Effect of Steady and Relaxation Oscillation in Brillouin-Active Fiber Ring Structural Sensors (유도 브릴루앙-파이버 링센서에서 비안정화 현상)

  • We have developed a practical Brillouin active fiber ring sensor of length less than 20m, by employing an optical amplifier to compensate for most of the connection losses in the ring. The loss reduction brings the standard Brillouin threshold from 21 down to 0-0.1 through the enhancement of the finesse of the ring. However, in the course of our experiments, some level of temporal instability and chaotic behavior in the backscattered Stokes intensity and also in its spectral line shift were consistently observed.   • We demonstrate a time- and wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network system employing a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser array-based optical line terminal transceiver and a tunable bidirectional optical subassembly-based optical network terminal transceiver. A packet error-free operation is achieved after a 40 km single-mode fiber bidirectional transmission. We also discuss an arrayed waveguide grating, a photo detector array based on complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor photonics technologies, and low-cost key devices for deployment in access networks.

  • We report on the visible photoluminescence of the Tb/Yb co-doped alumino-germano-silicate fibers for visible fiber laser application. By changing the concentration ratios of $Tb^{3+}$ to $Yb^{3+}$, we optimized the solution doping conditions and obtained the highest emission efficiency at 546nm. The luminescence intensity at 546nm was found to increase with the relative increase of $Tb^{3+}$ ions.

  • Considering the field of high frequency or broad-band signal filtering with high speed, we pro-pose optical fiber filters which consist of directional couplers and optical fiber delay elements. Fiber delay line signal processor Is operated with Incoherent optical carrier because of Its simplicity. Due to the characteristics of the directional coupler which Is basic element of optical fiber filter a new design method which Is different from that of usual digital filter is required. By considering the characteristics of directional coupler and in order to make good use of the optical signal energy, we have given the design formulae and the conditions of optical fiber filters for the direct and the lattice form.

  • Subpicosecond all-optical switching method based on the simultaneous two-photon coherence exchange is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The optical switching mechanism is based on the optical field induced dark resonance swapping via nondegenerate four-wave mixing processes. For potential applications of ultrafast all-optical switching in fiber-optic communications, 10-THz channel number independent quantum router is discussed.

  • we propose an external cavity laser which can adjust the number of longitudinal laser mode by using a tunable chirped fiber. Bragg grating. By inducing a tunable temperature gradient in a uniform fiber Bragg grating, the bandwidth of the unform fiber Bragg grating can be tuned. With the chirped fiber Bragg grating as an external reflector of the external cavity laser, the number of longitudinal laser mode was able to be tuned from one to two or three modes.

Add/drop Filter for CWDM Systems Using Side-coupled Long-period Fiber Gratings

  • We demonstrate a simple and effective wavelength-tunable add/drop filter suitable for coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) systems. The filter consists of two fibers in contact side by side, with identical long-period fiber gratings (LPG) in each fiber. The LPG couples the power in the fundamental core mode to one of the cladding modes, which is then coupled to the same order cladding mode in the other fiber through evanescent-field coupling between two fibers. Finally, the cladding mode in the second fiber is coupled to its core mode with the help of the other LPG. With an optimal longitudinal offset distance of 10 em, coupling efficiency as high as -1.68 dB and side lobes smaller than -24 dB were experimentally obtained. The experimental results agreed well with the theoretical ones. The operating wavelength of the proposed add/drop filter was tunable by varying the temperature. The temperature sensitivity was measured to be -0.43 nm/$^{\circ}C$.

  • We propose a two-dimensional temporal/wavelength optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) encoder/decoder, which has an array of superstructured fiber Bragg gratings (SSFBGs). SSFBGs in an encoder/decoder have different wavelengths from each other and can be coded with the same OCDMA code or not. Simulation was performed to analyze the feasibility of the scheme.
