  • On this study. we improved the efficiency applying algorithm that is repeatedly using table of orthogonal array in discrete design space and filling a defect of gradient method in continuous design space. we showed optimal ply angle that maximized 1st natural frequency of CFRP laminated composite plate without a hole and with a hole by each aspect ratio. In the case of CFRP laminated composite plate without a hole, we confirmed the reliance and efficiency of algorithm in comparison with the result of optimization achievement repeatedly using statistical table of orthogonal array of experimental design and the BFGS optimal design method.

  • The layered composites have a character to change of structure stiffness with respect to the layup angles. The deformations in the fan-blades to be initially designed by considering efficiency and noise, etc., which arise due to the pressure during the fan operation, can make the fan inefficient. Thus, so as to minimize the deformations of the blades, it is needed to increase the stiffness of the blades. An investigation has been performed to develop the three dimensional layered composite shell element with the drilling degree of freedom and the optimization module for finding optimal layup angles with sensitivity analysis. And then they have been verified. In this study, the analysis model is engine cooling fan of automobile. In order to analyzes the stiffness of the composite fan blades, finite element analysis is performed. In addition, it is linked with optimal design process, and then the optimal angles that can maximize the stiffness of the blades are found. In the optimal design process, the deformations of the blades are considered as multiobjective functions, and this results minimum bending and twisting simultaneously.

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) and Titanium Alloy (Ti6Al4V) stack, extensively used in aerospace structural components are assembled by fasteners and the holes are made using drilling process. Drilling of stack in one shot is a complicated process due to dissimilarity in the material properties. It is vital to have optimal machining condition and tool geometry for better hole quality and tool life. In this study the tool wear and hole quality were analysed by experimental analysis using three modified twist drills and online tool condition monitoring using Acoustics Emission (AE) sensor. Helix angle and point angle influence tool performance and cutting force. It was found that a tool geometry (TG1) with high helix angle of $35^{\circ}$ with low point angle $130^{\circ}$ results in reduction in thrust force of 150-500 N range but the TG2 also perform almost similar to TG1, but when compared with the AErms voltage generated during drilling it was found that progressive rise in voltage in TG1 is less with respect to TG2 which can be attributed to tool life. In process wear monitoring was done using crest factor as monitoring index. AErms voltage were measured and correlated with the performance of the drills.

  • Although the net-shape molding of composites is generally recommended, molded composites frequently required cutting or grinding due to the dimensional inaccuracy for precision machine elements. During the composite machining operations such as cutting and grinding, the temperature at the grinding area may increase beyond the allowed limit due to the low thermal conductivity of composites, which might degrade the matrix of composite. Therefore, in this work, the temperature at the grinding point during surface grinding of carbon fiber epoxy composite was measured. The grinding temperature and surface roughness were also measured to investigate the surface grinding characteristics of the composited. The experiments were performed both under dry and wet grinding conditions with respect to cutting speed, feed speed, depth of cut and stacking angle. From the experimental investigation, the optimal conditions for the composite plain grinding were suggested.

  • This study investigates the influence of nano-silica and basalt fiber content, curing duration, and freeze-thaw cycles on the static and dynamic properties of soil specimens. A comprehensive series of tests, including Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), static triaxial, and dynamic triaxial tests, were conducted. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was employed to examine the microstructure of treated specimens. Results indicate that a combination of 1% fiber and 10% nano-silica yields optimal soil enhancement. The failure patterns of specimens varied significantly depending on the type of additive. Static triaxial tests revealed a notable reduction in the brittleness index (IB) with the inclusion of basalt fibers. Specimens containing 10% nano-silica and 1% fiber exhibited superior shear strength parameters and UCS. The highest cohesion and friction angle were obtained for treated specimens with 10% nano-silica and 1% fiber, 90 kPa and 37.8°, respectively. Furthermore, an increase in curing time led to a significant increase in UCS values for specimens containing nano-silica. Additionally, the addition of fiber resulted in a decrease in IB, while the addition of nano-silica led to an increase in IB. Increasing nano-silica content in stabilized specimens enhanced shear modulus while decreasing the damping ratio. Freeze-thaw cycles were found to decrease the cohesion of treated specimens based on the results of static triaxial tests. Specimens treated with 10% nano-silica and 1% fiber experienced a reduction in shear modulus and an increase in the damping ratio under freeze-thaw conditions. SEM analysis reveals dense microstructure in nano-silica stabilized specimens, enhanced adhesion of soil particles and fibers, and increased roughness on fiber surfaces.

  • For the stable operation of high speed air spindle, the low rotational inertia and high damping ratio of spindle shafts as well as high fundamental natural frequency are indispensable. Conventional steel spindles are net appropriate for very high speed operation because of their high rotational inertia and low damping ratio. In this study, a high speed spindle composed of carbon fiber epoxy composite shaft and steel flange was designed for maximum critical speed considering minimum static deflection and radial expansion due to bending load and centrifugal force during high speed relation. The stacking angle and the stacking thickness of the composite shaft and the adhesive bonding length of the 7teel flange were selected through vibrational analysis considering static and thermal loads due to temperature rise.
