When a manipulator makes contact with an object having position uncertainty, performance measures vary considerably with the control law. To achieve the optimal solution for this problem, an unique objective function that weights time and impact force is suggested and is solved with the help of variational calculus. The resulting optimal velocity profile is then modified to define a sliding mode for the impact and force control. The sliding mode control technique is used to achieve the desired performance. Sets of experiments are performed, which show superior performance compared to any existing controller.

In this paper, an optimal design technique for a Stewart platform has been presented considering workspace and dexterity. In the definition of a design objective function, previously suggested dexterity index was used to be maximized. In this optimal design process, the workspace can be used as design constraint when necessary. An algorithm for workspace computation has been briefly described. Finally, optimal desigm results for some example cases have been presented.

A systematic method to find the optimal blank shape for sheet forming is proposed by coupling the numerical simulation technique. A weighted parameter was introduced in order to simplify the multi-variable optimization problem to a single-variable problem. The proposed method has been applied to the blank design of drawing processes to obtain the near-net shape within the required error bound after forming, Excellent results have been obtained between the numerical results and the target contour shapes. Through the investigation the proposed systematic method for optimal blank design is found to be effective in the practical forming processes

This paper is concerned with the design of the optimal gains of the controller in the speed control system for the induction motor controlled by the microprocessor. The system is modelled with the discrete-time state equation, considering the time delay, for the facility of the optimization techniques. Introducing the conjugate gradient descent method, as the optimization technique, are derived the optimal gains, the gains which give the best transient characteristics. At the optimal gains obtained, the theoretcal transient responses are verified by experimental ones on a 5HP induction motor drive system.
In this paper, we present a new technique for the optimal local decomposition of convex structuring elements on a hexagonal grid, which are used as templates for morphological image processing. Each basis structuring element in a local decomposition is a local convex structuring element, which can be contained in hexagonal window centered at the origin. Generally, local decomposition of a structuring element results in great savings in the processing time for computing morphological operations. First, we define a convex structuring element on a hexagonal grid and formulate the necessary and sufficient conditions to decompose a convex structuring element into the set of basis convex structuring elements. Further, a cost function was defined to represent the amount of computation or execution time required for performing dilations on different computing environments and by different implementation methods. Then the decomposition condition and the cost function are applied to find the optimal local decomposition of convex structuring elements, which guarantees the minimal amount of computation for morphological operation. Simulation shows that optimal local decomposition results in great reduction in the amount of computation for morphological operations. Our technique is general and flexible since different cost functions could be used to achieve optimal local decomposition for different computing environments and implementation methods.
The optimal path-finding problem becomes complicated when multiple variables are simultaneously considered such as physical route length, degree of congestion, traffic capacity of intersections, number of intersections and lanes, and existence of free ways. Therefore, many researchers in various fields (management science, computer science, applied mathematics, production planning, satellite launching) attempted to solve the problem by ignoring many variables for problem simplification, by developing intelligent algorithms, or by developing high-speed hardware. In this research, an integration of expert system technique and case-based reasoning in high level with a conventional algorithms in lower level was attempted to develop an optimal path-finding system. Early application of experienced driver's knowledge and case data accumulated in case base drastically reduces number of possible combinations of optimal paths by generating promising alternatives and by eliminating non-profitable alternatives. Then, employment of a conventional optimization algorithm provides faster search mechanisms than other methods such as bidirectional algorithm and $A^*$ algorithm. The conclusion obtained from repeated laboratory experiments with real traffic data in Seoul metropolitan area shows that the integrated approach to finding optimal paths with consideration of various real world constraints provides reasonable solution in a faster way than others.
One field identified by an inverse method is one of multiple candidate solutions those are independently obtained through a specific estimation technique. While averaging of optimized fields can provide a better description of the spatial feature of an unknown field, it deteriorates the flow and transport characteristics of the optimized fields. As a result, the averaged field is not suited for modeling aquifer performances. Based on genetic algorithm, an optimal field synthesis technique is developed, which combines diversely optimized fields into a refined group of fields. Each field in the population is paired, and a sub-region of each field is exchanged by crossover operation to create a group of synthesized fields of enhanced modeling capability. The population of the fields is evolved till the synthesized fields become sufficiently similar. Applications of the optimal field synthesis to synthetic cases indicate that the objective functions of the fields assessing the modeling capabilities are further reduced after the optimal field synthesis. The identified fields from various inverse techniques may yield a range of modeling results under varied flow situations. The uncertainty is narrowed down through the optimal field synthesis and the associated modeling results converge on that of the reference field. The developed inverse modeling facilitates the construction of a reliable simulation model and hence trustworthy predictions of the future performances.

This study presents the effective stiffness-based optimal technique to control Quantitatively lateral drift for shear wall-frame structure system using sensitivity analysis. To this end, the element stiffness matrices are constituted to solve the compatibility problem of displacement degree of freedom between the frame and shear wall. Also, lateral drift constraint to introduce the approximation concept that can preserve the generality of the mathematical programming and can effectively solve the large scaled problems is established. And, the section property relationships for shear wall and frame members are considered in order to reduce the number of design variables and differentiate easily the stiffness matrices. Specifically, constant-shape assumption which is uniformly varying in size during optimal process is applied in frame structure. The thickness or length of shear wall can be changed depending on user's intent. Two types of 20 story shear wall-frame structure system are presented to illustrate the features of the stiffness-based optimal design technique.

This paper introduces an optimal design technique for a 250-watt isolation transformer using an optimization method, dynamic encoding algorithm for searches (DEAS). Although the optimal design technique for transformers dates back to 1970s and various optimization methods have been developed so far, literature concerning global optimization for transformer core design is rarely found against its importance. In this paper, core configuration of the isolation transformer whose performance is computed by complex mathematical steps is optimized with DEAS. The optimization result confirms that DEAS can be successfully employed to transformer core design for various performance specifications only by adjusting weight factors in cost function.

An optimization procedure is proposed to determine the optimal stacking sequence on the buckling of laminated composite plates with midplane symmetry under various loading conditions. Classical lamination theory is used for the determination of the critical buckling load of simply supported angle-ply laminates. Analysis is performed by the Galerkin method and Rayleigh-Ritz method. The approximate solution of buckling is replaced by the algorithms that produce generalized eigenvalue problem. Direct search technique is employed to solve the optimization problem effectively. A series of computations is carried out for plates having different aspect ratios, different load ratios and different number of lay-ups.
