  • Rewritable optical memory devices such as an CD-RW and DVD+RW are data storage media, which take advantage of the different optical properties in the amorphous and crystalline states of phase change materials. The switching property, structural transformation, transformation kinetics and chemical bindings of $Ge_xSb_{100-x}$($6{\le}x{\le}$34) were studied to investigate the feasibility of applying $Ge_xSb_{100-x}$ alloys in optical memory. The $Ge_xSb_{100-x}$ thin film was deposited by RF magnetron co-sputtering system and phase change characteristics were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), static tester, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) and atomic force microscopy (AEM). Optimum fiim composition of $Ge_xSb_{100-x}$ was studied and its minimum time fur laser induced crystallization and optical contrast fur phase transition was performed. These results might be correlated with the binding energies between Ge and Sb, and indicate that $Ge_xSb_{100-x}$ have an potential far optical memory applications.

  • Aerosol optical properties from the radiation measurements by SKYNET PREDE skyradiometers, POM-01 and POM-02 were compared during the inter-calibration campaign at Seoul in February 2009. The monochromatic solar flux at the top of the atmosphere ($F_0$) gave a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 9-10% for both instruments. This comparatively high value of RSD was probably because $F_0$ was determined at short time intervals, in the morning and afternoon, using the measurements made in the polluted environment of Seoul. Although POM-02 was more effective in tracking the solar radiation, aerosol optical depths (AODs) from the two instruments were very similar after the cloud screening procedure. The squared correlation coefficients ($R^2$) of single scattering albedo (SSA) and real and imaginary refractive indices between the two instruments was around 0.5 but increased to 0.7-0.8 when only using AOD greater than 0.4. Nevertheless, mean values of the Angstrom exponent, SSA, and the imaginary refractive index of POM-02 were higher than those of POM-01.

  • The structural, optical, and electrical properties of Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin films on glass substrates grown by radio-frequency(RF) magnetron sputtering were investigated. The flow ratio of Ar was varied as a deposition parameter for growing high-quality GZO thin films. The structural properties and surface morphologies of GZO were characterized by the X-ray diffraction. To analyze the optical properties of GZO, the optical absorbance was measured in the wavelength range of 300-1100 nm by using UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The optical transmittance, absorption coefficient, and optical bandgap energy of GZO thin films were calculated from the measured data. The crystallinity of GZO thin films is improved and the bandgap energy increases from 3.08 to 3.23eV with the increasing Ar flow ratio from 10 to 100 sccm. The average transmittance of the films is over 88% in the visible range. The lowest resistivity of the GZO is $6.215{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and the hall mobility increases with the increasing Ar flow ratio. We can optimize the characteristics of GZO as a transparent electrode for thin film solar cells by controlling Ar flow ratio during deposition process.

  • Optical properties of aerosols associated with haze events over Seoul were examined using ground-based skyradiometer and satellite-borne CALIOP and MODIS measurements over the 2009~2010 period. It is shown that aerosol optical thickness (AOT), ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponents (${\alpha}$), and fine-mode particles increase during the haze events. The CALIOP-measured vertical profiles of aerosol during the haze events revealed that most of aerosols are loaded within layers below 4 km altitude. A large portion of these events appear to be related to the long-range transport of aerosols from China; about 35% and 18% of the haze events observed over Seoul were traced back to northern China and southern China, respectively. Compared with optical properties for locally-induced haze events (25%), these long-range transported aerosols are found to have relatively higher AOTs.

  • The polarization properties of low birefringent optical fiber due to intrinsie birefringence and magnetooptic effects are theoretically analyzed and experimented. The low birefringent fiber is fo¬und to have more excellent polarization maintaining properties than normal single mode optical fiber. As the experimental results, the polarizability of low birefringent optical fiber is measured over 0.818. The variation of output polarization angle with input polarization angle is measured within $9^{\circ}$. Imple¬mented magnetic field measuring system using low birefringent optical fiber can linearly measure the magnetic field strength up to lOkAT generated by solenoid. The maximum error is 1.95% in the magnetic field strength of 4kAT.

  • The silver sulphide (Ag2S) thin films have been chemically deposited from an alkaline medium (pH 8 to 10) by using a silver nitrate and thiourea as a Ag and S ion precursor sources. Ethylene Damine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) was used as a complexing agent. The effect of annealing atmosphere such as Ar, N2+H2S and O2 on the structural, morphological and optical properties of Ag2S thin films has been studied. The annealed films were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical absorption techniques for the structural, morphological, and optical properties, respectively. XRD studies reveal that the as-deposited thin films are polycrystalline with monoclinic crystal structure, is converted in to silver oxide after air annealing. The surface morphology study shows that grains are uniformly distributed over the entire surface of the substrate. Optical absorption study shows the as-deposited Ag2S thin films with band gap energy of 0.92eV and after air annealing it is found to be 2.25 eV corresponding to silver oxide thin films.

  • Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) single layer and $SiO_2/GZO$ bi-layered films were deposited on Polycarbonate(PC) substrate by radio frequency magnetron sputtering. Influence of the structural, electrical, and optical properties of the films was considered. We have considered the influence of electron irradiation energy of 450 and 900 eV on the stuctural, electrical and optical properties of $SiO_2/GZO$ thin films. The optical transmittance in a visible wave length region increased with the electron irradiation energy. The electrical resistivity of the films were dependent on the electron's irradiation energy. The $SiO_2/GZO$ films irradiated at 900 eV were showen the lowest resistivity of $7.8{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}cm$. The film which was irradiated by electron at 900 eV shows 84.3% optical transmittance and also shows lower than contact angle of $58^{\circ}$ in this study.

  • A bio-optic survey was made in the Yellow Sea in May, 1998 for OSMI cal/val and application project. Optical measurements were made in nine stations. From these measurements, apparent and inherent optical properties such as $K_d$, R, a, and $b_b$ were estimated. The patterns of reflectance indicated that all three major constituents, namely, chlorophyll-a, suspended sediments, and CDOM were active in determining the optical properties in the Yellow Sea. Their relative contribution was different among the stations. All the stations had high backscattering and their values fell in Case 2 category. Although the total absorption was very high, it could not be explained by the level of CDOM concentration. It is suggested that the suspended sediment might be highly absorptive and further study is needed to investigate the optical properties of the suspended sediments.

  • The purpose of this study is to classify the concentration of HbA1c (glycosylated hemoglobin), which is an indicator in the management of accurate blood glucose level in diabetic patients, using a non-invasive optical property measurement method. To measure the optical properties of HbA1c, the optical source uses LEDs and laser diodes of 400 nm in the visible region and 1450 nm in the nearinfrared region using thermopile to detect the Raman scattering intensity. An HbA1c control solution was used. As a result, the optical properties of 5% (normal) and 9% (abnormal) HbA1c control solutions showed specificity in which the output values were reversed at 850 nm and 950 nm, respectively. This property was applied to distinguish between normal and abnormal values in diabetes. In addition, considering tissue penetration depths for non-invasive measurements, two wavelengths were determined to be effective in distinguishing the concentrations of HbA1c control solutions at 5%, 7%, and 9%.
