The optimal replacement problem was investigated for a multi-state deteriorated system for which the true internal state cannot be observed directly except when the system breaks down completely. The internal state was assumed to be monitored incompletely by a monitor that gives information related to the true state of the system. The problem was formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process. The optimal procedure was found to be a monotone procedure with respect to stochastic increasing ordering of the state probability vectors under some assumptions. Limiting the optimal procedure to a monotone procedure would greatly reduce the tremendous amount of calculation time required to find the optimal procedure.

In this paper, the optimal tuning of a cross-coupled controller linked with the feedforward controller is studied to reduce contouring and tracking errors of a bi-axial servomechanisms by using the previously developed integrated tuning method. The CCC system for an arbitrary curve, which is combined with the feedforward controller, is formulated by a state-space based on a series of linear motion trajectories. An optimal tuning problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimization problem including relevant controller parameters of the servo. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed optimal tuning procedure, linear and circular motion experiments are performed on the xy-table. Experimental results confirm that both tracking and contouring errors are significantly reduced by applying the proposed control and tuning system.
This paper proposes a new method for the discovery and design of an optimal heat exchanger network. The method is based upon the concept of pinch, a problem reduction technique and the heuristics developed in this work. It generates subproblems in a logical way and solves the subproblems by the heuristics to synthesize an optimal network structure. It is thought that the heuristics can preserve the minimum utility consumption, the minimum number of heat exchanger units, and the minimum number of stream splittings needed for a given problem. The minimum heat exchanger area for the optimal network can then be obtained by adjusting the temperatures associate with the heat exchanger in the optimal network structure. The method is applied to the problems appeared in the literatures. The results show the reductions in the number of heat exchanger units for some problems.

It is often that a large-scale linear programming(LP) problem may contain many constraints which are redundant or cause infeasibility on account of inefficient formulation or some errors in data input. Presolving or preprocessing is a series of operations which removes the underlying redundancy or detects infeasibility in the given LP problem. It is essential for the speedup of an LP system solving large-scale problems to implement presolving techniques. For the recovery of an optimal solution for the original problem from an optimal solution for the presolved problem, a special procedure, so called postsolving, must be applied. In this paper, we present how a postsolving procedure is constructed and implemented in LPABO, a interior-point based LP system. Briefly, all presolving processes are logged in a data structure in LPABO, and after the end of the solution method an optimal solution for the original problem is obtained by tracing the logs. In each stage of the postsolving procedure, the optimality of intermediate solutions is maintained. We tested our postsolving procedure on Netlib, Gondzio and Kennington LP data sets, and concluded that the computational burden of the procedure is relatively negligible compared with the total solving time.

The optimal power flow(OPF) problem was introduced by Carpentier in 1962 as a network constrained economic dispatch problem. Since then, the OPF problem has been intensively studied and widely used in power system operation and planning. In these days, OPF is becoming more and more important in the deregulation environment of power pool and there is an urgent need of faster solution technique for on-line application. To solve OPF problem, many heuristic optimization methods have been developed, such as Genetic Algorithm(GA), Evolutionary Programming(EP), Evolution Strategies(ES), and Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO). Especially, PSO algorithm is a newly proposed population based heuristic optimization algorithm which was inspired by the social behaviors of animals. However, population based heuristic optimization methods require higher computing time to find optimal point. This shortcoming is overcome by a straightforward parallel processing of PSO algorithm. The developed parallel PSO algorithm is implemented on a PC cluster system with 6 Intel Pentium IV 2GHz processors. The proposed approach has been tested on the IEEE 30-bus system. The results showed that computing time of parallelized PSO algorithm can be reduced by parallel processing without losing the quality of solution.

