  • Micro-EDM technology (or the manufacture of miniature parts is used to make a micro hole. Two electrode shaping methods, mechanical electrode grinding and WEDG technique, have been studied. In this study, an electrode shaping method by using previously machined hole is introduced in order to obtain an optimal hole-making condition. Key factors such as applied voltage, capacitance, feedrate, and hole-dimension have an influence on the fabricating error of electrode shaping, which are taper ratio of a hole, electrode form accuracy, and electrode surface. Therefore, we try to investigate the optimal fabricating of electrode shaping from various experiments. Results from experiments, it was able to minimize the electrode fabricating error as voltage increases, and also applied feedrate and capacitance decreases.

  • Substructures position is considered as design parameter to obtain optimal structural changes to raise its dynamic characteristics. In conventional SDM (structural dynamics modification) method, the layout of modifying substructures position is first fixed and at that condition the structural optimization is performed by using the substructures size and/or material property as design parameters. But in this paper as a design variable substructures global translational and rotational position is treated. For effective structural modification the eigenvalue sensitivity with respect to that design parameter is derived based on measured frequency response function. The optimal structural modification is calculated by combining eigenvalue sensitivities and eigenvalue reanalysis technique iteratively. Numerical examples are presented to the case of beam stiffener optimization to raise the natural frequency of plate.

  • In this paper, computer simulation model of handrail band including pulley-driving system is developed to calculate handrail slippage. This handrail simulation model is validated with test result within operating range and used to predict its slippage behavior with respect to variation of 4 different design parameters considering the applicability into the real handrail system. Based upon this parameter study, optimal condition for handrail slippage improvement is proposed without time-consuming and costly experiments of the real handrail system. And then performance improvement of handrail slippage complied with safety code is achieved after applying the optimal condition into the real handrail band system.

  • The tolerance approach to the sensitivity analysis in linear programming considers simultaneous and independent variations in the coefficients of the objective funciton or of the right-hand side terms and gives a region in which the coefficients and terms and gives a region in which the coefficients and terms can be changed and still the current optimal basis B for the original problem remains as an optimal basis for the perturbed problem. In this paper we describe a procedure that expands a region S obtained by the tolerance approch into a larger region R, so that more variations in the objective function coefficients or the right-hand side terms are permissible.

  • This paper presents an approximate reanalysis methods of structures based on substructuring for an effective optimization of large-scale structural systems. In most optimal design procedures the analysis of the structure must be repeated many times. In particular, one of the main obstacles in the optimization of structural systems are involved high computational cost and expended long time in the optimization of large-scale structures. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate efficiently the structural behavior of new designs using information from previous ones, without solving basic equations for successive modification in the optimal design. The proposed reanalysis procedure is combined Taylor series expansions which is a local approximation and reduced basis method which is a global approximation based on substructuring. This technique is to choose each of the terms of Taylor series expansions as the basis vector of reduced basis method in substructuring system which is one of the most effective analysis of large -scale structures. Several numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the solution process.

  • An unequal clustering method in wireless sensor networks is the technique that forms the cluster of different size. This method decreases whole energy consumption by solving the hot spot problem. In this paper, I propose a layer-based dynamic unequal clustering using the unequal clustering model. This method decreases whole energy consumption and maintain that equally using optimal cluster's number and cluster head position. I also show that proposed method is better than previous clustering method at the point of network lifetime.

  • In this paper is studied the influence of the uncertain mass distribution over the floors on the choice of the optimal parameters of a hybrid control system for tall buildings subjected to wind load. In particular, an optimization procedure is developed for the robust design of a hybrid control system that is based on an enhanced Monte Carlo simulation technique and the genetic algorithm. The large computational effort inherent in the use of a MC-based procedure is reduced by the employment of the Latin Hypercube Sampling. With reference to a tall building modeled as a multi degrees of freedom system, several numerical analyses are carried out varying the parameters influencing the floors' masses, like the coefficient of variation of the distribution and the correlation between the floors' masses. The procedure allows to obtain optimal designs of the control system that are robust with respect to the uncertainties on the distribution of the dead and live loads.

  • Optical music recognition (OMR) systems have been developed in recent years. However, chord symbols that play a role in a music sheet have been still disregarded. Therefore, we aimed to develop a proper approach to recognize these chord symbols. First, we divide the image of chord symbol into small segments in horizontal by a method based on vertical projection. Then, the optimal combination of these segments is found by using a lexicon-driven word scoring technique and a nearest neighbor classifier. The word that corresponds to the optimal combination is the result of recognition. The experiment gives an impressive result with accuracy 97.32%.

  • To load a container in a yard block onto a ship, a Transfer Crane (TC) moves to a target yard bay, then its hoist picks up a selected container and loads it onto a waiting Yard Truck (YT). An optimal routing problem of Transfer Crane is a decision problem which determines a given TC's the visiting sequence of yard-bays and the number of containers to transfer from each yard-bay. The objective is to minimize the travel time of the TC between yard-bays and setup time for the TC in a visiting yard. In this paper, we shows that the problem is NP-complete, and suggests a new formulation for it. Using the new formulation for the problem, we investigate some characteristics of solutions, a lower and upper bounds for it. Moreover, our lower and upper bound is very efficient to applying some instances suggested in a previous work.

  • In this paper, a new control strategy is proposed to improve the quality of the welding products. The conventional nonlinear power control system of spot welders is linearized using nonlinear feedback linearization technique based on differential geometry theory. An evolution strategy(ES) geometry is used to find optimal gain of PI controllers. It tries to find out the optimal control parameters by imitating the natural evolution. Some Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed variable power control system using ES algorithm has better dynamic performances than the conventional one.
