Optimization for Removal of Nitrogen Using Non-consumable Anode Electrodes (비소모성 Anode(산화전극)을 이용한 질소 제거 최적화)

  • Research was conducted to derive the optimal operation conditions and the optimal cathode for using a DSA electrode as an anode to minimize electrode consumption during the removal of nitrogen from wastewater by the electro-chemical method. Of the various electrodes tested as cathodes, brass was determined to be the optimal electrode. It had the highest NO3-N removal rate and the lowest concentration of residual NH3-N, a by-product when Cl is present in the solution. Investigating the effect of current density found that when the initial concentration of NO3-N was 50 mg L-1, the optimal current density was 15 mA cm-2. In addition, current densities above 15 mA cm-2 did not significantly affect the NO3-N removal rate. The effect of electrolytes on removing NO3-N and minimizing NH3-N was investigated by using Na2SO4 and NaCl as electrolytes and varying the reaction times. When Na2SO4 and NaCl are mixed at a ratio of 1.0 g L-1 to 0.5 g L-1 and reacted for 90 min at a current density of 15 mA cm-2 and an initial NO3-N concentration of 50 mg L-1, the removal rate of NO3-N was about 48% and there was no residual NH3-N. On the other hand, when using only 1.5 g L-1 of NaCl as an electrolyte, the removal rate of NO3-N was the highest at about 55% and there was no residual NH3-N.

  • This study focuses on a determination of amount of Pt in the Pt/C for catalysts of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). PEMFC offer low weight and high power density and being considered for automotive and stationary power applications. The PEMFC performance is influenced by several factors, including catalysts and structure of electrode and membrane type. Catalyst of electrode is important factor for PEMFC. One of the obstacles prevent ing polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells from commercialization is the high cost of noble metals to be used as catalyst, such as platinum To effectively use these metals, they have to be will dispersed to small particles on conductive carbon supports. The optimal amount of Pt in Pt/C for cathode catalyst was investigated by using polarization curves in single cell with $H_2/O_2$ operation.

Temperature-Dependent Mn Substitution Effect on LiNiO2

  • Despite the important role of manganese (Mn) in cobalt-free, Ni-rich cathode materials, existing reports on the effects of Mn as a substitute for cobalt are not consistent. In this work, we analyzed the performance of cathodes comprised of Li(Ni1-xMnx)O2 (LNMO). Both beneficial and detrimental results occurred as a result of the Mn substitution. We found that a complex interplay of effects (Li/Ni mixing driven by magnetic frustration, grain growth suppression, and retarded lithium insertion/extraction kinetics) influenced the performance and was intimately related to calcination temperature. This indicates the importance of establishing an optimal reaction temperature for the development of high-performance LNMO.

  • Li-ion cells employ lithium transtion metal oxide as the cathode material and carbon as anode material. To manufacture Li-ion cell with higher capacity and better cycle life, the utilization of electrode materials should be as high as possible without lithium deposition onto the carbon surface during charging. A careful design of cell balance between cathode and anode materials as well as a proper charge method is a key factor to design Li-ion cell with long cycle life. In this study, we investigated the effect of cathode/anode weight ratio on the performance of $LiCoO_2/MPCF$ cell. First we evaluated the charge-discharge behaviours of half-cells. And cylindrical Li-ion cells were fabricated using graphitized MPCF anode and $LiCoO_2$ cathode. The voltage profiles for each half-cell in $LiCoO_2/MPCF$ cell were measured by using lithium metal as a reference electrode. Also, we evaluated the cyclic performance of $LiCoO_2/MPCF$ cells according to weight ratio. From the result of experiment $LiCoO_2$ cathode utilization was independent of weight ratio, but MPCF anode utilization was dependant on weight ratio. Also, the optimal weight ratio of $LiCoO_2/MPCF$ cell was found to be $2.0\~2.2$.