The saturation of the actuator impairs the response performance of the near space interceptor control system. A control system based on the properties of linear tracking system is designed for this problem. The properties are that the maximum value of the pseudo-Lyapunov function of the linear tracking control system do not present at the initial state but at the steady state, based on which the bounded stability problem is converted into linear tracking problem. The pseudo-Lyapunov function of the linear tracking system contain the input variables; the amplitude and frequency of the input variables affect the stability of the nonlinear control system. Designate expected closed-loop poles area for different input commands and obtain a controller which is function of input variables. The coupling between variables and linear matrices make the control system design problem non-convex. The non-convex problem is converted into a convex LMI according to the Shur complement lemma and iterative algorithm. Finally the simulation shows that the designed optimal control system is quick and accurate; the rationality of the presented design techniques is validated.

Reliability has been considered as a one of the major design measures in various industrial and military systems. The main objective is to suggest a mathematical programming model and a hybrid parallel genetic algorithm(HPGA) for the problem that determines the optimal component reliability to maximize the system reliability under cost constraint in this study. Reliability optimization problem has been known as a NP-hard problem and normally formulated as a mixed binary integer programming model. Component structure, reliability, and cost were computed by using HPGA and compared with the results of existing meta-heuristic such as Ant Colony Optimization(ACO), Simulated Annealing(SA), Tabu Search(TS) and Reoptimization Procedure. The global optimal solutions of each problem are obtained by using CPLEX 11.1. The results of suggested algorithm give the same or better solutions than existing algorithms, because the suggested algorithm could paratactically evolved by operating several sub-populations and improving solution through swap and 2-opt processes.
The introduction of competition in electricity markets emphasizes the importance of sufficient transmission capacities to guarantee effective power transactions. Therefore, for the economic and stable electric power system operation, transmission security constrains should be incorporated into the dispatch scheduling problem. With the intent to solve this problem, we decompose a dispatch scheduling problem into a master problem(MP) and several subproblems(SPs) using Benders decomposition. The MP solves a general optimal power flow(OPF) problem while the SPs inspect the feasibility of OPF solution under respective transmission line contingencies. If a dispatch scheduling solution given by the MP violates transmission security constraints, then additional constraints corresponding to the violations are imposed to the MP. Through this iterative process between the MP and SPs, we derive an optimal dispatch schedule incorporating the post-contingency corrective rescheduling. In addition, we consider interruptible loads as active control variables since the interruptible loads can participate as generators in competitive electricity markets. Numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

It is one of the known methods to obtain the optimal solution using the Ant Colony Optimization Algorithm for the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), which is a combination optimization problem. In this paper, we solve the TSP problem by proposing an improved new ant colony optimization algorithm that combines genetic algorithm mutations in existing ant colony optimization algorithms to solve TSP problems in many cities. The new ant colony optimization algorithm provides the opportunity to move easily fall on the issue of developing local optimum values of the existing ant colony optimization algorithm to global optimum value through a new path through mutation. The new path will update the pheromone through an ant colony optimization algorithm. The renewed new pheromone serves to derive the global optimal value from what could have fallen to the local optimal value. Experimental results show that the existing algorithms and the new algorithms are superior to those of existing algorithms in the search for optimum values of newly improved algorithms.
In this study, optimal distribution of springs which supports a cantilever beam is investigated to minimize two objective functions defined. The optimal size and location of the springs are ascertained to minimize the tip deflection of the cantilever beam. Afterwards, the optimization problem of springs is set up to minimize the tip absolute acceleration of the beam. The Fourier Transform is applied on the equation of motion and the response of the structure is defined in terms of transfer functions. By using any structural mode, the proposed method is applied to find optimal stiffness and location of springs which supports a cantilever beam. The stiffness coefficients of springs are chosen as the design variables. There is an active constraint on the sum of the stiffness coefficients and there are passive constraints on the upper and lower bounds of the stiffness coefficients. Optimality criteria are derived by using the Lagrange Multipliers. Gradient information required for solution of the optimization problem is analytically derived. Optimal designs obtained are compared with the uniform design in terms of frequency responses and time response. Numerical results show that the proposed method is considerably effective to determine optimal stiffness coefficients and locations of the springs.
