  • In this work, the parameter optimization for thermal-sprayed Al/SiC composites have been designed by $L_9(3^4)$ orthogonal array and analysis of variance(ANOVA). Al/SiC composites were fabricated by flame spray process on steel substrate. The hardness of composites were measured using micro-vickers hardness tester, and these results were analyzed by ANOVA. The ANOVA results showed that the oxygen gas flow, powder feed rate and spray distance affect on the hardness of the Al/SiC composites. From the ANOVA results, the optimal combination of the flame spray parameters could be extracted. It was considered that experimental design using orthogonal array and ANOVA was efficient to determine optimal parameter of thermal-sprayed Al/SiC composites.

  • The most difficult and time-intensive issue in the successful implementation of genetic algorithms is to find good parameter setting, one of the most popular subjects of current research in genetic algorithms. In this study, we present a new efficient experimental design method for parameter optimization in a genetic algorithm for general job shop scheduling problem using the Taguchi method. Four genetic parameters including the population size, the crossover rate, the mutation rate, and the stopping condition are treated as design factors. For the performance characteristic, makespan is adopted. The number of jobs, the number of operations required to be processed in each job, and the number of machines are considered as noise factors in generating various job shop environments. A robust design experiment with inner and outer orthogonal arrays is conducted by computer simulation, and the optimal parameter setting is presented which consists of a combination of the level of each design factor. The validity of the optimal parameter setting is investigated by comparing its SN ratios with those obtained by an experiment with full factorial designs.

  • Parameter optimization technique is applied to planning UAVs(Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) path under artificial enemy radar threats. The ground enemy radar threats are characterized in terms of RCS(Radar Cross Section) parameter which is a measure of exposure to the radar threats. Mathematical model of the RCS parameter is constructed by a simple mathematical function in the three-dimensional space. The RCS model is directly linked to the UAVs attitude angles in generating a desired trajectory by reducing the RCS parameter. The RCS parameter is explicitly included in a performance index for optimization. The resultant UAVs trajectory satisfies geometrical boundary conditions while minimizing a weighted combination of the flight time and the measure of ground radar threat expressed in RCS.

  • Two-dimensional flow analysis, a fundamental component of hydrodynamics, plays a pivotal role in numerically simulating fluid behavior in rivers and waterways. This modeling approach heavily relies on parameters such as eddy viscosity and roughness coefficient to accurately represent flow characteristics. Therefore, combination of appropriate parameters is very important to accurately simulate flow characteristics. In this study, an automation algorithm was developed and applied to find the optimal combination of parameters. Previously, when applying a two-dimensional flow analysis model, former researchers usually depend on the empirical approach, which causes many difficulties in finding optimal variable values. Using the experimental data, we tracked errors according to the combination of various parameters and applied the algorithm that can determine the optimal combination of parameters with the Python language. The automation algorithm can easily determine the most accurate combination by comparing the flow velocity error values among the two-dimensional flow analysis results among the combinations of 121 (11×11) parameters. In the perspective of utilizing automation algorithm, there is an expected high utility in promptly and straightforwardly determining the optimal combination of parameters with the smallest error.

  • There are recently some advances in solving numerically topology optimization problems for large-scaled trusses based on ground structure approach. A disadvantage of this approach is that the final design usually includes many bars, which is difficult to be produced in practice. One of efficient tools is a so-called filter scheme for the ground structure to reduce this difficulty and determine several distinct bars. In detail, this technique is valuable for practical uses because unnecessary bars are filtered out from the ground structure to obtain a well-defined structure during the topology optimization process, while it still guarantees the global equilibrium condition. This process, however, leads to a singular system of equilibrium equations. In this case, the minimization of least squares with Tikhonov regularization is adopted. In this paper, a proposed algorithm in controlling optimal Tikhonov parameter is considered in combination with the filter scheme due to its crucial role in obtaining solution to remove numerical singularity and saving computational time by using sparse matrix, which means that the discrete optimal topology solutions depend on choosing the Tikhonov parameter efficiently. Several numerical examples are investigated to demonstrate the efficiency of the filter parameter control algorithm in terms of the large-scaled optimal topology designs.

  • This study involves the estimation of optimal ranges of parameters for a linear watershed model. A well-known TANK model was chosen and a linear combination of four tanks assumed. The model was used to simulate daily streamflow for six watersheds of different sizes and by a trial-and-error approach a set of optimal parameters defined. The parameters were related to watershed sizes and land use conditions. Optimal parameters for ungaged conditions were defined from the relationships; daily streamflow simulated and compared to the observed date. The simulated results were in a general agreement with the data.

  • In this paper, a hybrid fuzzy controller using genetic algorithm based on parameter estimation mode to obtain optimal control parameter is presented. First, The control input for the system in the HFC is a convex combination of the FLC's output in transient state and PID's output in steady state by a fuzzy variable, namely, membership function of weighting coefficient. Second, genetic algorithms is presented to automatically improve the performance of hybrid fuzzy controller utilizing the conventional methods for finding PID parameters and estimation mode of scaling factor. The algorithms estimates automatically the optimal values of scaling factors, PID parameters and membership function parameters of fuzzy control rules according to the rate of change and limitation condition of control input. Computer simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of proposed hybrid fuzzy controller. ITAE, overshoot and rising time are used as a performance index of controller.

  • We address the problem about forecasting the direction of stock price movement in the Korea market. Recently, the deep neural network is popularly applied in this area of research. In deep neural network systems, proper parameter initialization reduces training time and improves the performance of the model. Therefore, in our study, we propose a novel parameter initialization technique and apply this technique for the stock price movement prediction model. Specifically, we design a framework which consists of two models: a base model and a main prediction model. The base model constructed with LSTM is trained by using the large data which is generated by a large amount of the stock data to achieve optimal parameters. The main prediction model with the same architecture as the base model uses the optimal parameter initialization. Thus, the main prediction model is trained by only using the data of the given stock. Moreover, the stock price movements can be affected by other related information in the stock market. For this reason, we conducted our research with two types of inputs. The first type is the stock features, and the second type is a combination of the stock features and the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) features. Empirical results conducted on the top five stocks in the KOSPI list in terms of market capitalization indicate that our approaches achieve better predictive accuracy and F1-score comparing to other baseline models.

  • This paper presents the methods for the modeling and parameter optimization of the electric vehicle battery. The state variables of the battery are defined, and the test methods for battery parameters are presented. The state-space equation, which consists of four state variables, and the output equation, which is a combination of to-be-determined parameters, are shown. The parameter optimization method is the key point of this study. The least square of the modeling error can be used as an initial value of the multivariable function. It is equivalent to find the minimum value of the error function to obtain optimal parameters from multivariable function. The SIMULINK model is presented, and the 10-hour full operational range test results are shown to verify the performance of the model. The modeling error for 25 degrees is approximately 1% for full operational ranges. The comments to enhance modeling accuracy are shown in the conclusion.

  • Discrimination between speech and music is important in many multimedia applications. Previously we proposed a new parameter for speech/music discrimination, the mean of minimum cepstral distances (MMCD), and it outperformed the conventional parameters. One weakness of MMCD is that its performance depends on range of candidate frames to compute the minimum cepstral distance, which requires the optimal selection of the range experimentally. In this paper, to alleviate the problem, we propose a multi-dimensional MMCD parameter which consists of multiple MMCDS with combination of different candidate frame ranges. Experimental results show that the multi-dimensional MMCD parameter yields an error rate reduction of 22.5% compared with the optimally chosen one-dimensional MMCD parameter.
