  • This paper presents a new design method of the 1 generation wheel bearing unit using a numerical optimization technique in order to increase bearing fatigue life. For calculating the fatigue life, a method of load analysis is studied on the automotive wheel bearing system. The design variables selected are ball size, initial contact angle, number of balls, pitch diameter, pre-load, and distance between ball centers. The method of feasible directions in ADS (Automated Design Synthesis) is utilized to automatically find the optimum design variables. To validate the design method, a computer program is developed and applied to a practical passenger car model. The optimum design results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed design method showing that the system life of the optimally designed wheel bearing unit is enhanced in comparison with that of the initial ones within the given available design space.

  • Optimum design of most structural system requires that design variables are regarded as discrete quantities. This paper presents the use of Genetic Algorithm for determining the optimum design for truss with discrete variables. Genetic Algorithm are know as heuristic search algorithms, and are effective global search methods for discrete optimization. In this paper, Elitism and the method of conferring penalty parameters in the design variables, in order to achieve improved fitness in the reproduction process, is used in the Genetic Algorithm. A 10-Bar plane truss and a 25-Bar space truss are used for discrete optimization. These structures are designed for stress and displacement constraints, but buckling is not considered. In particular, we obtain continuous solution using Genetic Algorithms for a 10-bar truss, compared with other results. The effectiveness of Genetic Algorithms for global optimization is demonstrated through two truss examples.

  • The purpose of optimum design for structures is to minimize the cost and to obtain the reasonable structural systems. This design algorithm have many objective functions including discrete variables as sections, weight, stiffness and shapes. Simulated annealing, Genetic algorithm and TABU algorithm are used search for these optimum values in the structural design. TABU algorithm is applied to many types structures to search for section and distribution optimization and compared with the results of Genetic algorithm for evaluating the efficiency of this algorithm. In this paper, the plane truss of 10 elements and the space truss of 25 element having 10 nodes, star dome and cable dome are analyzed as analytical models.

  • In spite of the widespread use of stiffend plates in ship structures, it is very difficult to analysis these directly. So, in conventional analysis of plate structures, above structures are used to be idealized as orthotropic plate or grillage structures. Lately, the development of large computers, it is able to apply the optimum techniques to structural design. In this paper, the double bottom structure of Bulk Carrier was idealized into flat grillage which is composed of intersecting beam stiffencers primarily loaded mormal to its surface. And strength analysis was carried out by using the finite element method based on displacement. And further, according to variation of floor space and double tobbon heightm, the optimum design was carrid out by using Hooke and Jeeves direct search method.

  • In this study, optimum designs of the air-bearing surface (ABS) are achieved using the reduced basis concept which can effectively reduce the number of design variables without cutting down on the design space. Even though the optimization method is easier and more applicable to handle than the trial-and-error method, its efficiency is largely dependent on the number of the design variables. Hence, the reduced basis concept is applied, by which the desired design can be defined as a linear combination of basis designs. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach by obtaining the optimum solutions of the sliders whose target flying heights are 25, 20, and 15nm.

  • The optimum design of a structure requires the determination of the economical member size and shape of the structure which satisfies the design condition and function. In this study, the process of design automatization of three-dimensional truss structure introduces the optimization technique tests its application in the design automatization, proposes its application method and applies the example structure of the parabolic antenna truss. Using the Formex Algebra of configuration function, the structure's mesh-generation is automatized. By using the program developed in this study, the input member array, member size and load condition designer can generate the input data file for the structure analysis and optimum design. This study is aimed at the development of a design automatization system that search for tile optimum value of a structure design by observing the structure's sensitivity from the modification of member array and member property.

  • In this paper, the optimum designs of air-bearing surface(ABS) are achieved effectively by using reduced basis concept which can reduce the number of design variables although the design space is distended. Generally, the optimization method is more effective than the trial and error. However, the efficiency of the former is largely dependent on the number of the design variables. In order to reduce the number of design variables and increase the efficiency, reduced basis concept is applied. We can define the desired design as a linear combination of basis designs using this concept. From this optimization method with reduced basis concept, we easily obtain the optimum designs of ABS whose target flying heights are 25, 20, 15 nm.

  • The main aim of this study is to propose an efficient meta-heuristic algorithm for topology optimization of geometrically nonlinear single layer domes by serially integration of computational advantages of firefly algorithm (FA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). During the optimization process, the optimum number of rings, the optimum height of crown and tubular section of the member groups are determined considering geometric nonlinear behaviour of the domes. In the proposed algorithm, termed as FA-PSO, in the first stage an optimization process is accomplished using FA to explore the design space then, in the second stage, a local search is performed using PSO around the best solution found by FA. The optimum designs obtained by the proposed algorithm are compared with those reported in the literature and it is demonstrated that the FA-PSO converges to better solutions spending less computational cost emphasizing on the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

  • The proposed Novel OverDriving Technology with Optimum Look-up-Table(LUT)is suggested to be a better solution to reducing the occurrence of overshooting caused by the traditional overdriving method implemented to normally liquid crystal (VA mode). Chunghwa Picture Tubes, LTD. (CPT) has successfully implement this tech into 20 inch TFTLCD TV module at the present day. The proposed technology can speed up gray-to-gray response time of LCD less than one half of frame time. On the side, Optimum LUT construction apply the compression scheme to record total actual grayscale transfer characteristics instead of applying the normal spread method such as linear / non-linear interpolation. The memory space is been reduced and the distortion of the image quality is lesser.
