Aerosol observation with Raman LIDAR in NIES (National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan) LIDAR network was conducted from 17 April to 12 June 2008 over Beijing, China. The aerosol optical properties derived from Raman LIDAR were compared with the retrieved data from sun photometer and sky radiometer observations in the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET). The comparison provided the complete knowledge of aerosol optical and physical properties in Beijing, especially in pollution and Asian dust events. The averaged aerosol optical depth (AOD) at 675 nm was 0.81 and the Angstrom exponent between 440 nm and 675 nm was 0.99 during experiment. The LIDAR derived AOD at 532 nm in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) was 0.48, which implied that half of the total AOD was contributed by the aerosol in PBL. The corresponding averaged LIDAR ratio and total depolarization ratio (TDR) were 48.5sr and 8.1%. The negative correlation between LIDAR ratio and TDR indicated the LIDAR ratio decreased with aerosol size because of the high TDR associated with nonspherical and large aerosols. The typical volume size distribution of the aerosol clearly demonstrated that the coarse mode radius located near 3 ${\mu}m$ in dust case, a bi-mode with fine particle centered at 0.2 ${\mu}m$ and coarse particle at 2 ${\mu}m$ was the characteristic size distribution in the pollution and clean cases. The different size distributions of aerosol resulted in its different optical properties. The retrieved LIDAR ratio and TDR were 41.1sr and 19.5% for a dust event, 53.8sr and 6.6% for a pollution event as well as 57.3sr and 7.2% for a clean event. In conjunction with the observed surface wind field near the LIDAR site, most of the pollution aerosols were produced locally or transported from the southeast of Beijing, whereas the dust aerosols associated with the clean air mass were transported by the northwesterly or southwesterly winds.

Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has been developing the Camera System for the Total Solar Eclipse (TSE) observation. In 2016 we have assembled a simple camera system consisting of a commercial camera lens, a polarizer, bandpass filters, and a Canon camera to observe the solar corona during the Total Solar Eclipse in Indonesia. For 2017 TSE observation, we have studied and adapted the compact coronagraph design proposed by NASA. The compact coronagraph design dramatically reduces the volume and weight, and used for TSE observation. The camera is used to test and verify key components including function of bandpass filter, polarizer, and CCD during observing the Total Solar Eclipse. In this poster we focus on optical engineering works including designing, analyzing, testing, and building for the TSE observation.

A natural analogue study has been performed for the Koongarra uranium ore deposit in Australia as an international agreement of the Analogue Studies in the Alligator Rivers Region (ASARR). Rocks obtained from the Koongarra deposit, Northern Territory of Australia, were examined in order to understand uranium migration processes of primary and secondary ore-body in both weathered and unweathered zones. Total alpha activities of rock samples were measured to compare the relative amount of uranium in the sample. Uranium distributions have been investigated by means of both the alpha-autoradiography and the fission track registration technique after irradiation in a flux of thermal neutrons (~10$\times$$10^{13}$nㆍ$cm^{-2}$ㆍs$^{-1}$) for 2 minutes. The mineral phases corresponding to the registered alpha-tracks and fission tracks were identified by petrological observation with optical microscope as well as X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis (EPMA). Uranium was found mostly inside of the fracture of the quartzite and its mineral phase was identified as sklodowskite. The mineral phase associated with high uranium concentration was found as illeminite by petrological observation with optical microscope as well as EPMA.
The TXS0506+056 is a blazar and counterpart of the neutrino event IceCube-170922A. It is the first time that the neutrino event and flaring event in electromagnetic wave (EM) coincided. We observed TXS0506+056 with medium-bands in optical using 0.25m and 2.1m telescope at McDonald observatory about a month after the neutrino event. We tracked the variability of SED of the target for three weeks, and our observation showed no abrupt variability in optical range during this period. We concluded that a month after the neutrino event, the TXS0506+056 became less active and shows no feature of the energetic event. We also concluded that the medium-bands are well suited for tracking SEDs of objects. Our result demonstrates the potential of the wide-field 0.25m telescope (5.5 deg^2) for finding transient objects and track the variability of sources like AGNs.

In designing the tracking system of an optical disc drive, it is first necessary to eliminate the undesired influence of any visible mechanical vibrations. In this paper a geometrical method to analyze the frequency response of an elastically supported planar rigid body has been presented. Using the theory of screw, a geometrical expression of a compliant transfer function which describes the effects of the locations of an applied force and observation on the response has been derived. Applying the substructure synthesis method, a technique to stabilize the tracking mechanical system has been presented with a numerical example.

We present the initial results of rest-frame optical spectroscopy of quasars at 3 < z < 5 from the AKARI space telescope mission program QSONG (Quasar Spectroscopic Observation with NIR Grism). QSONG is an AKARI phase-3 mission program which utilizes the unique capability of spectroscopy at 2.5-5 microns, and is adequate for detecting redshifted Balmer lines. We focus on how to overcome the noise induced from instrumental degradation, and report our measurements of supermassive black hole (SMBH) masses with well calibrated optical mass estimators.

Spatial calibrations have been performed on the Medium-sized Aperture Camera (MAC) of the RazakSAT satellite. Topics discussed in this paper include the measurements of system modulation transfer function (MTF), relative pixel line-of-sight (LOS), and end-to-end imaging tests. The MTF measurements were made by capturing the scanned knife-edge image on a pixel, and an issue in the MTF calculation algorithm is discussed. The method used to place the focal plane at the correct focal position is described, since they make use of MTF measurements. Relative LOS measurements are done by theodolite measurements of the telescope. Qualitative ground test result of end-to-end imaging is given.