  • This paper describes development procedure of the four types of fuel cell's blowers: pressurized fuel blower, selective oxidation air blower, cathode air blower, and burner air blower. Diaphragm blowers having two heads are selected to maintain force balance when the rotating arms are moving by the driving motor. Dimensions of a diaphragm cavity is designed according to the optimal design procedure using numerical simulation and experimental measurement. Experimental apparatus is designed by considering the bower characteristics having low flow rate and high pressure. Test blower is operated by a diaphragm, which has suction and discharge port on the top of the blower. For analyzing the internal flow of the blower, three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis is introduced in the present study. Throughout the optimal design of the blowers, blower performance is enhanced by reducing the unbalance motion of the rotating arm and loss region in the diaphragm cavity.

  • DMFC(Direct Methanol Fuel Cell) is one of promising candidates for power sources of small mobile IT devices like notebook, cell phone, and so on. Efficient operation of fuel cell system is very important for long-sustained power supply because of limited fuel tank size. It is necessary to investigate operation characteristics of fuel cell stack for optimal control of DMFC system. The generated voltage was modeled according to various operating condition; methanol concentration, stack temperature, and load current. It is inevitable for methanol solution at anode to cross over to cathode through MEA(membrane electrode assembly), which reduces the system efficiency and increases fuel consumption. In this study, optimal operation conditions are proposed by analyzing stack performance model, cross-over phenomenon, and system efficiency.

  • This paper presents a boundary element application to determine the optimal impressed current densities at defect position on the pipe line. In this protection paint, enough current must be impressed to lower the potential distribution on the metal surface to the critical values. The optimal impressed current densities are determined in order to minimize the power supply for protection. This inverse problem was formulated by employing the boundary element method. Since the system of linear equations obtained was ill-conditioned, including singular value decomposition, conjugate gradient method were applied and the accuracies of these estimation. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the practical applicability of the proposed method.

  • The objective of a cathodic protection system (CP) is to protect the buried metallic structure against the corrosion caused by chemical reaction between the buried structure and the surrounding medium, such as soil. This paper presents a boundary element application to determine the optimal impressed current densities in a cathodic protection system. The potential within the electrolyte is described by the Laplace's equation with nonlinear boundary conditions which are enforced based on experimentally determined electrochemical polarization curves. The optimal impressed current densities are determined in order to minimize the power supply for protection. The solution is obtained by using the conjugate gradient method in which the governing equations and the protecting conditions are taken into account by the penalty function method. Numerical example are presented to demonstrate the practical applicability of the proposed method.

  • [ $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ ]cathode material for lithium secondary battery is obtained using co-precipitation method. To determine the optimal metal solution concentration value, the CSTR coprecipitation was carried out at various concentration values(1-2 mol/L). The surface morphology of coated samples was characterization by SEM(scanning electron microscope) and XRD (X-Ray Diffraction)analyses. Impedance analysis and cyclic voltammogram presented that internal resistance of the cell was dependent upon the concentration of metal solution. such data is very helpful in determining the optimal content of metal solution concentration to enhancing electrochemical property by adjusting powder size distribution and crystal structure.

  • The design of a fuel cells stack is important to get optimal output power. This study focuses on the evaluation of fuel cell system for unmaned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Low temperature proton exchange membrane (LTPEM) fuel cells are the most promising energy source for the robot applications because of their unique advantages such as high energy density, cold startup, and quick response during operation. In this paper, a 600 W open cathode LTPEM fuel cell was tested to evaluate the performance and to determine optimal operating conditions. The open cathode design reduces the overall size of the system to meet the requirement for robotic application. The cruise power requirement of 600 W was supported entirely by the fuel cell while the additional power requirements during takeoff was extended using a battery. A peak of power of 900 W is possible for 10 mins with a lithium polymer (LiPo) battery. The system was evaluated under various load cycles as well as start-stop cycles. The system response from no load to full load meets the robot platform requirement. The total weigh of the stack was 2 kg, while the overall system, including the fuel processing system and battery, was 4 kg.
