  • The effect of Post Weld Heat Treatment(PWHT) of RE36 steel for marine structure was investigated with parameters such as micro-vickers hardness, corrosion potential and corrosion current density of weld metal(WM), base metal(BM) and heat affected zone(HAZ), and both Al alloy anode generating current and Al alloy anode weight loss quantity etc. Hardness of post-weld heat treated BM, WM and HAZ is lower than that of As-welded condition of each region. However, hardness of HAZ was the highest among those three parts regardless of PWHT temperature and corrosion potential of WM was the highest among those three parts without regard to temperature and corrosion potential of WM was the highest among those three parts without regard to PWHT temperature. The amplitude of corrosion potential difference of each other three parts at PWHT temperature $550^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$ are smaller than that of three parts by As-welded condition and corrosion current density obtained by PWHT was also smaller than that of As-welded condition. Eventually, it was known that corrosion resistance was increased by PWHT. However both Al anode generating current and anode weight loss quantity were also decreased by PWHT compare to As-welded condition when RE36 steel is cathodically protected by Al anode. Therefore, it is suggested that the optimum PWHT temperature with increasing corrosion resistance and cathodic protection effect is $550^{\circ}C$.

  • The overall aim of this paper is to determine coupling loss factor of welding point between shell and cylinder using loss factor and structural loss factor. For this purpose, two kinds of loss factor were adopted. One is loss factor of each sub structure, another is structural loss factor based on the complex welded or assembled structure. Using these two parameters, it ispossible to derive the coupling loss factor which represent characteristic condition of SEA theory. Coupling loss factor of conjunction in complex structure was expressed as power balance equation. The derived equation for a coupling loss factor has been simplified on the assumption of one way (uni-directional) power flow between multi-sub structures. Using these conditions, it is possible to find the equation of coupling loss factor expressed as above two loss factors. To check the effectiveness of above equation, this paper used two-stage application. The first approach was application between simple cylinder and shell. The next was adopted rotary compressor. Rotary compressor has three main conjunctions between shell and internal vibration part. This equation was applied to find out the optimum welding point with respect to reduce the noise propagation. It shows the effective tool to evaluate the coupling loss factor in complex structure

  • 316L stainless steel welding tube was electrolytically polished and the inner surface characteristics of the tube were tested. Electro-polishing variables such as current, voltage, concentration of electrolyte and electropolishing time were changed to seek for optimum condition. These makes a optimum conditions for the electro-polishing as 4000 A, 9 V, 1.7 specific gravity of electrolyte, and 30 minute of electro-polishing time. It makes the surface roughness as Ra < $0.25{\mu}m$. XPS test resulted as the ratio of CrO/FeO equals or more to 3/1. AES test resulted as the thickness of CrO film of $38{\AA}$. DTA test resulted as the tube did not react with $N_2,\;H_2\;and\;O_2$ gas below 1073K. As summarize above results, the electro- polished 316L stainless steel welding tube satisfied the conditions to apply as a pipeline for semi- conductor production facility and clean room.

  • In this paper, friction welded joints were constructed to investigate the mechanical properties of welded 15-mm diameter solid bars of Mg alloy (AZ31B). The main friction welding parameters were selected to endure reliable quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, impact energy test, Vickers hardness surveys of the bonds in the area and heat affected zone (HAZ), and macrostructure investigations. The study reached the following conclusions. The tensile strength of the friction welded materials (271 MPa) was increased to about 100% of the AZ31B base metal (274 MPa) under the condition of a heating time of 1 s. The metal loss increased lineally with an increase in the heating time. The following optimal friction welding conditions were determined: rotating speed (n) = 2000 rpm, heating pressure (HP) = 35 MPa, upsetting pressure (UP) = 70 MPa, heating time (HT) = 1 s, and upsetting time (UT) = 5 s, for a metal loss (Mo) of 10.2 mm. The hardness distribution of the base metal (BM) showed HV55. All of the BM parts showed levels of hardness that were approximately similar to friction welded materials. The weld interface of the friction welded parts was strongly mixed, which showed a well-combined structure of macro-particles without particle growth or any defects. In addition, an acoustic emission (AE) technique was applied to derive the optimum condition for friction welding the Mg alloy nondestructively. The AE count and energy parameters were useful for evaluating the relationship between the tensile strength and AE parameters based on the friction welding conditions.

