  • We deposited thin films of organic light-emitting-material $Alq_3$(alumina quinoline) on silicon and slide-glass substrates using thermal evaporation method, and measured spectra of ellipsometry angles ${\Delta}$ and ${\Psi}$ in the photon-energy range of 1.5~5.0 eV using a variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometer. The optical constants, refractive index and extinction coefficient, of $Alq_3$ were determined via the dispersion parameters extracted from the curve-fitting process based on Jellison-Modine dispersion function. The reliability of determined optical constants were verified through the comparison of measured and simulated transmittance curves and the good agreement between simulated absorption-coefficient curves and absorbance spectra measured using a spectrophotometer.

  • HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) is a hydrophilic material which is broadly used for ophthalmologic purposes and especially in the manufacture of soft contact lenses. Also, the oxygen transmissibility (Dk/t) is a very important physical characteristic in the evaluation of a material’s adequacy to be used to produce contact lenses. This study used HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), MMA (methylmethacrylate), NVP (Nvinyl-pyrrolidone), the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) for copolymerization, and measured the oxygen transmissibility of the central and peripheral areas of the manufactured general and color contact lenses using the polarographic method. The measurement showed that the decreased amount of oxygen transmissibility of the central and peripheral areas of the contact lenses measured using the polarographic method range between 40.77% and 49.13%, and the oxygen transmissibility of the color contact lens showed a larger decrease due to the effects of the coloring materials.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the changes of lens morphology and tear stability during wearing soft contact lenses (SCLs) which were kept in drying condition like dry eye or became to be dried due to heedless care. Method: SCLs having different water content, thickness or material were rehydrated after being dehydrated artificially 2 or 4 times, and estimated their diameter and radius. Furthermore, the changes of tear film break-up time (TBUT) during SCL wearing were also measured. Result: Due to the dryness, the diameter of both 70% water content SCL and 59% water content SCL decreased, but the decrement was larger in 59% water content SCL. The more 59% water content SCL was dehydrated, the more its radius changed. However, the radius of 70% water content SCL did not change by 2 times dehydration and increased greatly by 4 times dehydration. The reduction of diameter of -1.00 D SCL was greater than that of -9.00 D SCL. Moreover, the radius of -1.00 D SCL increased depending on the frequency of dehydration but that of -9.00 D SCL did not changed. The diameter and radius changes of lotrafilcon B, silicone hydrogel lens, were less than those of hilafilcon B, copolymer of HEMA and N-vinyl pyrrolidone. TBUT during wearing SCLs decreased by wearing dehydrated SCLs. Conclusion: The diameter and radius of dehydrated SCLs as well as TBUT during wearing them were changed in spite of rehydration, which would be the important cause of uncomfortable feeling when people wore dehydrated SCL. The changes of SCL morphology and TBUT differed according to the water content, lens thickness and material.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to compare and assess whether there was a relation between self-reported symptom and stereopsis in viewing an anaglyph 3D and a general 2D image. Methods: Seventy subjects (38 males, 32 females) were students ranging in age from 20 to 30 years. Subjects' symptoms were investigated by a questionnaire after viewing the 2D image and the anaglyph 3D image using red-green glasses for 30 minutes. Titmus circles and TNO stereopsis tests were performed before and after the images. A correlation between symptom and stereopsis was evaluated. Results: Both ocular and nonocular symptom in viewing 3D image were higher than those in 2D image. Titmus circles stereopsises using polarized filters were not changed before and after viewing images, but TNO stereopsises using color filters such as red-green glasses were increased after viewing 3D image. Ocular symptom and TNO stereopsis were increased after viewing 3D image, and there was a good correlation between them (r=0.605). Conclusions: Better stereopsises before viewing 3D are relatively lower ocular symptoms in viewing 3D image. But symptoms are increased in viewing anaglyph 3D image for a short-time and improvement of TNO steropsis is poorly associated with the relief of ocular symptoms. This tendency seems to be related with an adaptation to anaglyph 3D image with red-green glasses.

