A Study on the Load Frequency Control of Power System Using an Optimal Modulation Controller (최적 변조제어기를 이용한 전력시스템의 부하주파수 제어에 관한 연구)

  • The load frequency control(LFC) of power system is one of important subjects in view of system operation and control. That is, even though the rapid load disturbances are applied to the given power system, the stable and reliable power should be supplied to the users, converging unconditionally and rapidly the frequency deviations and the tie-line power flow ones of each area into allowable boundary limits. Nonetheless of such needs, if the internal parameter perturbation and the sudden load variation are given, the unstable phenomena of power systems can be often brought out because of the large frequency deviation and the unsuppressible power line one. So, an optimal modulation controller for UC of multi-area power system is designed by a recursive algorithm that determines the state weighting matrix Q of a linear quadratic performance criterion. The optimal modulation controller is based on optimal control and can obtain the exact dynamic response of the UC of multi-area power system in the time domain. The performances of the resultant optimal modulation control, that is, the steady-state deviations of frequency and tie-line power flow and the related dynamics, were investigated and analyzed in detail by being applied to the UC of multi-area power system in the perturbations of predetermined internal parameters. Through the simulation results tried variously in this paper for disturbance of stepwise load changes, the superiorities of the proposed optimal modulation controller in robustness and stability were proved.

  • This paper presents an off-line P.I.D parameter estimation method during normal operation in power plant. The process parameters are estimated using the recursive least square method. The controller parameters are estimated on the basis of desired characteristics of the dynamic model of the closed-loop control.

  • In this paper, an engine-CVT integrated control algorithm is suggested by considering the powertrain loss, inertia torque and the CVT ratio response lag. The integrated control algorithm consists of (1) the optimal engine power calculation and (2) determining of the optimal throttle valve opening and the optimal CVT ratio. The optimal engine power is obtained by compensating the inertia torque due to the CVT ratio change and the powertrain loss that is calculated iteration procedure. In addition, an algorithm to compensate the effect of the CVT ratio response lag on the drive torque is suggested by the engine speed compensation causing the increased optimal CVT ratio. Simulation results show that the engine-CVT integrated control algorithm developed in this study makes it possible to obtain better engine operation on the optimal operating line, which results in the improved fuel economy while satisfying the driver's demand.

Optimal Dual Pricing and Passenger Safety Level for Cruise Revenue Management

  • Despite the remarkable continual growth of the world cruise industry, studies have yet to be attempted on many revenue management problems in cruise operations. This paper suggests two schemes that can be easily applied to cruise revenue management: optimal dual pricing and passenger safety level. In optimal dual pricing, a pair of higher and lower prices is applied to cabin reservation through market segmentation. This scheme can be executed with a linear price-response function for the current unreserved cabins. A cruise line could benefit from this scheme to maximize reservation revenue while attaining full occupancy. The dual pricing scheme is also devised to produce only integer demands to suit real management practices. The life boat capacity is an additional service capacity unique to the cruise industry, catering to passengers' safety. The concept of passenger safety level is defined and computed for any passenger life boat capacity of a cruise ship. It can be used to evaluate the passenger safety of a cruise ship in operation, as well as to determine the number of life boat seats required for a new cruise ship. Hypothetical examples are used to illustrate the operation of these two schemes.

  • The three-phase diode rectifier with capacitive filter is highly sensitive to line voltage unbalance. Because of its inherent nonlinear characteristics, small line voltage unbalance may cause highly unbalanced line current, causing detrimental effects on power quality. This paper presents a theoretical basis on this ′unbalance amplification effect′ and derives an analytical model of line current characteristics under unbalanced line voltage condition for various modes of operation. The results provide a basic guideline for optimal design of a three-phase diode rectifier with capacitive filter that is most commonly used for interfacing various power conversion equipments to power lines.

  • A CICC type superconducting bus-line electrically connecting a superconducting magnet to a power supply is cooled down to low temperature under the external magnetic field during operation. The thermal contraction during the cooling may be constrained by the supports which are installed to protect the bus-line from Lorenz magnetic forces. This constrained contraction causes thermal stresses in the bus-line to release thermal contraction. The minimum stress conditions in the bus-line may be optimized by controlling the supporting arrangement considering the thermal contraction and the external field. The analytical method to find optimal supports arrangement was suggested by using the beam theory, and numerical calculation using commercial code was performed to verify the suggested analytical optimization method.

  • This paper deals with the optimal operation algorithm of SVR(Step Voltage Regulator) which is located with primary feeders and proposes the optimal operation system to evaluate customer voltage. The existing algorithm of SVR adapts the constant sending voltage method, which may cause the power quality problems such as overvoltage and under voltage variations in case where the distributed generations are interconnected with the primary feeders. Therefore, this paper proposes the optimal algorithm of LDC method for SVR using least square method to obtain the optimal setting values. Also, this paper presents the optimal evaluation system based on the former algorithm. The simulation results according to the types and capacities of distributed generations shows the effectiveness.

  • This paper describes an adaptive distance relay for double-circuit line protection with mutual impedance and fault resistance. Double-circuit lines have two operating condition; both lines of a double-circuit line are in operation and one line is switched-off and both ends of the line are grounded. For optimal distance protection, the trip region is calculated, which have respect to mutual impedance and fault resistance.

  • The recent movement to deregulated and competitive electricity market reacquires new concepts against existing central dispatch in the system operation and pinning. As power systems tend to be operated more closely to their ultimate ratings, the role of SCOPF (Security Constrained Optimal Power flow) is changed and the importance for real-time security inhancement will be more increased i]1 the new and com partitive electricity market. This paper deals with the application of the SCOPF which makes possible the On-Line application. The security margin of power system truly is changed according to the conditions or configuration of power systems, therefore, the sensitivity factor reiated to the security is recalculated and the application should be updated in accordance with the state of power system. The goal of this paper is to obtain proper security through the effluent usage of the sensitivity and to apply this a1gorithm to system operation. The proposed mechanism has been tested on a sample system and the results show more secure conditions against critical contingencies.
