Number Plate Detection with a Multi-Convolutional Neural Network Approach with Optical Character Recognition for Mobile Devices

  • In this paper, we propose a method to achieve improved number plate detection for mobile devices by applying a multiple convolutional neural network (CNN) approach. First, we processed supervised CNN-verified car detection and then we applied the detected car regions to the next supervised CNN-verifier for number plate detection. In the final step, the detected number plate regions were verified through optical character recognition by another CNN-verifier. Since mobile devices are limited in computation power, we are proposing a fast method to recognize number plates. We expect for it to be used in the field of intelligent transportation systems.

  • This paper discusses the method of moving object detection for biped robot walking. Most researches on vision based object detection have mostly focused on fixed camera based algorithm itself. However, developing vision systems for biped walking robot is an important and urgent issue since hired walking robots are ultimately developed not only for researches but to be utilized in real life. In the research, method for moving object detection has been developed for task assignment and execution of biped robot as well as for human robot interaction (HRI) system. But these methods are not suitable to biped walking robot. So, we suggest the advanced method which is suitable to biped walking robot platform. For carrying out certain tasks, an object detecting system using modified optical flow algorithm by wireless vision camera is implemented in a biped walking robot.

  • The conventional fire detection devices are operated after a processed fire phase, which are sensing only a high density of smoke level or high temperature heat. They are not so precision to detect a fire in the early phase to protect the facility from the fire. We need to develope a new high precision smoke detection system to keep expensive industial facilities most reliably from fire. A new optical precision smoke detection system was developed. It monitors very low level density of smoke psrticles in the air. It is operated continuously through many years without a stop or any malfunction. The developed precision smoke detection system will be installed in important industrial facilities,such as power plants, underground common tunnel,main control rooms,computer rooms etc.

ODSB and OSSB Error Performance Analysis of MMoF Systems in Rician Fading Channel

  • Error performance of two modulation schemes of millimeter-wave over fiber (MMoF) system i.e., optical double side band (ODSB) and optical single side band (OSSB) modulations is analyzed under Rician fading. Bit error rates (BER) of two detection techniques i.e., coherent and noncoherent detection are also compared in Rician fading. In aspect of error performance, ODSB modulation scheme has better BER than OSSB modulation scheme has under Rician fading. On the other hand, OSSB modulation scheme is advantageous in case of considering high bandwidth efficiency and small power degradation. Coherent detection technique is proper in Rician fading, because coherent detection provides more SNR gain whether fading is serious or not. Noncoherent detection can be applied when we need a simple receiver structure.

  • In the ground environment, mobile robot research uses sensors such as GPS and optical cameras to localize surrounding landmarks and to estimate the position of the robot. However, an underwater environment restricts the use of sensors such as optical cameras and GPS. Also, unlike the ground environment, it is difficult to make a continuous observation of landmarks for location estimation. So, in underwater research, artificial markers are installed to generate a strong and lasting landmark. When artificial markers are acquired with an underwater sonar sensor, different types of noise are caused in the underwater sonar image. This noise is one of the factors that reduces object detection performance. This paper aims to improve object detection performance through distortion and rotation augmentation of training data. Object detection is detected using a Faster R-CNN.

U2Net-based Single-pixel Imaging Salient Object Detection

  • At certain wavelengths, single-pixel imaging is considered to be a solution that can achieve high quality imaging and also reduce costs. However, achieving imaging of complex scenes is an overhead-intensive process for single-pixel imaging systems, so low efficiency and high consumption are the biggest obstacles to their practical application. Improving efficiency to reduce overhead is the solution to this problem. Salient object detection is usually used as a pre-processing step in computer vision tasks, mimicking human functions in complex natural scenes, to reduce overhead and improve efficiency by focusing on regions with a large amount of information. Therefore, in this paper, we explore the implementation of salient object detection based on single-pixel imaging after a single pixel, and propose a scheme to reconstruct images based on Fourier bases and use U2Net models for salient object detection.