  • We investigated the question whether protein removing activities of enzyme cleaner - protein remover for soft contact lens - are associated with the material of soft contact lens as well as action time, temperature and pH of enzyme solution. We used a subtilisin cleaner as protein remover and estimated the protein amount remained on soft contact lens after using the subtilisin cleaner under the different conditions. The remained protein in soft contact lens was greatly decreased until treatment for 60min, but no significant differences were found from 60min to 24hr. The cleaning effect of the enzymatic treatment in the range of $15{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ was constant. however, there was a significant decline of the protein removing effect at $10^{\circ}C$ and less. The pH of the solution was also important for the efficacy of the enzymatic treatment. The activity of the enzyme cleaner was highest in pH 8.0 and significantly decreased a pH below 7. The pH dependence was found to be related to the conformational change of subtilisin. Furthermore, significant differences in the protein deposit removing efficacy of the subtilisin cleaner were found among the soft contact lens materials.

  • Ultrasonic machining technology has been developed over recent years for the manufacture of and quality-assured precision parts for several industrial application such as optics, semiconductors, aerospace, and automobile application. The past decade has seen a tremendous in the use of ceramics in structural application. The excellent thermal, chemical and wear resistance of these material can be realized because of recent improvements in the overall strength and uniformity of advanced ceramics. Ultrasonic machining, in which abrasive particles in slurry with water are presented to the work surface in the presence of an ultrasonic-vibrating tool, is process which should be of considerable interest, as its potential is not limited by the electrical or chemical characteristics of the work material, making it suitable for application to ceramics. This paper intends to further the understanding of the basic mechanism of ultrasonic machining for brittle material and ultrasonic machining of ceramics based in the fracture-mechanic concept has been analyzed.

  • Optical nonlinear property is utilized to the wave generation, generating the beam at intended wavelength, and optical computing systems. The genetic material, which is the DNA with helical structure in nano-scale, is fascinating for optics communities due to artificially controllable sequence that determines the physical and chemical property. Nonlinearity of DNA was investigated by the four wave mixing experiment, which is with two incident beams located at 1550nm and 1650nm. The four output beams including incident beams are emitted from genetic material such as 1461nm and 1763nm by nonlinear characteristic. The 1461nm beam which is generated by four wave mixing phenomena was observed by optical spectrum analyzer.

  • Purpose: The present study was conducted to compare any difference caused by pigmentation in the centrations and movement patterns on the cornea between circle and soft contact lens with identical material and parameters during lens wearing. Methods: Soft and circle contact lenses with identical material and parameters were applied to twenty eyes with normal tear volume for 3 hrs a day during a total of 5 days and then their lens centrations, the moving distances and rotations by repeat blinking were compared. Results: The lens centration beyond the fitting criteria was shown in initial wears of both soft contact lens and circle contact lens. However, the centration of soft contact lens was changed to the pupil center for being suitable to the fitting criteria with longer wearing time. On the other hand, the decentration of circle contact lens in the horizontal direction was still presented even with longer wearing time. The moving distances of soft contact lens and circle contact lens decreased with the expand of lens wearing but were not significantly different between total wearing period and daily wearing time. The rotation of circle contact lens by repeat blinking was significantly different from that of soft contact lens even when the wearing period was extended. Conclusions: We revealed that the lens centration and movement of circle contact lens on cornea were different from those of regular soft contact lens resulting in bigger difference with the expand of wearing period in the study.

  • This study was done for the preparation of macromolecular material with UV-blocking features by adding the benzophenone group that is commonly used as a UV-absorbent and $TiO_2$ which is known to be a very stable material in chemical and physical aspects. Also, we compared the level of UV absorbency of the polymer produced from polymerization with previous materials and measured basic properties such as water content, refractive index and optical transmittance of produced contact lenses. The results of the measurement showed that the refractive index and water content of the contact lens with added UV-absorbent was 1.430~1.440 and 35.0~45.0% respectively, which was similar to that of previous contact lenses. Also, for optical transmittances of each wave length, contact lenses without the UV-absorbent was 89%, 88% and 89% respectively for UV-A, UV-B and visible light, indicating that the UV transmittance is very high though contrary with cases of contact lenses with added 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzophenone and 2,4-dihydroxy-benzophenone which showed transmittances of 0% and 6% respectively for UV-A and UV-B showing a UV-blocking effect. Meanwhile, contact lenses with added $TiO_2$ showed transmittance of 6% and 51% respectively for UV-A and UV-B also showing a UV-blocking effect. The visible transmittance was 77~89% showing that it satisfies the visible transmittance required for ophthalmological materials.
