  • For the high reflectance under the ambient light condition, a highly efficient diffractive reflector has been proposed, based on a micro grating structure.[1] This reflector was designed to show highly concentrated distribution of the reflected light to the normal direction of the reflector under specific incident conditions of the light. In order to apply a diffractive reflector to a reflective liquid crystal display, the coupling between the viewing angle characteristics of a liquid crystal (LC) cell and the reflective distribution of the reflector should be considered. Under the optimum configuration confirmed through the analysis of the coupling between a LC cell and a reflector, a reflective vertical alignment (VA) cell with a diffractive reflector shows contrast ratio and brightness much higher than that with a conventional bumpy reflector.

  • In this paper, a method for determining the boundary conditions which derived from the random obstacles on the curves was presented. A simple computer program using this method is also developed. This determination method and program can be used for a good engineering tool in optimal curve design and an Radius-transition curve length $(R-L_t)$ combination within the permissible zone can be improved without any increased costs.

  • This paper addresses a face verification method using the nonlinear composite filter. This face verification process can be simple and speedy because it does not require any reprocessing such as face detection, alignment or cropping. The optimum nonlinear composite filter is derived by minimizing the output energy due to additive noise and an input scene while maintaining the outputs of training images constant. The filter is equipped with the discrimination capability and the robustness to additive noise by minimizing the outputs of the input scene and the noise, respectively. We build the nonlinear composite filter with two training images and compare the filter with the conventional synthetic discriminant function (SDF) filter. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves are presented as a metric for the performance evaluation. According to the experimental results the optimum nonlinear composite filter is shown to be a robust scheme for face verification in low resolution and noise environments.

  • This paper presents a method for deposition an individual carbon nanotube (CNT). The alignment of a single CNT is very useful to perform studies related to applications in FET (Field Emitted Transistor), SET (Single Electron Transistor) and to make chemical sensor as well as bio sensors. In this study, we developed the deposition method of a CNT individualized in a solution. Using the electrokinetic method, we found the optimum conditions to assemble the nanotube and discussed about plausible explanation for the assembling mechanism. These results will be available to use for making the CNT sensor device.

  • This paper addresses an optimization for reducing a steering error of a rack-and-pinion steering linkage with a MacPherson strut independent front suspension system. The length, orientations and inner joint positions of a tie-rod are selected as design variables and Ackerman geonetry, understeer effect, minimum turn radius, wheel alignment and packaging are considered as design constraints. Nonlinear kinematic analysis of the steering system is performed for calculating the values of cost and constraints, and Augmented Lagrange Multiplier(ALM) method is used for solving the constrained optinization problem. The optimization results show that the steering error are considerably reduced while satisfying all the constraints.

  • Two antennas system which is aligned in cross direction is tested and analyzed. The main scope is focused to get an appropriated distance between the two small antennas to get a better property. The theoretical expectation and the computer simulation are executed simultaneously. The target is the folded IF antenna system printed on PCB, but the ideal dipole-antenna arrangement is also tested to verify the possibility of our implementation. And it is finally proved by experiments.

  • Various welding methods such as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding(GTAW), magnetic force electrical resistance welding and Laser Beam Welding(LBW) are now available for end cap closure of nuclear fuel rods. Even though the resistance and GTA welding processes are widely used in manufacturing commercial fuel rods, they can not be recommended for the remote seal welding of fuel rods in the hot cell Facility due to the complexity of the electrode alignment, the difficulty in replacing parts in a remote manner and the large heat input for the thin sheath. Therefore, the Nd:YAG laser system using optical fiber transmission was selected for the end cap welding of irradiation fuel rods in the hot cell. The remote laser welding apparatus in the hot cell Facility was developed using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser of 500 watt average power with an optical fiber transmission. The weldment quality such as microstructure and mechanical strength was satisfactory. The optimum conditions of laser welding for encapsulating irradiation fuel rods in the hot cell were obtained.

  • Due to key roles for the electrochemical stability and charge capacity the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) has been extensively studied in anodes of a Li-ion battery cell. There is, however, few of investigation for cathodes. Using first-principles based calculations we describe atomic-level process of the SEI layer formation at the interface of a carbonate electrolyte and $LiMn_2O_4$ spinel cathode. Furthermore, using beyond the conventional density functional theory (DFT+U) calculations we examine the work function of the cathode and frontier orbitals of the electrolyte. Based on the results we propose that proton transfer at the interface is an essential mechanism initiating the SEI layer formation in the $LiMn_2O_4$. Our results can guide a design concept for stable and high capacity Li-ion battery cell through screening an optimum electrolyte fine-tuned energy band alignment for a given cathode.

  • The surface mounting technology of 0402 electric chip part is necessary to fabricate a high density and multi-functional module, but there is a limitation of the technology, like as a bridge and self-alignement. This work estimated SMT processing factors of 0402 chip. To obtain optimum SMT process, we evaluated effects of stencil thickness, shape of hole on printability and mountability. Printability shows best results under the thickness of $80{mu}m$ with circle hole shape and 90% square hole shape. In case of chip mounting process, chip mis-alignment and bridge was occurred rarely in same conditions. In more thin stencil thickness, $50{mu}m$, strength of 1005 chip parts was poor, because of amount of printed solder was insufficient.

  • TBM penetration rate is a function of intact rock properties, rock mass conditions and TBM operational parameters. Machine rate of penetrationcan be predicted by knowledge of the ground conditions and its effects on machine performance. The variation of TBM operational parameters such as penetration rate and thrust plays an important role in its performance. This study presents the results of the analysis on the TBM penetration rates in schistose rock types present along the alignment of Golab tunnel based on the analysis of a TBM performance database established for every stroke through different schistose rock types. The results of the analysis are compared to the results of some empirical and theoretical predictive models such as NTH and QTBM. Additional analysis was performed to find the optimum thrust and revolution per minute values for different schistose rock types.
