  • Recently, the interest on micro optical parts has increased rapidly with the development of technology related to microsystems. Among the optical parts, micro lens is one of the most broadly used micro parts. To mass-produce the micro lenses, it is very effective to use the mold insert and injection molding process. There are many methods to fabricate the mold insert for micro lenses: electroforming, etching, mechanical micromachining and so on. In this study, we fabricated the mold insert for micro lenses using a micro ball endmill to apply mechanical micromaching method and analyzed the effect of main process parameters such as spindle speed, feed rate, dwell time on the processed surface. Then, using fabricated the mold insert we fabricated the micro lenses through injection molding process.

  • The epitaxial layer structures for blue InGaN light emitting diodes have been optimized for high brightness applications with the output power levels exceeding 1000 $W/cm^2$ by using a self-consistent finite element method. The light-current-voltage relationship has been directly estimated from the multiband Hamiltonian for wurtzite crystals. To analyze the efficiency droop at high injection levels, the major nonradiative recombination processes and carrier spillover have also been taken into account. The wall-plug efficiency at high injection levels up to several thousand $A/cm^2$ has been successfully evaluated for various epilayer structures facilitating optimization of the epitaxial structures for desired output power levels.

  • The global applications of aspherics surfaces will expand rapidly on the electronics, optical components, communications, aerospace, defense, and medical optics devices etc. Especially, Asymmetric aspheric prism lens is one of the important parts in HMD(Head Mounted Display) because it affects dominantly on the optical performance of HMD. The mold core is the most important device to produce the plastic lenses by injection molding method. In this study, the mold cores for asymmetric aspheric prism lens were processed using fly-cutting method which is kind of the ultra precision processing and form accuracy and surface roughness of the cores were measured.

  • The electrochromic properties of $WO_{3}$/$MoO_{3}$ and $MoO_{3}$/$WO_{3}$ double-layers have been systemically studied. The double-layers were made by a e-beam evaporation method and investigated by studying optical modulation, transmittance, and cyclic voltammetry. The devices exhibit good optical properties with wavelength range of 400 to 1100 nm(visible and infrared) during coloration as a function of lithium ion charge injection. It has shown that the double-layer electrochromic thin films are improved the electrochromic properties, but the electrochemical properties are less stable.

  • Differential absorption LIDAR (DIAL) is frequently used for atmospheric gas monitoring to detect impurities such as nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, iodine, and ozone. However, large differences in the on- and off-line laser wavelengths can cause serious errors owing to differential aerosol scattering. To resolve this problem, we have developed a new DIAL system for iodine vapor measurements in particular. The suggested DIAL system uses only one laser under seeded and unseeded conditions. To check the detection-sensitivity and error effects, we compared the results from a system using two seeded lasers with those from a system using a seeded and an unseeded laser. We demonstrate that the iodine concentration sensitivity of our system is improved in comparison to the conventional two seeded or two unseeded laser combinations.

  • Here we report an optimized hot-injection method and a phase transfer strategy for the synthesis of water-soluble $CuInS_2$ QDs with desired properties. The structure and morphology studies demonstrate that the resulting QDs are $CuInS_2$ tetragonal phase with well-defined facets. It is also found that the crystal size gradually increases with the increase of reaction temperature, while the surface of QDs with pre- and post-phase transfer is functionalized with hydrophobic and hydrophilic ligands, respectively. Spectroscopy measurements reveal the size-dependent optical properties of $CuInS_2$ QDs, demonstrating the quantum confinement effect in this system.

  • The present work focuses on the prediction of birefringence in injection-molded plastic part and its improvement by rapid mold heating. To calculate birefringence, flow-induced residual stress is computed through a fully three-dimensional injection molding analysis. Then the stress-optical law is applied from which the order of birefringence can be evaluated and visualized. The birefringence patterns are predicted for a rectangular plate with a variation of mold temperatures, which shows that the amount of molecular orientation and birefringence level decreases with an increase of mold temperature. The effect of mold temperature on the order of birefringence is also studied for a thin-walled rectangular strip, and compared with experimental measurements. Both predicted and experimental patterns of birefringence are in agreements on the observation that the birefringence level diminishes significantly when the mold temperature is raised to above the glass transition temperature.

  • This study is an attempt to understand the birefringence and stress development in an injection molded disk. A computer code was developed to simulate all three stages of the injection molding process - filling, packing and cooling by finite element method. The constitutive equation used here was compressible Leonov model. The PVT relationship was assumed to follow the Tait equation. The flow-induced birefringence was related to the calculated flow stresses through the linear stress-optical law. The predicted birefringence was in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • This paper is the second of 3 companion papers which investigate axial stratification process. In-cylinder fuel behavior has been investigated in the port injected Sl engine by visualizing for the purpose of understanding stratification. Planar laser light sheet from an Nd:YAG laser has been illuminated through the transparent quartz cylinder of the single cylinder optical engine and the Mie scattered light has been captured through the quartz window in the piston head with an ICCD camera. Fuel has been replaced with an air-ethanol mixture to utilize atomized fuel spray fur the visualization purposes. This results have been compared with steady flow concentration measurement. For low/medium swirl port, the early injection makes such a fuel distribution state that is upper-rich, middle-lean and lower-rich along the combustion chamber and cylinder by tumbling motion. On the other hand, the late injection induces upper-rich, middle-lean and lower-rich state due to the short fuel penetration.
