  • This present study describes an application of UV scanning spectrometer $O_4$ data for retrieval of aerosol vertical profiles in Seoul during the measurement period that includes two Asian dust event days. The results show large variations of aerosol load in vertical and temporal scales. Large variations in aerosol were observed at 1 km in height during the daytime in the measurement period when the Asian dust events took place. The aerosol load, however, was found to be largest at the surface compared to those retrieved at the higher atmospheric layers. The results also clearly identified the diurnal patterns of aerosol vertical distributions. The aerosol load was high in the morning and noon whereas it was low in the afternoon. This study demonstrates that UV scanning spectrometer observations of the oxygen dimer can serve as a potential method for determination of atmospheric aerosol vertical distributions and optical properties.

  • The effective surface of lens was studied for injection molding process and to enable mass production of f-theta lens, which is the primary component of laser printers and laser scanning systems. Injection molding is an optimal method if f-theta lens is frequently used for the mass production of plastic lenses as an aspherical lens that requires ultra-precision. A uniform injection molding system should be maintained to produce high quality lenses. Additionally, to maintain these injection molding systems, various factors such as pressure, speed, temperature, mold and cooling should be considered. However, a lens with the optical characteristics of an f-theta lens can be obtained. The effects of melting and cooling of plastic resin on the effective surface of f-theta lenses and the numerous factors that affect the injection molding process were studied.

  • Laser surface treatment technologies have been used to improve characteristics of wear and to enhance the fatigue resistance for mold parts. The optical lens with the elliptical profile is designed to obtain a wide surface hardening area with a uniform hardness. The objective of this research work is to investigate the influence of the process parameters, such as power of laser and defocused spot position, on the characteristics of laser surface treatment for the case of SKD61 steel and SCM4 steel. From the results of the experiments, it has been shown that the maximum average hardness is approximatly 700${\sim}$780 Hv when the power, focal position and the travel of laser are 1,095 W, 0mm and 0.3 m/min, respectively. In samples treated with lower scanning speeds, some small carbide particles appear in the interdendritic regions. This region contains fine martensite and carbide in proportions which depend on the local thermal cycle.

  • Hollow or bumpy ZnO structures with micrometer-size features have been investigated as photocatalysts for water purification due to their high surface area available for reaction with harmful organic molecules and relatively large size for easy separation after finishing the photocatalytic reaction. In this study, selective synthesis of ZnO hollow or crumpled microspheres was performed using a simple and versatile ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process with various zinc precursors. The morphologies, phases, specific surface areas, and optical properties of the microspheres were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and UV-vis spectroscopy. In addition, the mechanism underlying the formation of different morphologies and their photocatalytic activities were systematically investigated.

  • An experimental study of the development of carbon black dispersion by an internal mixer and its characterization is presented. We describe the measurement of carbon black agglomerate size and related characteristics using four different experimental techniques : optical microscopy, scanning elctrion microscopy, surface roughness, and electrical couductivity. The results from these different experiments are compared uning the same carbon black for a series of six different butadiene-styrene copolymers. The results from the different techniques are cross plotted and are critically discussed. It is found that surface but then sharply deteriorate. At subsequent stages of mixing optical microscopy seemed the most reliable measure.

• Optical microscope, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and fluorescent microscope were used for qualitative and morphological studies of the attached biomass on PE (polyethylene) substratum under anaerobic condition. It was shown by the observation of optical microscope that the initial attachment of biomass began in crevices of the surface of PE. The shape and structure of the attached biofilm could be observed by SEM photographs, but species of bacteria were and methanogens were not classified. A large number of methanogenic bacteria were identified on the surface of PE substratum by fluorescence under 480nm of radiation. It was estimated that methanogenic bacteria was also related to initial attachment of biomass under anaerobic condition.

  • An acousto-optic tunable filter based 3-D micro surface profile measurement using an equally spaced 5 spectral phase shifting is described. The 5-bucket spectral phase shifting method is compared with a Fourier-transform method in the spectral domain. It can provide a fast measurement capability while maintaining high accuracy since it needs only 5 pieces of spectrally phase shifted imaging data and a simple calculation in comparison with the Fourier transform method that requires full wavelength scanning data and relatively complicated computation. The 3-D profile data of micro objects can be obtained in a few seconds with an accuracy of ${\sim}10nm$. The 3-D profile method also has an inherent benefit in terms of being speckle-free in measuring diffuse micro objects by employing an incoherent light source. Those simplicity and practical applicability is expected to have diverse applications in 3-D micro profilometry such as semiconductors and micro-biology.

  • A four beam interference optical system for laser micro structuring using a pulse laser was demonstrated. The four beam interference optical system using a pulse laser(picosecond laser) can fabricate micro structure on mold material(NAK80) directly. Micro structure on the polymer can be reproduced economically by injection molding of the micro structure on the mold material. The four beam interference optical system was composed by the DOE(Diffractive Optical Element) and two lenses. The laser intensity distribution of four beam interference was explained by an interference optics point of view and by the image optics point of view. We revealed that both views showed the same result. The laser power distribution of a $1{\mu}m$ peak pattern was made by the four beam interference optical system and measured by the objective lens and CCD. A $1{\mu}m$ pitch dot pattern on the mold material was fabricated and measured by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy).

  • The etching characteristics of a $LiNbO_{3}$ optical waveguide structure have been investigated using neutral loop discharge plasma with the mixture of $C_{3}F_{8}$ and Ar and the bias power parameters. The etching rate and profile angle of optical waveguide with etching parameters were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. Also, the etching RMS roughness was evaluated by atomic force microscopy. From the results of optimum etching conditions are the $C_{3}F_{8}$ gas flow ratio of 0.2 and the bias power of 300 W.
