  • The visible-light communication (VLC) system is a promising candidate to fulfill the present and future demands for a high-speed, cost-effective, and larger-bandwidth communication system. VLC modulates the visible-light signals from solid-state LEDs to transmit data between transmitter and receiver, but the broadcasting and the line-of-sight propagation nature of visible-light signals make VLC a communication system with a limited operating range. We present a novel architecture to increase the operating range of VLC. In our proposed architecture, we guide the visible-light signals through the fiber and amplify the dissipated signals using visible-light fiber amplifiers (VLFAs), which are the most important and the novel devices needed for the proposed architecture of the VLC. Therefore, we design, analyze, and apply a VLFA to VLC, to overcome the inherent drawbacks of VLC. Numerical results show that under given constant conditions, the VLFA can amplify the signal up to 35.0 dB. We have analyzed the effects of fiber length, active ion concentration, pump power, and input signal power on the gain and the noise figure (NF).

  • Using receiver eigenmodes, we perform a time-dependent analysis of optical receivers whose optical inputs are corrupted by the amplified spontaneous emission. We use Gaussian receivers for the analysis with Gaussian input pulses. We find the number of contributing eigenmodes increases as the measurement time moves from the pulse center towards the pulse edges at the output of the optical receiver's electrical filter. This behavior is dependent on the bandwidth ratio between the optical and the electrical filters as well as the input pulse's time width.

  • Mach-Zehnder interferometric wavelength converters with monolithically integrated semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA's) have been fabricated and characteristics of wavelength conversion at 10 Gb/s have been investigated for wavelength span of 40 nm. The devices have been achieved by using a butt-joint combination of buried ridge structure type SOA's and passive waveguides. In the integration, a new method has been applied that removes p+InP cladding layer leading to high propagation loss and forms simultaneously the current blocking and the cladding layer using undoped InP. The module packaging has been achieved by using a titled fiber array for effective coupling into the tilted waveguide in the wavelength converter. Using the module, wavelength conversion with power penalty lower than 1 ㏈ at 10 Gb/s has been demonstrated for wavelength span of 40 nm. In addition, it is show that the module can provide 2R (re-amplification, re-shaping) operation by demonstrating the conversion with the negative penalty.

  • A novel WDM-PON system delivering bidirectional 1.25-Gbps data and broadcasting data is proposed. A subcarrier signal modulates optical carriers of a Fabry-Perot-laser-diode based broadband light source to broadcast to all users. Reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers are used as modulators for the baseband data at both the optical line terminal and the remote optical network unit for a channel. Bit error rate and error vector magnitude were measured to demonstrate the proposed scheme.

  • An all-optical read only memory utilizing cross gain modulation in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) has been demonstrated for the first time to our knowledge. In our demonstration, an all-optical 2-to-4 line decoder constructed with SOAs has been employed for the construction of this all-optical read only memory. Storing four characters in an American standard code for information interchange (ASCII) format has been successfully carried out. Each character consisting of seven binary bits could be read out at a rate of 10 Giga characters per second.

  • A novel all-optical gain-controlled (AOGC) bidirectional amplifier is proposed and demonstrated in a compact structure. The AOGC function using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) pairs controls both directional signals independently, and combinations of optical interleavers and isolators suppress Rayleigh backscattering (RB) noise. The amplifier achieves high and constant gain with a wide dynamic input signal range and low noise figure. The performance does not depend on the input signal conditions, whether static-state or transient signals, or whether there is symmetric or asymmetric data traffic on bidirectional transmission. Transmission comparison experiments between invariable symmetrical and random variable asymmetric bidirectional data traffic verify that the all-optical gain control and bidirectional amplification functions are successfully combined into this proposed amplifier.

  • To realize a desired characteristics of an optical transversal fitters, The number of optical amplifiers as same as the lentgh of a given transfer function is needed In this paper, we consider an optical transversal filter that uses only one fiber amplifier, which can realize a constant(=$\alpha$) times of a given transfer function with e as large as possible in order to make use of optical signal energy. We also present some applications using this optical fiber filter.

  • An optical transmitter, which is a key component of the optical transmission system, converts the electrical signal to optical signal and consists of a high-speed current-pulse driver for laser diode and low-speed feedback loops that stabilize optical power against aging, power supply voltage fluctuations, and ambient temperature changes. In this paper, the power-stabilizing part, which forms the bulk of the optical transmitter circuitry was designed in integrted circuits. Operational amplifiers and reference voltage generation circuits, which were identified as key building blocks for the power-stabilizing feedback loops, were designed and were subsequently verified through HSPICE simulations. The designed operational amplifier consists of a two-stage folded cascode amplifier and class AB output stage, whereas the reference voltage is obtained by bandgap reference circuits. Finally the power-stabilizing circuitry was laid out based on 3\mu$m CMOS design rules for fabrication.

  • We have flattened the gain of EDFA by using a long-period FBG filter and AOTF's. The gain and optical SNR characteristics of the gain-flattened EDFA in long-haul transmission been evaluated in a recirculating EDFA loop. The gain variation was less than 4.6 dB and the optical SNR was higher than 14 dB over 20-nm wavelength range when the optical signal went through the EDFA as many as 200 times. These results indicate that this gain-flattened EDFA is applicable for ultra long-haul WDM optical transmissions over 8000 km.
