  • We fabricate highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber with new structure using a stack and draw method. Fabricated fiber has two big air holes, one at each side of the outside air cladding region, leading to core ellipticity during the drawing process. Birefringence of the fabricated Hi-Bi PCF is measured to be $2.29{\times}10^{-4}$ (at 1550 nm).

  • Fresnel zone plates have been widely used in many applications, such as x-ray telescopes, microfluorescence, and microimaging. To obtain an x-ray Fresnel zone plate, many fabrication methods, such as electron-beam etching, ion-beam etching and chemical etching, have been developed. Fresnel zone plates fabricated by these methods will inevitably lead to some nonideal factors, which have an impact on the focusing characteristics of the zone plate. In this paper, the influences of these nonideal factors on the focusing characteristics of the zone plate are studied systematically, by numerical simulations based on scalar diffraction theory. The influence of the thickness of a Fresnel zone plate on the absolute focusing efficiency is calculated for a given incident x-ray's wavelength. The diffraction efficiency and size of the focal spot are calculated for different incline angles of the groove. The simulations of zone plates without struts, with regular struts, and with random struts are carried out, to study the effects of struts on the focusing characteristics of a zone plate. When a Fresnel zone plate is used to focus an ultrashort x-ray pulse, the effect of zone-plate structure on the final pulse duration is also discussed.

  • Two-dimensional binary-phase diffraction gratings which can be employed to fabricate two- and three-dimensional periodic structures are designed and analyzed using rigorous coupled-wave analysis. These gratings serve as phase-masks which generate several diffracted waves from a normally incident beam and thus can produce a periodic interference pattern in space via nearfield holography. The properties of the diffracted beams can be controlled by varying the polarization and wavelength of the incident beam, surface-profile, groove depth and duty cycle of the mask. For the two-dimensional structure, optimum results can be obtained when the diffraction efficiency of the zero-order beam is minimized while that of the first-order maximized. On the other hand, when the diffraction efficiency of the zero-order is appreciable or even greater than other orders, we can obtain a variety of three-dimensional interference patterns which may be used to fabricate photonic crystals of tetragonal-body-centered and hexagonal structures in a submicron scale. scale.

  • We fabricated a vacuum ultraviolet spectre-reflectometer which consists of a deuterium light source, a vacuum monochromator, and a sample chamber and detector module. The operation was performed in the ultraviolet spectral ranges between 115 nm and 330 nm at the vacuum pressure of 3.0 ${\times}$ 10$^{-4}$ Pa. The wavelength of the vacuum monochromator was calibrated with the line spectrum of a low pressure Mercury lamp of 253.652 nm and 184.95 nm wavelengths, and its resolution was 0.012 nm, and the precision of wavelength was $\pm$ 0.03 nm. With this reflectometer and a deuterium lamp, we measured the spectral regular transmittance and reflectance of materials(MgF$_2$, CaF$_2$, BaF$_2$, SiO$_2$, Sapphire) used as optical components over the spectral range between 115 nm and 230 nm.

  • Bragg gratings were fabricated in Ge-doped silica planar lightwave circuits (PLC) for different writing conditions to study the growth characteristics. The refractive index modulation of the gratings grew in the PLC with total fluence F according to the power law $\Delta$n=A $F^{B}$. The characteristics of the PLC gratings formed for external cavity lasers match closely to those predicted by the power law. The oscillation spectra of the FP-LD with a Bragg grating grown in the PLC waveguide were also presented.d.

  • Ti-doped BSG (borosilicate glass) soot films on the silicone substrate have been deposited in the mixture of $SiCl_{4}$, TMB, $TiCL_{4}$ by flame hydrolysis deposition technique. The soot films are melted to form integrated fine glass films. We can fabricate thick films of serveral $10{\mu}m$ with deposition rate, more than $0.5{\mu}m$/min. Refractive index difference of BSG films are increased to more than 0.3% as function of the amount of Ti dopant. As a result of the process an optical waveguide which is simmilar with dimmension and refractive difference of optical fiber is produced. $BCl_{3}$ is widely used for B dopant, but we abtained the good results by the use of TMB in place of $BCl_{3}$. The melting point of silica soot glass is reduced to $1200^{\circ}C$ increasing B dopant. From FTIR analysis $B_2O_3$ content up to about lOmol% in BSG films. films.

  • In this paper, we propose a new type of a planar waveguide lens, a meniscus lens instead of a plano-convex lens used widely for the optical integrated circuits such as optical numerical processors. A plano-convex lens has a spherical aberration caused by the linear boundary. In the proposed meniscus lens, this linear boundary is replaced by a circular-boundary, and the spherical aberration is removed. To test the performance of the proposed lens, a meniscus lens is designed using Fermat principle and fabricated on the Y-cut $LiNbO_3$ substrate. First a $Ti:LiNbO_3$ planar waveguide is fabricated on the $LiNbO_3$ substrate by Ti indiffusion. Then a meniscus lens is fabricated on the planar waveguide by TIPE(Ti indiffued proton-exchange) method. A plano-convex lens is also fabricated on the same substrate to compare the spot size at the focal point. The measured spot size of the meniscus lens is reduced to 59% that of the plano-convex lens. This result shows that the proposed meniscus lens is more effective for optical integrated circuits than the plano-convex lens.

  • To investigate the diffraction property of the Bessel beam for defocus which acts CFAP (Combined Filter of Amplitude and Phase), we calculated numerically the intensity, the radius of central spot, and the optical transfer function for the number of node of the Bessel beam when an optical system has an aberration-free or a spherical aberration. The Bessel beam has larger the maximum intensity and the OTF value for an optical system with a spherical aberration than that with an aberrationfree. Particularly, the OTF value at the point of maximum intensity for $W_{40}=3\lambda$is higher for the Bessel beam than for the Clear aperture. From these results, we know that the Bessel beam has the compensating effect. The Bessel beam also has the radius of central spot having a superresolution. We will useful for the fabrication of semiconductor device and the optical recording system using these effects.ffects.

  • We investigated a LiNbO$_3$ based integrated-optic polarization controller with the Ti-indiffused waveguide along the z-axis utilizing the electro-optic effect. The device consists of a first quarter-wave (λ / 4) followed by a half-wave (λ / 2) and a second quarter-wave (λ / 4) wave-plate. We analyzed the amount of phase change and the transformation of the polarized mode as a function of the combination of wave-plates and of their applied voltages. The operation has been systematically measured utilizing a polarimeter and Poincare sphere. We confirmed that the fabricated device controls the transformations from any arbitrary input state of polarization (SOP) into any general output SOP.

  • Fabrication process of strain-induced channel waveguides in $LiNbO_3$ was developed using strain-optic effect and compressional strain due to ~1.4 $\mu\textrm{m}$ surface Mo/Pt metal film. Characterization of the channel waveguides revealed a single transverse and depth mode in both TE and TM polarizations. Measurements showed total insertion loss of 6.2 and 7.7 ㏈/cm for TM and TE polarizations. respectively. Electro-optic intensity modulators with 11 mm long electrode length and 21 $\mu\textrm{m}$ electrode gap at $\lambda$ = 1.15 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$have been produced in $LiNbO_3$ substrates using strain-induced channel waveguides. Modulation depth of 100% at $\pi$-radian voltage of 16.1V has been demonstrated. Also, 1$\times$2 on/off power splitters at $\lambda$ = 0.63 $\mu\textrm{m}$ have been produced using strain-induced channel waveguides. On/off voltage of $\pm$ 25V has been demonstrated.
