This paper presents an optimal fuzzy power system stabilizer to damp out low frequency oscillation. So far fuzzy controllers have been applied to power system stabilizing controllers due to its excellent properties on the nonlinear systems. But the design process of fuzzy logic power system stabilizer requires empirical and heuristic knowledge of human experts as well as many trial-and-errors in general. This paper presents and optimal design method of the fuzzy logic stabilizer using the genetic algorithm. Non-symmetric membership functions are optimally tuned over an evaluation function. The present inputs of fuzzy stabilizer are torque angle error and the change of torque angle error without loss of generality. The coding method used in this paper is concatenated binary mapping. Each linguistic fuzzy variable, defined as the peak of a membership function, is assigned by the mapping from a minimum value to a maximum value using eight bits. The tournament selection and the elitism are used to keep the worthy individuals in the next generation. The proposed system is applied to the one-machine infinite-bus model of a power system, and the results showed a promising possibility.
High dimensional data are frequently encountered in various fields where the number of variables is greater than the number of samples. It is usually necessary to select variables to estimate regression coefficients and avoid overfitting in high dimensional data. A penalized regression model simultaneously obtains variable selection and estimation of coefficients which makes them frequently used for high dimensional data. However, the penalized regression model also needs to select the optimal model by choosing a tuning parameter based on the model selection criterion. This study deals with the bias effect of LASSO regression for model selection criteria. We numerically describes the bias effect to the model selection criteria and apply the proposed correction to the identification of biomarkers for lung cancer based on gene expression data.

In this paper, it is suggested that the selection method of parameter of Power System Stabilizer(PSS) with robustness in low frequency oscillation for Static VAR Compensator(SVC) using a Real Variable Elitism Genetic Algorithm(RVEGA). A SVC, one of the Flexible AC Transmission System(FACTS), constructed by a fixed capacitor(FC) and a thyristor controlled reactor(TCR), is designed and implemented to improve the damping of a synchronous generator, as well as controlling the system voltage. The proposed PSS parameters are optimized using RVEGA in order to maintain optimal operation of generator under the various operating conditions. To decrease the computational time, real variable string is adopted. To verify the robustness of the proposed method, we considered the dynamic response of generator speed deviation and generator terminal voltage by applying a power fluctuation and three-phase fault at heavy load, normal load and light load. Thus, we prove the usefulness of proposed method to improve the stability of single machine-infinite bus with SVC system.

Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) is a powerful tool for addressing various practical problems and it has been extensively applied in areas of water resources. In this study, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were developed for flood forecasting at specific locations on the Han River. The Partial Mutual Information (PMI) technique was used to select input variables for ANNs that are neither over-specified nor under-specified while adequately describing the underlying input-output relationships. Historical observations including discharges at the Paldang Dam, flows from tributaries, water levels at the Paldang Bridge, Banpo Bridge, Hangang Bridge, and Junryu gauge station, and time derivatives of the observed water levels were considered as input candidates. Lagged variables from current time t to the previous five hours were assumed to be sufficient in this study. A three-layer neural network with one hidden layer was used and the neural network was optimized by selecting the optimal number of hidden neurons given the selected inputs. Given an ANN architecture, the weights and biases of the network were determined in the model training. The use of PMI-based input variable selection and optimized ANNs for different sites were proven to successfully predict water levels during flood periods.
This study analyzed the relationship between key film and a box office record success factors based on movies released in the first quarter of 2013 in Korea. An over-fitting problem can happen if there are too many explanatory variables inserted to regression model; in addition, there is a risk that the estimator is instable when there is multi-collinearity among the explanatory variables. For this reason, optimal variable selection based on high explanatory variables in box-office performance is of importance. Among the numerous ways to select variables, LASSO estimation applied by a generalized linear model has the smallest prediction error that can efficiently and quickly find variables with the highest explanatory power to box-office performance in order.
Magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) rotatory dampers are normally used for controlling the constant rotation of machines and engines. In this research, such a device is proposed to act as variable stiffness device to alleviate the rotational oscillation existing in the many engineering applications, such as motor. Under such thought, the main purpose of this work is to characterize the nonlinear torque-angular displacement/angular velocity responses of an MRF based variable stiffness device in oscillatory motion. A rotational hysteresis model, consisting of a rotatory spring, a rotatory viscous damping element and an error function-based hysteresis element, is proposed, which is capable of describing the unique dynamical characteristics of this smart device. To estimate the optimal model parameters, a modified whale optimization algorithm (MWOA) is employed on the captured experimental data of torque, angular displacement and angular velocity under various excitation conditions. In MWOA, a nonlinear algorithm parameter updating mechanism is adopted to replace the traditional linear one, enhancing the global search ability initially and the local search ability at the later stage of the algorithm evolution. Additionally, the immune operation is introduced in the whale individual selection, improving the identification accuracy of solution. Finally, the dynamic testing results are used to validate the performance of the proposed model and the effectiveness of the proposed optimization algorithm.
This study estimates the relative position between body segments using segment orientation and segment-to-joint center (S2J) vectors. In many wearable motion tracking technologies, the S2J vector is treated as a constant based on the assumption that rigid body segments are connected by a mechanical ball joint. However, human body segments are deformable non-rigid bodies, and they are connected via ligaments and tendons; therefore, the S2J vector should be determined as a time-varying vector, instead of a constant. In this regard, our previous study (2021) proposed a method for determining the time-varying S2J vector from the learning dataset using a regression method. Because that method uses a deformation-related variable to consider the deformation of S2J vectors, the optimal variable must be determined in terms of estimation accuracy by motion and segment. In this study, we investigated the effects of deformation-related variables on the estimation accuracy of the relative position. The experimental results showed that the estimation accuracy was the highest when the flexion and adduction angles of the shoulder and the flexion angles of the shoulder and elbow were selected as deformation-related variables for the sternum-to-upper arm and upper arm-to-forearm, respectively. Furthermore, the case with multiple deformation-related variables was superior by an average of 2.19 mm compared to the case with a single variable.

