electrode. Furthermore, by using the knife coating method, we successfully fabricated large-area OPVs without the loss of efficiency. Use of AgNW instead of ITO demonstrated that an OPV could be produced on various substrates by the solution process method, dropping the productions costs significantly. Additionally, by using the knife coating method, the process time and amount of wasted solution are reduced. This leads to an increase in the efficient fabrication of the OPV.

This work was initiated to develope a recombinant oral poliovaccine (OPV), which is highly advanced in safety (minimizing VAPP) by introducing Type 2,3 poliovirus epitopes into our RPS-Vax system. We have introduced several potential vaccine epitopes of poliovirus Type 2, and 3 into RPS-Vax system, resulting in production of recombinant polioviruses. Any of these chimeric viruses, however, were not detected for their foreign gene expression by serotype-specific mouse antiserum. We have designed several folding units to stabilize the introduced vaccine protein and attached short epitope-concatamer or epitope-multimer to them, followed by production of chimeric viruses. Only those who have an HIV-1 Tat-mediated folding unit were nicely detected for the introduced foreign proteins by anti-Tat antiserum and type-specific peptide-induced antisera. Nevertheless, introduced epitopes were not detected in Western blot experiment with each serotype-specific antiserum. None of the mice inoculated with these chimeric viruses showed preventative immunity when challenged with Lansing and Leon wildtype 2 and 3 poliovirus, and the antiserum did not show neutralizing capacity in vitro. Conformational epitope covering B/C loop region of type 2 and 3 were newly designed by computer modeling, and introduced into the RPS-Vax vector system, followed by production of chimeric viruses. Introduced epitope regions were nicely detected by anti-Tag23 mAb or peptide antibody, but still not detected by poliovirus antiserum. Nevertheless, neutralizing antibody was detected in the Tg-PVR mice even when inoculated once with these chimeric viruses. Also, the immunized mice showed perfect preventative immunity against the wild Type poliovirus Lancing or Leon. When boosted appropriately, those chimeric virus-inoculated Tg-PVR mice produced equivalent amounts of neutralizing antibody to those in Sabin 2/3-immunized mice. These data strongly suggest that our recombinant poliovirus (RPS-PV2 and RPS-PV3) can be used as a safe and effective rec-OPV instead of any preexisting poliovaccine.
