  • This study suggests a methodology for automatically extracting placing information from 2D reinforced concrete details drawings and generating a 3D reinforcement placing model to develop a mobile augmented reality for bar placing work. To make it easier for users to acquire placing information, it is suggested that users takes pictures of structural drawings using a camera built into a mobile device and extract placing information using vision recognition and the OCR(Optical Character Registration) tool. In addition, an augmented reality app is implemented using the game engine to allow users to automatically generate 3D reinforcement placing model and review the 3D models by superimposing them with real images. Details are described for application to the proposed methodology using the previously developed programming tools, and the results of implementing reinforcement augmented reality models for typical members at construction sites are reviewed. It is expected that the methodology presented as a result of application can be used for learning bar placing work or construction review.

  • An optical method to measure the size and number density of soot aggregates in diesel exhaust has been proposed in this study. Two laser beams in co-axial alignment transmit a soot loaded exhaust gas flow, and the transmittance at each wavelength is detected by a photo diode simultaneously. The volume equivalent diameter and number density of soot aggregates in the optical path can be theoretically given by the transmittance values measured at two wavelengths. A test conducted by a single cylinder, 4 cycle, small and DI diesel engine shows that the temporal variations of the size and number density of soot aggregates in the diesel exhaust can be measured by the proposed method at a transient mode operation. It is found that the volume equivalent diameter varied temporally from 70 to 110 nm during the period that high soot concentration is observed. One can also conclude that the optical length longer than 1 m in the dynamic range regarding this method is preferable for measuring soot concentration at the level of $1\;mg/m^3$.

  • Thermal flowfield of a micro turbojet engine was computationally investigated for exhaust nozzles with different aspect ratio and curvature. Special attention was paid to maximum and average temperature of the nozzle surface and the exhaust nozzle plume. The IR signatures of the micro turbojet engine nozzle were then calculated through the narrow-band model based on thermal flowfield data obtained through CFD analysis. Finally, in order to check the similarity of thermal flowfields and IR signature of the sub-scale micro turbojet engine model and the full-scale UCAV propulsion system, several non-dimensional parameters associated with temperature and optical property of plume were introduced. It was shown that, in spite of some differences in actual values of non-dimensional parameters, the scaling characteristics on spectral feature of IR signature and effects of aspect ratio and curvature of nozzle configuration remain similar in sub-scale and full-scale cases.

  • This study explores the use of Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), processed through Google Earth Engine (GEE), to monitor changes in the areas of Antarctic ice shelves. Focusing on the Campbell Glacier Tongue (CGT) and Drygalski Ice Tongue (DIT),the research utilizes GEE's cloud computing capabilities to handle and analyze large datasets. The study employs Otsu's method for image binarization to distinguish ice shelves from the ocean and mitigates detection errors by averaging monthly images and extracting main regions. Results indicate that the CGT area decreased by approximately 26% from January 2016 to January 2024, primarily due to calving events, while DIT showed a slight increase overall, with notable reduction in recent years. Validation against Sentinel-2 optical images demonstrates high accuracy, underscoring the effectiveness of SAR and GEE for continuous, long-term monitoring of Antarctic ice shelves.

  • The method of test for observing the combustion instability and controling the instability actively by using secondary injection of fuel through flame stabilizer was studied by constructing model combustor of supersonic engine. The frequency of combustion instability was detected by measuring the pressure of combustor using pressure sensor and by optical sensing of flame intensity. Electro-magnetic valve was adopted as actuator for active control and the characteristics of modulated fuel was studied by measured pressure of valve outlet and scattering signal of spray at secondary fuel injection.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the average droplet size distributions of a GDI spray by simultaneous fluorescence/scattering image technique. GDI engine is recently very popular because of high engine efficiency and low emissions. However, the injectors must have good spray characteristics because the fuel is directly injected into the cylinder. The fuel mixtures used in this study were 2% of fluorobenzene, 9% of DEMA(diethyl-methyl-amine) and 89% of hexane by volume. The system for obtaining 2-D fluorescence/scattering images of fuel spray was constituted of a laser sheet, a doubling prism, optical filters, and an ICCD camera. Using the ratio of the fluorescence to the scattering intensities, SMD distributions were obtained. SMD measured by the technique was compared with that obtained by PDA. It was found that average droplet size was bigger at spray center in the early stage of injection and at the outer periphery of the spray in the late stage of injection.

  • The capability of pilot injection with small fuel quantity at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature of the common rail system. The purpose of the pilot injection is to lower the engine noise and to reduce the NOx emissions. This study describes the pilot spray structure characteristics of the common-rail diesel injectors, solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type, with different electric driving characteristics So, three common-rail injectors with different electric current wave were used in this study. The pilot spray characteristics such as spray speed, spray tip penetration, and spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. Also the CFD analysis was carried out for fuel behavior under high pressure in between needle and nozzle of solenoid-driven injector to know the condition of initial injection at experiment test. It was found that pilot injection of common-rail system was effected by rate of injection and temperature of injected fuel and electrical characteristic of the driven injector.

  • Objectives: Lung cancer occurred with worker working in an urban bus garage. A survey was conducted to investigate whether lung cancer had causal relationship with work. Exposure to asbestos and diesel engine exhaust were suspected. Methods: Airborne asbestos was sampled on membrane filter and analyzed using phase-contrast microscopy. Airborne diesel exhaust was sampled using quartz filter and analyzed with thermal-optical analyzer. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons was sampled using PTFE filter and XAD-2 tube and analyzed with gas chromatography-mass selective detector. Results: Airborne asbestos concentration was under 0.01 fiber/cc. Worker who warmed up an engine of urban bus for 2 hours was exposed to elemental carbon concentration, $15.5{\mu}g/m^3$. Only naphtalene among polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons was detected. Conclusions: It was difficult to conclude about worker exposure to asbestos because working hour related asbestos was too short. In reviewing papers, the exposure to asbestos over 0.01 fiber/cc during exchange brake lining was found. It was identified that worker's occupational exposure to diesel exhaust based on elemental carbon was higher than the other occupational exposure to diesel exhaust.

  • An experimental study was performed to assess the effect of diesel and JP-8 aviation fuel on the spray characteristics, performance and emissions in a single cylinder optical diesel engine. Both fuels were injected via an 8-hole solenoid-driven injector in a common-rail injection system. For better understanding of spray development, the macroscopic images were captured with high speed camera, offered evidences for the results of performance and emissions. From macroscopic spray images, the spray tip penetration of JP-8 shorter than that of diesel while spray angle of JP-8 was wider than that of diesel. It indicates that the vaporization of JP-8 is superior to that of diesel. The lower cetane number of JP-8 resulted in increased portion of premixed combustion. The IMEP with JP-8 is lower than that of diesel-fueled engine. Especially, using JP-8 has a potential for reducing soot.
