  • We measured small optical beam deflection in an image rotating Sagnac interferometer. We used a weak value measurement scheme that involves a pre-selection, weak perturbation, and a post-selection procedure to obtain the amplified value of beam deflection. The amplification factor of the measured beam deflection varied from 11 to 63 depending on the settings of the post-selection polarizer in front of the photodetector and the settings of polarization compensator in the interferometer.

  • A change in object distance would generally change the magnification of an optical system. In this paper, we have proposed and designed a double-Gauss optical system with a fixed magnification and image surface regardless of any change in object distance, according to moving the lens groups a little bit to the front and rear of the stop, independently parallel to the direction of the optical axis. By maintaining a constant size of image formation in spite of various object-distance changes in a projection system such as a head-up display (HUD) or head-mounted display (HMD), we can prevent the field of view from changing while focusing in an HUD or HMD. Also, to check precisely the state of the wiring that connects semiconductor chips and IC circuit boards, we can keep the magnification of the optical system constant, even when the object distance changes due to vertical movement along the optical axis of a testing device. Additionally, if we use this double-Gauss optical system as a vision system in the testing process of lots of electronic boards in a manufacturing system, since we can systematically eliminate additional image processing for visual enhancement of image quality, we can dramatically reduce the testing time for a fast test process. Also, the Gaussian bracket method was used to find the moving distance of each group, to achieve the desired specifications and fix magnification and image surface simultaneously. After the initial design, the optimization of the optical system was performed using the Synopsys optical design software.

  • The film thickness and shape of elastohydrodynamic lubrication is measured by optical interferometer, which is the most precise method for EHL film measurement. However the interpretation of the image pattern from optical viscometer is not easy for two-dimensional shape. A newly developed method of image processing makes it possible to evaluate the film thickness and shape in every point of contact region with two dimensional aspects. In this study, we captured film shape of EHL film from the monochromatic incident light with the Image processing method, which uses phase shift method, and obtained the image analysis method for gray level image in order to qualitatively evaluate film shapes.

  • A new image encoding and identification scheme is proposed for security verification by us-ing a CGH(computer generated hologram), random phase mask, and a correlation technique. The encrypted image, which is attached to the security product, is made by multiplying a QP- CGH(quadratic phase CGI) with a random phase function. The random phase function plays a key role when the encrypted image is decrypted. The encrypted image can be optically recovered by a 2-f imaging system and automatically verified for personal identification by a 4-f correlation system. Simulation results show the proposed method can be used for both the reconstruction of an original image and the recognition of an encrypted image.

  • We have developed a miniature fisheye lens with $190^{\circ}$ field of view operating simultaneously in the visible and the near infrared wavelengths. The modulation transfer function characteristic for the visible wavelength is sufficient for a mega-pixel-grade image sensor. The lens also has a fair resolution in the infrared wavelength region. The calibrated $f-{\theta}$ distortion is less than 5%, and the relative illumination is over 90%. In consequence, a sharp wide-angle image can be obtained which is uniform in brightness over the entire range of field angles. The real image heights for the visible and the near infrared wavelengths have been fitted to polynomial functions of incidence angle with sub-pixel accuracies. Combined with the near equidistance projection scheme of the lens, this lens can be advantageously employed in various image-processing applications requiring a wide-angle lens.

  • Point contact film thickness in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) is analyzed by image processing method for the images from an optical interferometer with monochromatic incident light. Interference between the reflected lights both on half mirror Cr coating of glass disk and on super finished ball makes circular fringes depending on the contact conditions such as sliding velocity, applied load, viscosity-pressure characteristics and viscosity of lubricant under ambient pressure. In this situation the film thickness is regarded as the difference of optical paths between those reflected lights, which make dark and bright fringes with monochromatic incident light. The film thickness is computed by numbering the dark and bright fringe orders and the intensity (gray scale image) in each fringe regime is mapped to the corresponding film thickness. In this work, we developed a measuring technique for EHL film thickness by dividing the image patterns into two typical types under the condition of monochromatic incident light. During the image processing, the captured image is converted into digitally formatted data over the contact area without any loss of the image information of interferogram and it is also interpreted with consistency regardless of the observer's experimental experience. It is expected that the developed image processing method will provide a valuable basis to develop the image processing technique for color fringes, which is generally used for the measurement of relatively thin films in higher resolution.

  • We propose an encryption method using visual cryptography and virtual phase images. In the encryption process, the original image is shared by virtual images and the decryption key image. We multiply the virtual phase images with each complex image, which has the constant value of its sum after performing the phase modulation of the virtual images and the decryption key. The encryption cards are made by Fourier transforming the multiplied images. It is possible to protect information about the original image because the cards do not have any information from the original image. To reconstruct the original image, all the encryption cards are placed on each path of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and then the lights passing through them are summed. Since the summed image is inverse Fourier transformed by a Fourier lens, the phase image is multiplied with the decryption key and the output image is obtained in the form of intensity on the CCD plane. Computer simulations show a good performance of the pro-posed optical security system.
