  • It is shown that even if the modulating frequency of the light is too high for direct detection the signal can be extracted by frequency conversion at the same time as the detection by means of the nonlinearity of the APD. When this frequency conversion detection is applied to an optical receiver, the detection bandwidth can be increased while the configuration of the optical detection circuit and the signal processing in the subsequent stages are simplified. A fundamental analysis is carried out with an APD which is confirmed experimentally.

  • We propose a novel scheme to transmit high center frequency RF signals using electroabsorption devices (EADs) as frequency converters at the transmitter and the receiver. In this approach frequency heterodyning is employed for obtaining high center frequency. With the EAD as a detector/mixer at the receiver we demonstrated a smaller conversion loss than that of the conventional modulator/mixer. With EAD as a modulator/mixer at the transmitter and with two heterodyned lasers to generate an optical local oscillator (LO), we demonstrated a large reduction (${\sim}23dB$) in conversion loss, and the transmission is not limited by the optical saturation of the EAD. This transmission scheme has optical single-side-band transmission feature which greatly relieves the fiber dispersion effect.

  • High-speed harmonic optical modulation-demodulation schemes are presented and a possibility of the schemes for applying to high-speed light wave transmission system is tested at microwave frequency range. An example of this concept is as follows : Light wave is modulated succeedingly through cascaded optical modulators by a sub-carrier to produce a modulated light wave at harmonic frequency which is higher than the feasible frequency of the individual modulators. For demodulation of the base-band signal, the high frequency optical sub-carrier is down-converted by the same kind of optical modulator with the same concept of harmonic modulation.

  • As laser pulse width becomes shortened from nanoseconds to femtoseconds, the effects caused by the dispersions of nonlinear optical mediums, such as group velocity mismatch and group velocity dispersion become considerably significant. The group velocity mismatch and group velocity dispersion are the major factors that lead to a decrease of frequency conversion efficiency and pulse spreading for picosecond and femtosecond pulses. • Even though the modulating signal frequency of the light is too high to detect directly, the signal can be extracted by frequency conversion at the same time as the detection by means of the non-linearity of the APD. An analysis is presented for super-high-speed optical demodulation by an APD with electronic mixing. A normalized gain is defined to evaluate the performance of the frequency conversion demodulation. The nonlinear effect of the internal capacitance was included in the small signal circuit analysis. We showed theoretically and experimentally that the normalized gain is dependent on the down converted difference frequency component. In the experiment, the down converted different frequency outputs became larger than the directly detected original signal for the applied local signal of 20㏈m.

  • The wavelength converter is considered to be a key element of future dense WDM optical networks. It enables wavelength reuse and resolves contention problem. Moreover, the tunability of the wavelength converter enhance the flexibility of network systems by facilitating reconfigurable dynamic wavelength routing. In order to achieve optically tunable wavelength conversion, we recently proposed and experimentally demonstrated wavelength conversion and tuning based on cascaded sum and difference frequency generation in a Ti:PPLN channel waveguide. • We present a multi-tap microwave photonic filter with high selectivity through applying time-to-frequency mapping and optical frequency comb shaping techniques. When arranged in the time-to-frequency mapping stage, by a Fourier transform, the deviation of the optical taps to the target profile is significantly reduced while maintaining the apodization profile, resulting in high sidelobe suppression in the filters. By applying a simple time-to-frequency mapping stage to the conventional optical frequency combs, we demonstrate a substantially enhanced (>10dB) sidelobe suppression, resulting in filter lineshapes exhibiting a significantly high (>40dB) main lobe to sidelobe suppression ratio. These results highlight the potential of the technique for implementation in various passband filters with high sidelobe suppression.

  • We fabricated red organic light emitting diodes(OLEDs) utilizing tis(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum $(Alq_3)$ doped with $5\%$ of (4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-i-propyl-6-(1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran) (DCJTI) and investigated the driving and modulation characteristics for applying to the electro-optical conversion device. To improve the driving characteristics of red OLEDs, 3 V of offset voltage, which is equal to the turn on voltage, Is applied to the device. Offset voltage enhanced the optical EL output and reduced the rise time of EL waveforms of red OLEDs, and hence the cutoff frequency is increased with increasing applied voltage. The optical pulse of 100 MHz has been obtained from red OLEDs. Therefore, we confirmed that the red OLEDs can be applied to the fields of optical communication as an electro-optical conversion device.

  • Photoacoustic generation of ultrasound is an effective approach for development of high-frequency and high-amplitude ultrasound transmitters. This requires an efficient energy converter from optical input to acoustic output. For such photoacoustic conversion, various light-absorbing materials have been used such as metallic coating, dye-doped polymer composite, and nanostructure composite. These transmitters absorb laser pulses with 5-10 ns widths for generation of tens-of-MHz frequency ultrasound. The short optical pulse leads to rapid heating of the irradiated region and therefore fast thermal expansion before significant heat diffusion occurs to the surrounding. In this purpose, nanocomposite thin films containing gold nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), or carbon nanofibers have been recently proposed for high optical absorption, efficient thermoacosutic transfer, and mechanical robustness. These properties are necessary to produce a high-amplitude ultrasonic output under a low-energy optical input. Here, we investigate carbon nanotube (CNT)-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite transmitters and their nanostructure-originated characteristics enabling extraordinary energy conversion. We explain a thermoelastic energy conversion mechanism within the nanocomposite and examine nanostructures by using a scanning electron microscopy. Then, we measure laser-induced damage threshold of the transmitters against pulsed laser ablation. Particularly, laser-induced damage threshold has been largely overlooked so far in the development of photoacoustic transmitters. Higher damage threshold means that transmitters can withstand optical irradiation with higher laser energy and produce higher pressure output proportional to such optical input. We discuss an optimal design of CNT-PDMS composite transmitter for high-amplitude pressure generation (e.g. focused ultrasound transmitter) useful for therapeutic applications. It is fabricated using a focal structure (spherically concave substrate) that is coated with a CNT-PDMS composite layer. We also introduce some application examples of the high-amplitude focused transmitter based on the CNT-PDMS composite film.

  • Terahertz (THz) generation by a GaP ridge waveguide with a collinear modal phase-matching scheme based on cascaded difference frequency generation (DFG) processes is theoretically analyzed. The cascaded Stokes interaction processes and the cascaded anti-Stokes interaction processes are investigated from coupled wave equations. THz intensities and quantum conversion efficiency are calculated. Compared with non-cascaded DFG processes, THz intensities from 11-order cascaded DFG processes are increased to 5.48. The quantum conversion efficiency of 177.9% in cascaded processes can be realized, exceeding the Manley-Rowe limit.
