  • Electrical, optical, and structural properties of indium zinc oxide (IZO) films grown by a box cathode sputtering (BCS) were investigated as a function of oxygen flow ratio. A sheet resistance of $42.6{\Omega}/{\Box}$, average transmittance above 88% in visible range, and root mean spare roughness of $2.7{\AA}$ were obtained even in the IZO layers grown at room temperature. In addition, it is shown that electrical characteristics of the top-emitting organic light emitting diodes (TOLEDs) with the BCS grown-IZO top cathode layer is better than that of TOLEDs with DC sputter grown IZO top cathode, due to absence of plasma damage effect. Furthermore the effects of oxygen flow ratio in IZO films are investigated, based on x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultra violet/visible (UV/VIS) spectro-meter, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis results.

  • We have studied an organic layer thickness dependent optical properties and microcavity effects for top-emission organic light-emitting diodes. Manufactured top emission device, structure is Al(100nm)ITPD(xnm)/$Alq_3$(ynm)/LiF(0.5nm)/Al(23nm). While a thickness of hole-transport layer of TPD was varied from 35 to 65nm, an emissive layer thickness of $Alq_3$ was varied from 50 to 100nm for two devices. A ratio of those two layers was kept to about 2:3. Variation of the layer thickness changes a traverse time of injected carriers across the organic layer, so that it may affect on the chance of probability of exciton formation. View-angle dependent emission spectra were measured for the optical measurements. Top-emission devices show that the emission peak wavelength shifts to longer wavelength as the organic layer thickness increases. For instance, it shifts from 490 to 555nm in the thickness range that we used. View-angle dependent emission spectra show that the emission intensity decreases as the view-angle increases. The organic layer thickness-dependent emission spectra show that the full width at half maximum decreases as the organic layer thickness increases. Top emission devices show that the full width at half maximum changes from 90 to 35nm as the organic layer thickness increases. In top-emission device, the microcavity effect is more vivid as the organic layer thickness increases.

  • We propose a tunable flat-top bandpass filter to pass light in a customized wavelength band by using long-period fiber gratings (LPFG) structure. The LPFG structure is composed of a core mode blocker in between two LPFGs. The bandpass spectrum of the proposed structure is obtained in overlapped wavelength band of two LPFGs operating on the same modes. To analyze the properties, we introduce a mathematical matrix model for the structure. We theoretically demonstrate flexibility of the flat-top bandpass filter with various bandwidths.

  • The optical properties of the materials composing organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are considered when designing the optical structure of OLEDs. Optical design is related to the optical properties, such as the efficiency, emission spectra, and color coordinates of OLED devices because of the microcavity effect in top-emitting OLEDs. In this study, the properties of top-emitting blue OLEDs were optimized by adjusting the thicknesses of the thin metal layer and capping layer (CPL). Deep blue emission was achieved in an OLED structure with a second cavity length, even when the transmittance of the thin metal layer was high. The thin metal film thickness ranges applicable to OLEDs with a second microcavity structure are wide. Instead, the thickness of the thin metal layer determines the optimized thickness of the CPL for high efficiency. A thinner metal layer means that higher efficiency can be obtained in OLED devices with a second microcavity structure. In addition, OLEDs with a thinner metal layer showed less color change as a function of the viewing angle.

  • Optical tables provide a platform for the establishment and test of measurement systems which use Laser. Therefore, not only static characteristics such as surface flatness, static stiffness and etc. but dynamic response characteristics is very important design parameter. The dynamic stiffness is generally estimated through the modal test, and compliance is used as a representative performance standard. Recently there is an example of defining the dynamic deflection coefficient and using it as a new performance standard of the dynamic stiffness, but it is not generalized yet in industry. In this study, we verify the validity of existing DDC calculus by making an experiment on granite. And for improvement in damping performance of optical tables, we are going to evaluate the effect of fillers on the compliance, then develop an epoxy adhesive based on the result of this experiment.

  • A Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT) for $^{87}Rb$ atoms near the surface of a dielectric coated mirror at the top of a small $20{\times}25{\times}40\;mm^3$ cell has been observed. Two beams of $3.3\;mW/cm^2$ were used for optical cooling and an anti-Helmholtz magnetic field with a spatial gradient of 9.1 G/cm was used for magnetic trapping. The thickness of the mirror coated on a cover glass was less than $100{\mu}m$. The mirror covered the top of a cell and the atom-chip was located outside the vacuum in order to exploit the long life time of the mirror and easy operation of the chip. The trapping position was found 5 mm beneath the mirror surface. The number of trapped atoms was roughly $3{\times}10^7$ atoms and the temperature was approximately a few tens mK. In this paper, we describe the construction of the mirror-MOT in detail.

  • In this paper, a long gauge Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor system is described and long gauge FBGs are well-suited for measuring the upper parts of the bridge piers under the extremely severe movement conditions. In the experiments, we used more than 30m long FBG sensors to measure the movement of top part of the bridge piers which are separated from the main bridge by cutting the decks. With the actuator, the deck and girders were pushed and released. We checked the movement of the top of the pier while releasing the pressure of the actuator with the long gauge fiber sensor. In order to measure the movement of the upper part of the pier, the reference point must be outside of the pier. Using the optical fiber sensors, one end of the sensor is attached to the top of the pier and the other end is attached to the bottom of the next pier. The fiber sensors showed good response to the release loading and we could calculate the movement of the top part of the pear.

  • This paper presents an improved vertical alignment nematic liquid crystal mode characterized by the protrusions or slits of the top substrate and additional stripe type common electrodes with polarity switching of the bottom substrate to improve multi-domain vertically aligned (MVA) and patterned vertically aligned (PVA) nematic modes. MVA and PVA modes have disadvantages such as an LC disclination in the vicinity of the middle region of electrodes between the top and bottom protrusions in MVA mode or the top and bottom slits in PVA mode. Therefore, the stripe type common electrode generating a horizontal electric field and the protrusion or slit producing some pretilt of liquid crystals (LCs) were used to improve the LC disclination, which influences the transmittance and response speed. The simulation results showed that the proposed VA mode has higher transmittance than the MVA and PVA modes. As a result, the proposed VA mode can improve the response speed and transmittance remarkably, which makes it useful for upgrading the LCD display quality.
