  • The study was designed to investigate overall acceptability of rice extrudate with added ginseng flour extruded by single screw extruder. Graphic three dimension analysis on response surface regression was conducted for overall acceptability evaluated by balanced incomplete block design. Overall acceptability, which formed a saddle point, increased as moisture content increased at lower die temperature, and as moisture content decreased at higher die temperature. Critical values of each variable which indicated optimum response are 5.0% ginseng content, 17.8% moisture content and 104.6$^{\circ}C$ die temperature, and optimum inferred score of overall acceptability is 59.6 and 90. Key words: extrdate, overall acceptability, response surface regression analysis, balanced incomplete block method.

  • A three variables by three level factorial design and response surface methodology were used to determine optimum conditions for osmotic dehydration of banana. The moisture loss, solid gain, weight loss and reduction of moisture content after osmotic dehydration were increased as temperature, sugar concentration and immersion time increased. The effect of concentration was more significant than those of temperature and time on mass transfer. Color difference and titratable acidity were decreased by higher concentration. Sweetness was increased by increasing sugar concentration, temperature, immersion time during osmotic dehydration. The regression models showed a significant lack of fit (p>0.5) and were highly significant with satisfying values of R2. To optimize osmotic dehydration, based on surface response and contour plots, superimposing the individual contour plots for the response variables. the optimum conditions for this process wire 26$^{\circ}C$, 44 $^{\circ}$brix and 2 hrs for moisture content, sweetness and color difference are less than 72%, 24 obrix and 10 degree.

  • In this paper, a theoretical study has been made to reduce the residual stress and birefringence in the injection-molded parts. An optimization program has been used to minimize the residual stresses and birefringence calculated from a simulation program. The thermally induced stress has been calculated using a linear viscoelasticity model. The flow stress and birefringence has been calculated using the Leonov's viscoelasticity model. This has been applied to the injection molding of a circular disc and a plate. the optimization has been done either by changing process variables while maintaining the mold temperature constant or by varying the mold-wall temperature with time. This study shows the significant reduction in residual stress and birefringence is possible through the optimization of processing conditions.

  • The study was performed to obtain the optimum extraction conditions for crocin from gardenia fructus. Generally crocin is unstable on heat, light, acid and base solution. The extraction efficiency of crocin from gardenia depended upon the extraction time, extraction temperature, pH in the extraction bath and the optimum conditions of crocin extraction were determined as 60 minutes of extraction time, 4$0^{\circ}C$ of extraction temperature, pH 7 of extraction bath. The molar extinction coefficient of crocin was 12,515 and the color yield of purified crocin was about six times higher than that of non-purified crocin. The heat-stability at extraction temperature and lightstability in irradiation with xenon lamp for one hour of the purified crocin were higher than those of non-purified crocin. Intensity of &{\lambda}_{max}&of crocin was decreased by irradiation for one hour but UV-Vis. spectra of crocin was not changed. The colors of purified and non-purified crocin dissolved wit methanol was evaluated by means of CIE L* a* b* system.

  • Immobilization of alkaline protease was investigated by absorbing the enzyme on adsorbents. Alkaline protease was adsorbed on silica gel selected as a carrier to immobilize the enzyme. In this study, properties of the immobilized enzyme were compared with those of the soluble enzyme. 1) The optimum pH (10.0) of the enzyme was not changed, but the activity was increased at alkaline pH by immobilization. 2) The optimum temperature of the immobilized enzyme was shifted from 50$^{\circ}C$ to 45$^{\circ}C$, while the temperature-activity Profile became broader than those of the soluble enzyme. 3) The pH stability of the immobilized enzyme was significantely increased at pH 4.0, althouth it did not change in the neutral and alkaline pH region. 4) The heat stability of the enzyme was enhanced in the temperature range of 55$^{\circ}C$∼65$^{\circ}C$ by the immobilization. 5) The immobilized enzyme retained 40% of its original activity after repetitive use for 6 times. 6) The enzyme stability was greately improved for a prolonged storage at 4$^{\circ}C$.

  • A Purge & Trap Concentrator was used to analyze various volatile organic compounds(VOCs) in wat-er. The object of this study was to observe the purge efficiency of 40 VOCs in water according to the change of parameters (purge time drypurge time sample temperature) and to determine the optimum condition for VOCs using the purge & Trap concentrator interfaced with a narrow capillary connected to a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The optimum condition of purge and trap is as follows: purge time at 11min drypurge time at 5min sample temperature at 6$0^{\circ}C$ at constant purge flow (40mol/min) constant desorption flow(20ml/min) desorption temperature(2$25^{\circ}C$) and desorption time (1min) At this analytical condition the detection limits of VOCs was in the range of 0.1~0.5$\mu$g/ml and the purge efficiency of each compound was over 70%.

  • In joining alumina ceramics to metal by using Mo-Mn metallizing process the effects of metallizing thickness, temperature, and the composition of paste on the bond strength and the microstructure of joining interface were investigated. The bond strength variation in the range of metallizing temperature, 1350~155$0^{\circ}C$ was more than 150MPa above 145$0^{\circ}C$ and the optimum metallizing thickness was 30${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The optimum contents of Mn in Mo-Mn paste was 5% due to the bond strength decrease with the increase of addition. The effect of SiO2 addition in paste on bond strength was saturated around 200MPa. It was also observed that as the particle size of Mo decreased, the joinning with higher bond strength was shown in spite of low metallizing temperature.

  • Sintering behavior of 2xxx series Al alloy was investigated to obtain full densification and sound microstructure. The commercial 2xxx series Al alloy powder. AMB2712, was used as a starting powder. The mixing powder was characterized by using particle size analyzer, SEM and XRD. The optimum compacting pressure was 200 MPa, which was the starting point of the "homogeneous deformation" stage. The powder compacts were sintered at $550~630^{\circ}C$ after burn-off process at $400^{\circ}C$. Swelling phenomenon caused by transient liquid phase sintering was observed below $590^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature. At $610^{\circ}C$, sintering density was increased by effect of remained liquid phase. Further densification was not observed above $610^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it was determined that the optimum sintering temperature of AMB2712 powder was $610^{\circ}C$.}C$.

  • Investigations of temperature differences between both cnds of thermoacoustic exchanger generated by acoustic heat transport have been carried out as a function of the position of TAC(Thermo-Acoustic Couple)[1] in a 68-cm-long duct. Fixed with the electric power at 50W, measurements were compared with the theory changing the frequency from 150Hz to 300Hz with 10Hz step. The frequency-position dependent distribution of temperature difference corresponding to the Q-values was obtained with the numerical simulation. Through this distribution, the optimum position of the thermoacoustic exchanger and the optimum driving frequency can be determined.
