  • An existing infrared (IR) analysis system is generally composed of infrared source, IR focusing lenses, IR detector, and optical chopper. An optical chopper is widely used in combination with lock-in amplifier to improve the signal-to-noise ratio by periodically interrupting incident light beam. During recent years, a few researches on miniaturized optical chopper have been reported to apply to micro-scaled optical systems. In this paper, a micro optical chopper operated by electromagnetic actuation is proposed and applied to a miniaturized micro-scaled optical system operating in IR spectral range. Additionally, the fabrication method of the proposed micro chopper is demonstrated. The proposed micro optical chopper is composed of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane, solenoid, and permanent magnet. The permanent magnet is bonded on the PDMS membrane using an ultraviolet-activated adhesive. The operation of the chopper is based on the attractive and repulsive forces between permanent magnet and solenoid induced by an electrical current flowing through the solenoid. The fabricated micro optical chopper could operate up to 200 Hz of frequency. The maximum operating distance of the chopper with 7mm diameter membrane was $750{\mu}m$ at 100 Hz of frequency.

  • The new and simple velocimetry model to be perpendicularly arranged with two optical systems with a projected and reduced rotatable line grating is so proposed as to withstand an external vibration. We measured successfully the various velocities (V_{chop}$) of a chopper by using the new velocimeter. As a result, when rotational angles of projected volume gratings in two optical systems are $\alpha=73^{\circ}$ and $\beta=73^{\circ}$, respectively, we measured successfully the chopper velocities within 1 % accuracy from $V_{chop}=43.52cm/s to 249.36cm/s$. In this new velocimetry, we can determine the confidence of .the system by comparing the z-component of velocity, to be measured in one optical system with $V_z$ to be measured in one optical system with $V_z^'$ to to be measured in another optical system, which should be same.e same.

  • An optical system for a stereoscopic video recorder is designed with the field of view 42$^{\circ}$ and effective diameter 22 mm. We can use it by attaching it to the front lens of any video camera or camcorder to record a stereoscopic scene. This system is a double Kepler type afocal system to make the image erect and a bi-ocular type to record and display the stereoscopic scene. The optical tube length is folded with several flat mirrors and a beam splitter to be compact. This optical system is composed of 4 groups of lenses and each group serves as a relay lens for minimizing the vignetting effect. Whole field stereoscopic scenes may be captured by perpendicularly polarized alternated recording with a chopper and two perpendicular polarizers, without any loss of light energy. The displayed images may be seen stereoscopically with polarized spectacles and are kinetic because of an afterimage effect.

  • Chaotic states of a low-frequency modulating C.W .Co2 laser beam is observed. The output behaviors appear quasi-periodicity and chaotic states when the laser beam is modulated from 100Hz to 1000Hz by using an intracavity chopper. And the output characteristics of the laser beam show a route to chaos as increasing input power when the modulation speed is 500Hz.

  • A new technique utilizing LII signal for the measurement of flow velocities of laminar diffusion flames has been investigated. Soot particles in ethylene diffusion flames are heated by a modulated Ar-ion laser beam. LII signals and their phase angles are measured using a lock-in amplifier at the different flame heights and the axial flow velocity are obtained from the measured phase angle delay. The measured velocities are similar to those from LDV measurements under the same operating conditions. The effects of laser power, LII signal wavelength, and modulation frequency are not sensitive to the velocity measurement. However, the choice of an optical chopper blade type could affect the measurement result. The use of a 6/5 chopper blade showed the better result that is possibly due to the square shape of modulated laser beam. This study successfully demonstrated that axial flow velocities of laminar diffusion flames can be measured by a new technique utilizing LII signal, which does not need particle seeding unlikely to LDV or PIV techniques.

  • The Optical Wide-field patroL-Network (OWL-Net) is a global optical network for Space Situational Awareness in Korea. The primary operational goal of the OWL-Net is to track Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites operated by Korea and to monitor the Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) region near the Korean peninsula. To obtain dense measurements on LEO tracking, the chopper system was adopted in the OWL-Net's back-end system. Dozens of angle-only measurements can be obtained for a single shot with the observation mode for LEO tracking. In previous work, the reduction process of the LEO tracking data was presented, along with the mechanical specification of the back-end system of the OWL-Net. In this research, we describe an integrity assessment method of time-position matching and verification of results from real observations of LEO satellites. The change rate of the angle of each streak in the shot was checked to assess the results of the matching process. The time error due to the chopper rotation motion was corrected after re-matching of time and position. The corrected measurements were compared with the simulated observation data, which were taken from the Consolidated Prediction File from the International Laser Ranging Service. The comparison results are presented in the In-track and Cross-track frame.

  • The detector subsystem of the Optical Wide-field Patrol (OWL) network efficiently acquires the position and time information of moving objects such as artificial satellites through its chopper system, which consists of 4 blades in front of the CCD camera. Using this system, it is possible to get more position data with the same exposure time by changing the streaks of the moving objects into many pieces with the fast rotating blades during sidereal tracking. At the same time, the time data from the rotating chopper can be acquired by the time tagger connected to the photo diode. To analyze the orbits of the targets detected in the image data of such a system, a sequential procedure of determining the positions of separated streak lines was developed that involved calculating the World Coordinate System (WCS) solution to transform the positions into equatorial coordinate systems, and finally combining the time log records from the time tagger with the transformed position data. We introduce this procedure and the preliminary results of the application of this procedure to the test observation images.

  • The modulated LII technique has been suggested for the measurement of axial velocity profiles of laminar diffusion flames. The theoretical background is explained based on the blackbody radiation and LII signal. Experimentally, soot particles in ethylene diffusion flames are heated by a modulated Ar-ion laser beam. LII signals and their phase angles are measured using a lock-in amplifier at the different flame heights and the axial flow velocities are obtained from the measured phase angle delay informations. The measured velocities are similar to those from LDV measurements under the same operating conditions. The effects of laser power, LII signal wavelength, and modulation frequencies are not sensitive to the velocity measurement. However, the choice of an optical chopper blade type could affect the measurement result.
