  • Optical wireless power transmission (OWPT) is a good candidate for long-distance underwater wireless power transmission. In this work we investigate the transmission efficiency of underwater OWPT, depending on the operating wavelength. We consider four operating wavelengths: infrared, red, green, and blue. We also consider the cases of pure water and sea water for the working conditions. Our results show that it is necessary to select the operating wavelength of underwater OWPT according to the transmission distance and water type of the target application.

  • Wireless charging method using a laser is considered as the most efficient method at a long distance of the wireless charging method. Combining long-range laser wireless charging technology with wireless communication technology will make it possible to use it for a variety of applications. Accordingly, this paper shows the results of research and experiments on wireless charging and wireless communication simultaneously based on a laser. This technique uses a laser as a light source for E/O(: Electric-to-Optical) conversion at the transmitter for optical wireless power transmission. In the experimental results, the optical power transmission using a 100 mW laser transmitter and a solar cells receiver showed a DC-to-DC efficiency of 1.9 %, wireless optical communication showed a transmission speed of up to 90 kbps when the transmission distance is 15 m.

  • An improved power supply for APD(Avalanche Photo Diode) with a received optical power monitoring circuit allows the received optical power increase temporary without of the degradation of the electrical signal. For the cost reduction and simple fabrication, an improved power supply has been proposed that it was designed for driving a APD as a receiving device of a wireless optical transmission system. It was demonstrated that it was possible to improve a dynamic range by compensating the temperature coefficient of the APD up to 1.0 V/$^{\circ}C$ through the power supply. Also, for an efficient transmission at the receiver end, a simple structure of a single cylindrical micro-lens configuration was used in conjunction with the laser diode to partially compensate a laser beam ellipticity. For this purpose, an astigmatism introduced by the micro-lens is utilized for the additional compensation of the beam ellipticity at the receiver end. In this paper, it is demonstrated that an efficient beam shaping is realized by using the proposed configuration consisting of the single lens attached to the laser diode.

  • The current wireless power charge technologies are based on induction coupling, magnetic resonant coupling, electromagnetic wave, etc. However, the current wireless power charge technologies has several disadvantages including short transfer range, electromagnetic interference, etc. In this paper, we investigate and demonstrate a laser wireless power charge technology. A laser source is used in the transmitter to convert from electric power to optical power and a solar cell or a photodiode is used in the receiver to convert from optical power to electric power. The laser wireless power charge technology may be the most efficient wireless power charge technology in the long distance over than 10 meters. Our experimental results show a transfer efficiency of 2.15% at the 70-m long distance with a 100 mW laser transmitter and a photodiode receiver.

  • In this paper, we show a simultaneous transmission of underwater optical wireless power transfer and underwater optical wireless communication. A laser diode is used for electric-to-optic conversion at the transmitter and a solar cell is used for optic-to-electric conversion at the receiver. We optimized the transmitter and receiver for the best performance. The laser diode is a 100-mW laser diode and showed a conversion efficiency of 18.5%. The experimental results showed a 0.33-% DC-to-DC underwater power transfer efficiency at 5 m and a data rate of 100 kbps at 1 m.

  • Diffuse wireless optical communication offers more robust optical links in terms of coverage and shadowing than line-of-sight links. However, traditional diffuse wireless infrared (IR) transceiver systems are more susceptible to multi-path distortion and great power decrease, which results in limiting high-speed performance. Multi-beam is an effective technique to compensate for multi-path distortion in a wireless infrared environment. The goal of this paper is to analyze the transmission characteristics by replacing traditional diffuse system (TDS) which contains single wide angle transmitter and single element receiver by system consisting of three-beam transmitter and non-imaging receiver (TNS) attached with compound parabolic concentrator (CPC). In the simulation, we use the recursive model developed by Barry and Kahn and build the scenario based on 10 different cases which have been listed in Table 1. Moreover, we also check the reliability of the TNS diffuse link channel by BER test on the basis of different receiver positions and room sizes. The simulation results not only show the basic transmission characteristics of TNS diffuse link, but also are references to design more efficient and reliable indoor infrared transmission systems.

  • In the atmospheric wireless optical communication system, the low power transmission can be accomplished by the high directivity of laser beam. But, the transmitted optical signal undergoes the serious influences by the atmospheric effects like absorption, scattering, and turbulence because the transmission channel is the atmospheric space. In this paper, therefore, we obtain the link equation for an atmospheric wireless optical LOS communication link under the atmospheric effects and find the repeaterless transmission length to estimate the system performance through the computer simulation. From the results of the computer simulation, we present the transmission length that is possible to transmit without a repeater at given data rates and know that data rate is decreased rapidly when the transmission length is increased slightly at given bit error rate.

  • Hybrid radio frequency/free space optical (RF/FSO) wireless mesh networks have attracted increasing attention for they can overcome the limitations of RF and FSO communications and significantly increase the throughput of wireless mesh networks (WMNs). In this article, a resource assignment optimization scheme is proposed for hybrid RF/FSO wireless mesh networks. The optimization framework is proposed for the objective of maximizing throughput of overall hybrid networks through joint transmission slot assignment, FSO links allocation and power control with the consideration of the fading nature of RF and FSO links. The scheme is formulated as an instance of mixed integer linear program (MILP) and the optimal solutions are provided using CPLEX and Gurobi optimizers. How to choose the appropriate optimizer is discussed by comparing their performance. Numerous simulations are done to demonstrate that the performance of our optimization scheme is much better than the current case of having the same topology.

  • This paper presents an indoor prototype for wireless digital signal transmission using Visible Light Communications (VLC) in which high power Light Emitting Diode (LED) is used. Using low cost and off-the-shelf components, the transmitter module is constructed using an AVR Atmega128 microcontroller and commercial white beam LEDs. Modulating the light intensity of the LED enables digital signals to be transmitted across the optical link. The receiver module employs a high speed PIN photodetector for optical signal detection and a recovery circuit for optical-electro signal conversion. By sending digitalized data via VLC technology, many applications can be realized in the areas of consumer advertising, traffic safety information and disaster control.

  • Underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) is a good candidate for high-speed underwater wireless communication. In this work, we compare the performance of several modulation techniques for a UOWC system consisting of a light-emitting diode (LED) with an operating wavelength of 405 nm and a Si avalanche photodiode (APD). In this work, we consider six modulation schemes: 4-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), 8-QAM, quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), binary phase shift keying (BPSK), on-off keying (OOK), and 4-pulse amplitude modulation (PAM). We also consider the cases of pure water and seawater for the working conditions. Our results show that 4-QAM and 8-QAM perform the best, in terms of communication distance and transmission power efficiency, for all water types considered.
