  • We analyzed the excitation coefficients and the extinction ratio as a function of waveguide width, center to center distance, and angle of input waveguide for a directional coupler. The variation of thc difference between excitation coefficients is similar to that of the extinction ratio. Also, the smaller the difference between those is, the better the extinction ratio is. This concept will have application to devices using optical coupling.

  • Optimum characteristics of digital X-ray sensor components were analyzed to develop intra- oral dental digital X-ray image sensor using indirect method. Parametric analysis was carried out to optimize the phosphor thickness and the fiber optic plate (FOP) coupling to charge coupled device (CCD). X-ray absorption and light diffusion in the phosphor layer were analyzed by the Monte Carlo method. Real time X-ray image was obtained with prototype X- ray image sensor using general CCD camera with 1∼10 Ip/mm resolution. It has been previously shown that large resolution degradation in X-ray images was caused by miss alignment of FOP to CCD and optical adhesive selection. In this study, we reported that X-ray image quality was greatly improved by using optimized characteristics of alignment device and phosphor thickness.

  • A highly simplified backlight unit mainly composed of diffractive grating in sub-micron order imprinted light-guide plate (LGP) is proposed for edge-lit backlight unit. Optical characteristics of the imprinted LGP are examined by RCWA and the performance is verified through Monte Carlo simulation. Results show that the diffraction efficiency, luminous flux and its uniformity over the area are significantly affected by the angle of incident ray. Consequently couples of design considerations are additionally proposed to enhance luminous flux. In terms of peak luminance and out-coupling luminous flux, the experimental results are agreed well with the performance simulation. Finally, compared with optical characteristics of conventional backlight unit, we could conclude that the proposed simplified backlight unit made of diffractive grating imprinted light-guide plate is a good substitute for the conventional backlight unit.

  • Spatial and temporal dynamics arising in a photorefractive crystal(BaTiO3) during the process of double phase conjugation was studied experimentally. We studied the dynamical effects caused by the buildup of the diffraction grating and turn on of phase conjugated beams, as well as the spatial effects caused by the finite transverse coupling of beams and the propagation direction of beams. We observed conical emission in DPCM. We believe that various temporal and spatial instabilities are due to movement of the nonlinear grating. For a real beam coupling and constructive interaction of interference fringes in the crystal, we observed steady, periodic, irregular temporal behavior. And, by the calculation of the correlation index, we found that the spatial correlation decreased as the transverse interaction region was increased.

  • In this paper, to evaluate the design properties of 3D optical multimode interference (MMI) couplers with ultracompact width, modal transmission line theory and effective dielectric method are combined with together. A coupling efficiency based on the composed approach is defined, and the coupling length is numerically determined for the design of 3 dB coupler, cross coupler and bar coupler. The simulation result shows that the designed MMI coupler has a low insertion loss and a high splitting ratio.

  • We investigated the preparation and guided-mode properties of $Ti:LiNbO_3$ waveguides which were fabricated by Ti in-diffusion. The diffusion method to reduce the Li out-diffusion was proposed. The optical guided-mode and propagation loss based on butt-coupling pigtailed with PMF-input were measured. How to improve the polishing grade of waveguide endfaces is newly proposed in this paper. To show the mode propagations, the BPM simulations of channel waveguide are described.

  • In this paper, a microstructured, hexagonal-shaped dual-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is proposed. The proposed structure has specific optical properties to obtain high birefringence and short coupling length, for different values of structural parameters varied over a wide range of wavelength. The properties are analyzed using a solid core of silica material. The proposed structure is implemented as a polarization splitter with splitting length of 1.9 mm and a splitting ratio of -34.988 dB, at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The obtained bandwidth in one band gap of about 81 nm. The numerical analysis ensures that the performance of the proposed polarization splitter is better than that of existing ones.

  • A mirror-in-slab waveguide is fabricated on a slab waveguide by using the refractive-index contrast between two materials, with the reflection performance depending on the slab waveguide's design. In this research, a slab waveguide design consisting of silicon (Si) as the core and SiO2 as the substrate was designed and developed to determine the coupling, waveguide, and mirror losses. Based on experimental results, coupling loss is dominant and is affected by the design of the slab waveguide. Furthermore, the mirror loss is affected by the design of the mirror, such as the curvature radius and the size of the mirror. TE and TM polarizations of light are used in the measurements. The experimental results show that mirror losses due to reflection by mirrors are 0.011 dB/mirror and 0.007 dB/mirror for TE and TM polarizations respectively. A simulation was performed to confirm whether the size of mirror is sufficient to reflect the input light, and to check the quality of the surfaces of fabricated mirrors.

  • We report the experimental results for the coupling properties of the an side-polished single-mode fiber covered with metal-clad planar waveguide. The experimental results show that the large birefringence of a metal-clad planar waveguide facilitates the effective separation of TE and TM polarization in the spectral domain. Additionally the resonant wavelengths of the device are tuned based in the thermo-optic effect of polymer planar waveguide.

  • The coupling properties of supermodes guided by grating-assisted directional couplers (GADCs) can be phrased in rigorous modal theory. Such a modal solution for TE modes expressed by simple electrical transmission-line networks is utilized to analyze the power distribution of GADCS with three guiding channels. In particular, the modal transmission-line theory can serve as a template for computational algorithms that systematically evaluate the coupling efficiency that are not readily obtained by other methods.