계층간 교차 개념을 적용한 광 부호분할 다중접속 시스템의 성능 분석 (Performance Analysis of Optical CDMA System with Cross-Layer Concept)

  • 본 논문에서는 계층간 교차 (Cross-Layer) 개념을 적용하여 터보 (Turbo) 부호화된 광 (Optical) 부호분할 다중접속 (CDMA : Code Division Multiple Access) 시스템의 네트워크 성능을 분석하고 실험하였다. 계층간 교차 개념은 물리 (Physical) 계층과 매체접근제어 (MAC : Medium Access Control) 계층을 고려하였다. 시스템은 펄스위치변조 (PPM : Pulse Position Modulation)를 적용한 강도변조/직접검파 (IM/DD : Intensity Modulation/Direct Detection) 방식의 광 시스템을 고려하였다. 그리고 시스템의 성능을 향상시키기 위해 병렬 연접된 길쌈부호 (PCCC : Parallel Concatenated Convolutional Code)로 이루어진 터보 부호를 사용하였다. 네트워크의 성능은 비트오류확률 (BEP : Bit Error Probabiliy) 측면에서 분석되었다. 모의실험 결과, 터보 부호는 적당한 부호화 및 복호화 복잡도에서 상당한 부호화 이득을 제공하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 일정한 부호화율 (Code Rate)에서 인터리버 길이와 복호과정에서의 반복 복호 횟수를 증가시킬수록 시스템 성능이 향상되는 것을 확인하였다.

드론과 지상로봇 간의 협업을 위한 광학흐름 기반 마커 추적방법 (Optical Flow-Based Marker Tracking Algorithm for Collaboration Between Drone and Ground Vehicle)

  • 본 논문에서는 드론과 지상 로봇 간 효과적인 협업을 위하여 광학 흐름 기술 기반의 특징점 추적 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 드론의 비행 중 빠른 움직임에 의하여 많은 문제점이 발생하여 지상물체를 성공적으로 인식하기 위해 직관적이면서도 식별자를 가지고 있는 마커를 사용했다. 특징점 추출이 우수한 FAST알고리즘과 움직임 감지가 우수한 루카스-카나데 광학흐름 알고리즘의 장점들을 혼합하여 기존 특징점-특징량 기반 객체 추적 방법보다 개선된 속도의 실험결과를 보여준다. 또한 제안한 마커의 검출방법에 적절한 이진화 방법을 제안하여 주어진 마커에서의 검출 정확도를 개선하였으며, 추적속도는 유사한 환경의 기존연구보다 40% 이상 개선됨을 확인하였다. 또한 비행드론의 경량화와 속도개선에 문제가 없도록 최소형 고성능의 임베디드 환경을 선택하였으며, 제한된 개발환경에서도 물체검출과 추적 등 복잡한 연산이 가능하도록 동작환경에 대하여 연구하였다. 향후에는 다른 환경에서 빠르게 움직이는 두 로봇 간의 협업의 정확도를 향상시키기 위해 지능적 비전기능에 대해 추가할 예정이다.

Quantifying Aberrations on Object Plane Using Zernike Polynomials

  • Optical systems often suffer from optical aberrations caused by imperfect hardware, which places significant constraints on their utility and performance. To reduce these undesirable effects, a comprehensive understanding of the aberrations inherent to optical systems is needed. This article presents an effective method for aberration detection using Zernike polynomials. The process involves scanning the object plane to identify the optimal focus and subsequently fitting the acquired focus data to Zernike polynomials. This fitting procedure facilitates the analysis of various aberrations in the optical system.

Flatfish Vitellogenin Detection Using Optical Waveguide Lightmode Spectroscopy-based Immunosensor

  • A sensitive optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy-based immunosensor was developed to detect vitellogenin in seawater flatfish (Paralichthys olivaceus). For this purpose, anion-exchange column chromatography with DE-52 resin was used to purify flatfish vitellogenin from flatfish serum containing vitellogenin that had been induced using an intraperitoneal $17{\beta}$-estradiol injection. The anti-flatfish vitellogenin antibody used as the biological component of the above immunosensor was prepared using the purified flatfish vitellogenin. The change in the incoupling angle according to the complexation between the flatfish vitellogenin and its antibody, immobilized over an optical grating coupler sensor chip, was measured to calculate the sensor response. The immunosensor was quite specific to flatfish vitellogenin binding, based on no sensor response in the case of bovine serum albumin immobilization. When plotted using double-logarithmic scales, the sensor responses increased linearly in flatfish vitellogenin concentrations of 0.00675-67.5 nM, with a detection limit of 0.0675 nM. The reusability during seven repetitive measurements was reasonably fair for the preliminary screening of flatfish vitellogenin.
