  • Optical triangulation is one of the most common methods for acquiring range data. Using this method. We have developed a new type of Laser Displacement Sensor. We used Area CCD instead of linear CCD and PSD (Position Sensitive Detector). And we have developed the robust algorithm for increasing the accuracy and used USB instead of RS-232C for increasing speed. We present results that demonstrate the validity of our method using optical triangulation technique, Area CCD, and USB.

  • This paper presents a non-contact type displacement sensor designed based on optical triangulation method. The optical principles of the sensor are described in detail with aids of paraxial geometric optics. A prototype sensor is designed and fabricated by using modern optoelectronic hardware. Its measuring performances are evaluated and discussed through a series of calibration processes.

  • Modern distance sensing methods employ various measurement principles, including triangulation, time-of-flight, confocal, interferometric and frequency comb. Among them, the triangulation method, with a laser light source and an image sensor, is widely used in low-cost applications. We developed an omnidirectional two-dimensional (2D) distance sensor based on the triangulation principle for indoor floor mapping applications. The sensor has a range of 150-1500 mm with a relative resolution better than 4% over the range and 1% at 1 meter distance. It rotationally scans a compact one-dimensional (1D) distance sensor, composed of a near infrared (NIR) laser diode, a folding mirror, an imaging lens, and an image detector. We designed the sensor layout and configuration to satisfy the required measurement range and resolution, selecting easily available components in a special effort to reduce cost. We built a prototype and tested it with seven representative indoor wall specimens (white wallpaper, gray wallpaper, black wallpaper, furniture wood, black leather, brown leather, and white plastic) in a typical indoor illuminated condition, 200 lux, on a floor under ceiling mounted fluorescent lamps. We confirmed the proposed sensor provided reliable distance reading of all the specimens over the required measurement range (150-1500 mm) with a measurement resolution of 4% overall and 1% at 1 meter, regardless of illumination conditions.

  • Optical Triangulation Probes (OTPs) are widely used for their simple structure. high resolution, and long operating range. However, errors originating from speckle, inclination of the object, source power fluctuation, ambient light, and noise of the detector limit their usability. In this paper, we propose new design criteria for an error-reduced OTP. The light source module for the system consists of an incoherent light source and a multimode optical fiber for eliminating speckle and shaping a Gaussian beam Intensity profile. A diffuse-reflective white copy paper, which is attached to the object, makes the light intensity distribution on the change-coupled device(CCD). Since the peak positions of the intensity distribution are not related to the various error sources, a sub-pixel resolution signal processing algorithm that can detect the peak position makes it possible to construct an error-reduced OTP system

  • Optical triangulation displacement sensors(0TDSs) are widely used for their simple struchlre, high resolution, and long operating range. However, there are several factors that must be taken into account in order to obtain high accuracy and reliability Measurement errors from inclinations a? an object surface, prohe signal fluctuations generated by speckle effects. power vanation of a light source, electronic noises, and so on. Previous models of OTDSs can not show reasonable behavior as change of surface inclination and shape of light intensity distribution on the detector. In this paper, we propose a new and reasonable modeling for diffise-type OTDSs based on a geometrical optics. To verify propriety of new modeling, we take basic experiments. Shape of light intensity distribution is asymmetric in both simulation result and experimental result. Both simulation result and experimental result show same tendency of light intensity distribution movement as changing surface inclination

  • Recently, a laser displacement sensor is widely used for the manufacturing automation. The sensor is generally composed of a diode laser and a light receiving device. The diode laser emits a laser beam and the receiving device detects the light reflected from the measured object. The object position is obtained based upon triangulation method. As a light receiving device, a PSD is usually utilized since its structure is very simple and rugged and has a high accuracy. Although the theoretical relationship for this sensor had been developed, the characteristics of the sensor have not been much experimentally studied. In this paper, several experimental results will presented. The measurement accuracy is affected by the surface conditions such as the reflectance characteristics, the angle of the object's surface and the laser intensity. In addition, it is found that the PSD and the signal processing circuit have nonlinearities and showed that those nonlinearities can be reduced by controlling the emitting laser intensity.

  • Optical measurement methods make it possible to detect object displacements with high resolution and noncontact measurements. Also, they are very robust against EMI noises and have long operation range. An optical triangulation sensor is one of widely used displacement measurement sensors for its sub-micron resolution, fast response, simple structure, and low cost. However. there are several errors caused by inclinations of a surface. speckle effects, power fluctuations of light sources, and noises of detectors. In this paper, in order to minimize error effects, we performed error analysis and proposed a new structure. Then, we setup a new modeling method and verify it through simulations and experiments. Based on the new model. we propose a new sensor structure and establish design criteria. Finally, we design a signal processing system to overcome a resolution-limited problem of light detectors. The resolution of the proposed system is 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in 5mm operating range.

  • A visual sensor consisted of polygonal mirror, laser, and CCD camera was proposed to measure the distance to the weld joint for recognizing the joint shape. To scan the laser beam of the sensor onto an object, 8-facet polygonal mirror was used as the rotating mirror. By locating the laser and the camera at axi-symmetrical positions around the mirror, the synchronized-scan condition could be satisfied even when the mirror was set to rotate through one direction continuously, which could remove the inertia effect of the conventional oscillating-mirror methods. The mathematical modelling of the proposed sensor with the optical triangulation method made it possible to derive the relation between the position of an image on the camera and the one of a laser light on the object. Through the geometrical simulation of the proposed sensor with the principal of reflection and virtual image, the optical path of a laser light could be predicted. The position and direction of the CCD camera were determined based on the Scheimpflug's condition to fit the focus of any image reflected from an object within the field of view. The results of modelling and simulation revealed that the proposed visual sensor could be used to recognize the weld joint and its vicinity located within the range of the field of view and the resolution. • Measuring the movement of joint angle of human body is very important clinically. Human joint angle displacement can be used to evaluate the degree of disease and disability. Also, we can determine the rehabilitation process with angular information. Conventional methods for measuring angular displacement are many weakness. The purpose of this study is to overcome the limitations of existing equipments by using optical method. For this reason, optical sensor system was used to correlate detected light signal with joint angle. Experimental results of the applied joint model in this study showed that joint angular displacement can be measured by optical signals. The suggested method is simple, durable, small, lightweight, convenient, and cost effective.

  • The vision sensor which is based on the optical triangulation theory with the laser as an auxiliary light source can detect not only the seam position but the shape of seam. In this study, a vision sensor using the scanning laser beam was investigated. To design the vision sensor which considers the reflectivity of the sensing object and satisfies the desired resolution and measuring range, the equation of the focused laser beam which has a Gaussian irradiance profile was firstly formulated, Secondly, the image formaing sequence, and thirdly the relation between the displacement in the measuring surface and the displacement in the camera plane was formulated. Therefore, the focused beam diameter in the measuring range could be determined and the influence of the relative location between the laser and camera plane could be estimated. The measuring range and the resolution of the vision sensor which was based on the Scheimpflug's condition could also be calculated. From the results mentioned above a vision sensor was developed, and an adequate calibration technique was proposed. The image processing algorithm which and recognize the center of joint and its shape informaitons was investigated. Using the developed vision sensor and image processing algorithm, the shape informations was investigated. Using the developed vision sensor and image processing algorithm, the shape informations of the vee-, butt- and lap joint were extracted.
