  • This study is concerned with the optimum design of reinforced concrete frame structure with multi-stories and multi-bays by Limit State Design Method aimed to establish a synthetical optimal method that can simultaneously acomplish structural analysis and sectional desig. For optimum solution, the Successive Linear Programming known as effective to nonlinear optimization problem: including both multi-design variables and mulit-constrained condition was applied. The developed algorithm was applied to an actual structure and reached following results. 1)The developed algorithm was rvey effective converging to an optimal solution with 3 to 5 iteration. 2)An optimal solution was showed when bending moment redistribution factor a was 0.80. 3)The column was, regardless of story, controlled by the long column when unbraced, while in case of braced column, it is designed with 3 short column controlled by thrust and bending moment, and the supporting condition had little effect on the optimization results.

  • This paper explores the optimal design methodology for auto lever using a genetic algorithm. Component of auto lever has been designed sequentially in the industry, but this study presents the novel design method to consider the design parameters of components simultaneously. The genetic algorithm approach is described to determine a set of design parameters for auto lever. The authors have attempted to model the design problem with the objective of minimizing the angle variation of detent spring subject to constraints such as modulus of elasticity of steel, geometry of shift pipe, and stiffness of spring. This method can give the better alternative.

  • This paper presents an optimal design method of a hybrid structural control system considering multi-hazard. Unlike a typical structural control system in which one system is designed for one specific type of hazard, a simultaneous optimal design method for both active and passive control systems is proposed for the mitigation of seismic and wind induced vibration responses of structures. As a numerical example, an optimal design problem is illustrated for a hybrid mass damper(HMD) and 30 viscous dampers which are installed on a 30 story building structure. In order to solve the optimization problem, a self-adaptive Harmony Search(HS) algorithm is adopted. Harmony Search algorithm is one of the meta-heuristic evolutionary methods for the global optimization, which mimics the human player's tuning process of musical instruments. A self-adaptive, dynamic parameter adjustment algorithm is also utilized for the purpose of broad search and fast convergence. The optimization results shows that the performance and effectiveness of the proposed system is superior with respect to a reference hybrid system in which the active and passive systems are independently optimized.

  • A genetic algorithm was applied to the arc welding process as to determine the near-optimal settings of welding process parameters that produce the good weld quality. This method searches for optimal settings of welding parameters through the systematic experiments without the need for a model between the input and output variables. It has an advantage of being capable to find the optimal conditions with a fewer number of experiments rather than conventional full factorial designs. A genetic algorithm was applied to the optimization of the weld bead geometry. In the optimization problem, the input variables were wire feed rate, welding voltage, and welding speed. The output variables were the bead height bead width, and penetration. The number of levels for each input variable is 16, 16, and 8, respectively. Therefore, according to the conventional full factorial design, in order to find the optimal welding conditions,2048 experiments must be performed. The genetic algorithm, however, found the near optimal welding conditions in less than 40 experiments.

  • This paper shows the optimum design of the fluid engine mount. The design has been modified by trial and error because there is many design parameters that can be varied in order to obtain resonant and notch frequencies, and notch depth. It seems to be a great application for optimal design for the mount. Many combinations of parameters are possible to give us the desired resonant and notch frequencies, but the question is which combination provides the lowest resonant peak and notch depth\ulcorner In this study, the enhanced artificial life algorithm is applied to get the desired notch frequency of a fluid mount and minimize transmissibility at the notch frequency. The present hybrid algorithm is the synthesis of an artificial life algorithm with the random tabu (R-tabu) search method. The hybrid algorithm has some advantages, which is not only faster than the conventional artificial life algorithm, but also gives a more accurate solution. In addition, this algorithm can find all global optimum solutions. The results show that the performance of a conventional engine mount can be improved significantly compared with the optimized mount.

  • A design automation method for sequential circuits implementation by mans of PLA is discussed, and an optimal state-code assignment algorithm to minimize the PLA area is proposed. In order to design sequential circuit automatically, DASL (Design Automation Support Language) [8] which is easy to describe and powerful to synthesize, is proposed and used to describe sequential circuit, An optimal statecode assignment algorithm which considers next states and outputs simultaneously is proposed, and by adopting this algorithm to various examples, the area of PLA is reduced by 10% comparing privious methods. This system is constructed to design microinstruction, FSM, VLSI control part synthesis.

  • This paper proposes a generalized regression neural network (GRNN) based algorithm for data interpolation and design optimization of brushless dc (BLDC) motor. The procedure makes use of magnet length, stator slot opening and air gap length as design variables. Cogging torque and average torque are treated as performance indices. The optimal design necessitates mitigating the cogging torque and maximizing the average torque by varying design variables. The data set for interpolation and ensuing design optimisation using GRNN is obtained by modeling a standard BLDC motor using finite element analysis (FEA) tool MagNet 7.1.1. The performance indices of the standard motor obtained using FEA are validated with an experimental model and an analytical method. The optimal design is authenticated using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and the performance indices of the optimal design obtained using GRNN is validated using FEA. The results indicate the suitability of GRNN as an interpolation and design optimization tool for a BLDC motor.

  • This research aims to establish an optimal design method of filament wound structures. So far, most design and manufacturing of filament wound structures have been based on manufacturing experiences, and there is no established design rule. In this research, possible winding patterns considering the windability and the slippage between fiber and mandrel surface were calculated using the semi-geodesic path algorithm. In addition, finite element analyses using a commercial code, ABAQUS, were performed to predict the behavior of filament wound structures. On the basis of the semi-geodesic path algorithm and the finite element analysis method, filament wound structures were designed using the genetic algorithm.

  • In this paper, an optimal design technique for a Stewart platform has been presented considering workspace and dexterity. In the definition of a design objective function, previously suggested dexterity index was used to be maximized. In this optimal design process, the workspace can be used as design constraint when necessary. An algorithm for workspace computation has been briefly described. Finally, optimal desigm results for some example cases have been presented.