  • Laser welding with AZ61 filler wire was carried out to improve formability though reduction of porosity and formation of under fill bead. Optimum welding condition and mechanical properties of butt joint for $400{\times}500{\times}1.3mm$ magnesium sheets were studied. Optimal welding conditions of laser power, welding speed, and defocusing length are 1000W, 3m/min, and 2mm, respectively. Results of tensile test indicated that both tensile strength and elongation of specimens welded with filler wire were improved at room temperature because of reduction of porosity and under-filled bead formation in addition to the precipitation hardening and microstructure refinement by Al-Mn and Mg-Al-Zn precipitates. At elevated temperature of $200{\sim}350^{\circ}C$, fracture location of tensile specimen was shifted from weld metal to base metal, indicating less softening of weld metal than base metal.

  • Ships, structures on the ocean, bridges, and other structures tend to be large by the development of industry. These ultra thick plate were welded with large heat input, which causes welding stresses, deformation and buckling, so it has to be considered the weld design, safety, reliability. The welded residual stresses were produced and redistributed due to the effect of large heat input. The mechanical phenomenon has not been surely identified yet. In spite of the lack of the study on the box column, there are various types of steel frame such as I type, H type, + type and $\bigcirc$ type, used in high story building. In this study, we performed computer simulation with two dimensional heat conduction and plane deformation thermal elasto-plastic finite element computer program as changing the plate thickness to 100mm, 150mm and groove angle to $60^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ of corner joint in box column. And then, to identify mechanical phenomenon such as the phenomenon of thermal distribution, welding residual stresses and deformation and to decide optimum groove angle and welding condition. The main conclusion can be summarized as follows: 1) Since the groove angle has became cooling down rapidly due to its smaller value, the temperature slope was steeped somewhat. 2) The tensile stress within the welding direction stresses was somewhat decreased at the weld metal and HAZ, increasing of the groove angle. 3) The local stress concentration of the groove angle $60^{\circ}C$ was appeared smaller than groove angle $30^{\circ}$.

  • Recently, Tailor Welded Blanks(TWB) is widely used in automotive industry since the transformation characteristics of its material can be changed. However, clearance between welding surface becomes the important factor which affect the quality of the laser weld, causing difficulties in preparing the sheet. The objective of this paper is to systematically evaluate the effects of previously presented fracture criterion and shearing condition on precise mechanical shearing simulation result. Also predict the optimum shearing condition, effect of shearing condition such as clearance and punch radius on the shear plane shape was evaluated.

  • This study was conducted by L9 orthogonal array to obtain optimum spray parameters for This study was conducted by L9 orthogonal array to obtain optimum spray parameters for $Cr_3C_2 - 7wt%$(80wt%Ni-20wt%Cr) coating powder. The factors were hydrogen flow rate, oxygen flow rate, gun-to-work distance, powder feed rate. And evaluation methods for the coating were surface roughness, oxygen concentration, micro-hardness, pore size and distribution, low angle ($30^{\circ}$) erosion rate, and microstructure of coating. The optimum HVOF spray conditions were proved as follows : hydroen flow rate ; 681 SLPM, oxygen flow rate ; 215 SLPM $H^2/O^2 ratio= 3.16), gun-to-work distance ; 22cm, powder feed rate; 25g/min. The hardness (Hv300) was 1147 and the erosion rate ($30^{\circ}$degree) was $3.16\times10^{-4}$g/g. It is believed that the optimized spray conditions can be improved the wear-resistance and anti-erosion characteristics of the coating.

  • The full automation welding has not yet been achieved partly because the mathematical model for the process parameters of a given welding task is not fully understood and quantified. Several mathematical models to control welding quality, productivity, microstructure and weld properties in arc welding processes have been studied. However, it is not an easy task to apply them to the various practical situations because the relationship between the process parameters and the bead geometry is non-linear and also they are usually dependent on the specific experimental results. Practically, it is difficult, but important to know how to establish a mathematical model that can predict the result of the actual welding process and how to select the optimum welding condition under a certain constraint. In this paper, an attempt has been made to develop an neural network model to predict the weld top-bead height as a function of key process parameters in the welding. and to compare the developed models using three different training algorithms in order to select an adequate neural network model for prediction of top-bead height.
