  • The purpose of this study is to consider the performance and exhaust characteristics in the practical engine according to the cooling water temperature change of engine and to set up the optimum cooling condition and to obtain the optimum operating condition of thermostat in the cooling system. In order to accomplish the purpose of this study, authors have used the following procedure. 1. This study is to investigate the influence of the cooling water temperature on the engine performance and the exhaust gas, authors regulated the cooling water temperature by using the special closing circuit and measured the concentration of exhaust gas by using the exhaust gas measuring system in the exhaust pipe. 2. This study carried out the experiment by regulating the opening degree of throttle valve and engine speed in the dynamometer and by changing the cooling water temperature, at the same time kept air-fuel ratio constant and made the spark ignition time MBT(Minimum spark advance for Best Torque) 3. This study measured the cooling water temperature by using the K-type thermocouple centring around the easy over-heated parts and by installing a special closing circuit. Therefore, in this study, authors intend to examine the influence of the cooling water temperature on the engine performance, exhaust gas and present the basic materials needed in the engine design including the optimum operating time control system for the cooling water temperature.

  • In the microfluidic applications, viscous-driven pumping mechanism is a promising one since the viscous effect increases significantly as the size of device decreases, relative to the inertial effect. However, there exist a few drawbacks we have to improve such as low efficiency and small volume flow rate. In the present study, an optimum design synthesis is proposed to enhance the performance characteristics of the micropump with single rotating cylinder. First, the unstructured grid CFD method is described and validated by comparing its results to the previous results. Next, an automated optimum design synthesis tool is constructed by combining the aforementioned CFD analysis model with the mathematical optimization model. This technique is used to improve the performance characteristics of newly designed viscous-driven pump. The presented results show that the fluid dynamic optimization tool is robust and may be applied to other microfluidic device design applications.

  • Recently developed automotive components are getting lighter providing a higher fuel efficiency and performance. Following the current trend, this study proposes a structural optimization method for the lower control arm installed at the front side of a Vehicle. Lightweight design of lower control arm can be achieved through design and material technology. In this research, the shape of lower control arm was determined by applying the optimization technology and aluminum was selected as a steel-substitute material. Strength performance is the most important design requirement in the structural design of a control arm. This study considers the static strength in the optimization process. For the optimum design, the durability analysis is performed to predict its fatigue life. In this study, the kriging interpolation method is adopted to obtain the minimum weight satisfying the strength constraint. Optimum designs are obtained by the in-house program, EXCEL-Kriging. Also, based on the optimum model obtained for the static strength, the optimization of Index of Fatigue Durability is carried out to get th optimum fatigue performance.

  • In most of the studies on locally optimum detection assumes independent observations. The use of an independent observation model may cause a considerable performance degradation in detection applications of modern high data rate communication systems exhibiting dependence among interference components. In this paper, we address the detection of weak known signals in multiplicative and first order Markov additive noises. In Part 1, the test statistics of the locally optimum detectors are investigated in detail. In Part 2, the asymptotic and finite sample-size performance of several detectors are obtained and compared, confirming that the dependence among interference components need to be taken into account to maintain performance appropriately.

  • The active tuned mass damper (ATMD) is an efficient and reliable structural control system for mitigating the dynamic response of structures. The inertial force that an ATMD exerts on a structure to attenuate its otherwise large kinetic energy and undesirable vibrations and displacements is proportional to its excursion. Achieving a balance between the inertial force and excursion requires a control law or feedback mechanism. This study presents a technique for the optimum design of a sliding mode controller (SMC) as the control law for ATMD-equipped structures subjected to earthquakes. The technique includes optimizing an SMC under an artificial earthquake followed by testing its performance under real earthquakes. The SMC of a real 11-story shear building is optimized to demonstrate the technique, and its performance in mitigating the displacements of the building under benchmark near- and far-fault earthquakes is compared against that of a few other techniques (proportional-integral-derivative [PID], linear-quadratic regulator [LQR], and fuzzy logic control [FLC]). Results indicate that the optimum SMC outperforms PID and LQR and exhibits performance comparable to that of FLC in reducing displacements.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the error rate Performance of convolution coded 16 QAM signal with Optimum Threshold Detection with selective combining diversity in Rician Fading Environments. The performance of 16-QAM signal with CTD (conventional threshold detection) which employs convolution coding technique was analyzed and the performance improvement of convolution coded 16-QAM signal with OTD (optimum threshold detection) which is varied according to fading parameter "K" and AWGN in Rician Fading channel was simulated. As a result of analysis, it was shown the effect of performance improvement to overcome the environment of mobile radio data communication channel.

  • We numerically analyzed flow characteristics of the polymer melt in the screw equipment using a proper modeling and investigated design parameters which have influence on the mixing performance as the capability of the screw equipment. We considered the non-Newtonian and non-isothermal flow in a single rotor equipment to investigate the mixing performance with respect to screw dimensions as shape parameter of the single rotor equipment and screw speed as process parameter. We used Bird-Carreau-Yasuda model as a viscous model of the polymer melt and the particle tracking method to investigate the mixing performance in the screw equipment and considered four mixing performance indexes: residence time distribution, deformation rate, total strain and particle standard deviation as a new mixing performance index. We compared these indexes to determine design parameters and object function. On basis of the analysis results, we carried out the optimal design by using the response surface method and design of experiments. In conclusion, the differences of results between the optimal value and numerical analysis are about 5.0%.

  • Light weight superstructure is beneficial for bridges in remote areas and in emergency erection. In such weight sensitive applications, combination of fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) as material and box-girders as a structural system have great scope. This combination offers various options to tailor structure and its elements but this flexibility poses greater challenge in optimum design. In this paper a procedure is derived for a generalised optimum design of FRP box-girder bridges, using genetic algorithms (GA). The formulation of the optimum design problem in the form of objective function and constraints is presented. Size, configuration and topology optimization are done simultaneously. A few optimum design studies are carried out to check the performance of the developed procedure and to get trends in the optimum design which will be helpful to the new designers.

  • Purpose: Recently, renewable energy system has been widely used to reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emission of building. A photovoltaic/thermal(PVT) system is a kind of efficient energy uses, which is combined with photovoltaic module and solar thermal collector. PVT system removes heat from PV module by through thermal fluid to raise the performance efficiency of the PV system. However, though PVT system has the merit of the improved efficiency in theoretical approach, there have been few performance analysis for PVT system using the dynamic energy simulation. In this study, in order to establish the optimum design method of this system, simulation was conducted by using individual system modules. Method: For the dynamic simulation, TRNSYS17 was used and local weather data was utilized. Furthermore, the system performance in various installation condition was calculated by case studies. Result: As a result, the amount of electric generation and heat production in each case was found by the simulation. The gap of system performance was also evident according to the installation condition.