Objective: To construct a CT-based Fagotti scoring system by analyzing the correlations between laparoscopic findings and CT features in patients with advanced ovarian cancer. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients diagnosed with stage III/IV ovarian cancer who underwent diagnostic laparoscopy and debulking surgery between January 2010 and June 2018. Two radiologists independently reviewed preoperative CT scans and assessed ten CT features known as predictors of suboptimal cytoreduction. Correlation analysis between ten CT features and seven laparoscopic parameters based on the Fagotti scoring system was performed using Spearman's correlation. Variable selection and model construction were performed by logistic regression with the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator method using a predictive index value (PIV) ≥ 8 as an indicator of suboptimal cytoreduction. The final CT-based scoring system was internally validated using 5-fold cross-validation. Results: A total of 157 patients (median age, 56 years; range, 27-79 years) were evaluated. Among 120 (76.4%) patients with a PIV ≥ 8, 105 patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by interval debulking surgery, and the optimal cytoreduction rate was 90.5% (95 of 105). Among 37 (23.6%) patients with PIV < 8, 29 patients underwent primary debulking surgery, and the optimal cytoreduction rate was 93.1% (27 of 29). CT features showing significant correlations with PIV ≥ 8 were mesenteric involvement, gastro-transverse mesocolon-splenic space involvement, diaphragmatic involvement, and para-aortic lymphadenopathy. The area under the receiver operating curve of the final model for prediction of PIV ≥ 8 was 0.72 (95% confidence interval: 0.62-0.82). Conclusion: Central tumor burden and upper abdominal spread features on preoperative CT were identified as distinct predictive factors for high PIV on diagnostic laparoscopy. The CT-based PIV prediction model might be useful for patient stratification before cytoreduction surgery for advanced ovarian cancer.
In the paper a superior performance algorithm compared to the existing vehicle actuated controller and time fixed controller and the additional controller is described through realization of fuzzy traffic phase controller. Fuzzy theory is encouraging since the application is similar to human's decision ability that is approately coped with uncertain conditions. The paper presents that selection of the phase adequated the variable traffic conditions through the fuzzy theory algorithm and decision of optimal cycle time approated the uncertain traffic volume are predominant in traffic jam solution compared to the existing Webster's cycle time decision method and the sequential traffic phase design method and dual-ring phase operation system.
The present study is to develop the hydrologic analysis procedure for the purpose of drawing the probable isohyetal charts in Korea. In the establishment of optimal distribution types, the eleven continuous probability distribution types included the transformed variable normal distribution (Y-k method) is applied to the annual maximum rainfall depth series in each duration. The optimal selection of distribution is done by Chi-square test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test in the eui-class interval. The application of probability distribution is checked by the fitting on four durations of annual maximum rainfall data(10 min., 60 min., 6 hrs., and 24hrs.) at four meteorological stations in Korea (Seoul, In Cheon, Bu san, and Kwang Ju). The properties in hydrologic application of the considered distribution and the hydrologic characteristics of the applied rainfall data groups are investigated from the results of this study.
