Real-time three-dimensional shape measurement is becoming increasingly important in various fields, including medical sciences, high-technology industry, and microscale measurements. However, there are not so many 3D profile tools specially designed for specifically narrow space, for example, to scan the tooth shape of a human jaw. In this paper, a real-time 3D intraoral scanner is proposed for the measurement of tooth profile in the mouth cavity. The proposed system comprises a laser diode beam, a micro charge-coupled device, a graticule, a piezoelectric transducer, a set of optical lenses, and a polhemus device sensor. The phase-shifting technique is used along with an accurate calibration method for the measurement of the tooth profile. Experimental and theoretical inspection of the phase-to-coordinate relation is presented. In addition, a nonlinear system model is developed for collimating illumination that gives the more accurate mathematical representation of the system, thus improves the shape measurement accuracy. Experiment results are presented to verify the feasibility and performance of the developed system. The experimental results indicate that overall measurement error accuracy can be controlled within 0.4 mm with a variability of ${\pm}0.01$.
Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is a technique to visualize specific DNA/RNA sequences within the cell nuclei and provide the presence, location and structural integrity of genes on chromosomes. A confocal Whole Slide Imaging (WSI) scanner technology has superior depth resolution compared to wide-field fluorescence imaging. Confocal WSI has the ability to perform serial optical sections with specimen imaging, which is critical for 3D tissue reconstruction for volumetric spatial analysis. The standard clinical manual scoring for FISH is labor-intensive, time-consuming and subjective. Application of multi-gene FISH analysis alongside 3D imaging, significantly increase the level of complexity required for an accurate 3D analysis. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish automated 3D FISH scoring for z-stack images from confocal WSI scanner. The algorithm and the application we developed, SHIMARIS PAFQ, successfully employs 3D calculations for clear individual cell nuclei segmentation, gene signals detection and distribution of break-apart probes signal patterns, including standard break-apart, and variant patterns due to truncation, and deletion, etc. The analysis was accurate and precise when compared with ground truth clinical manual counting and scoring reported in ten lymphoma and solid tumors cases. The algorithm and the application we developed, SHIMARIS PAFQ, is objective and more efficient than the conventional procedure. It enables the automated counting of more nuclei, precisely detecting additional abnormal signal variations in nuclei patterns and analyzes gigabyte multi-layer stacking imaging data of tissue samples from patients. Currently, we are developing a deep learning algorithm for automated tumor area detection to be integrated with SHIMARIS PAFQ.

The scanning quality can be influenced by reflective abilities of a surface. Transparency and glossiness of a surface can highly limit the scanning results. Various techniques have been developed to solve problems of reflective and transparent surfaces. As one of the most feasible and convenient solutions, a thin layer of coating with proper specifications is sprayed on surface for eliminating the problems of the surfaces. As the main goal is to keep the object geometry unchanged, then it is important to coat the surface with layers less than one micrometer in thickness. For this purpose, a newly designed atomization-based spray system has been developed and tested in sets of experiments to study its efficiency on scanning results while objects with the surface are in use. This paper presents the spray design process and then studies and compares the 3D scanning results of the surfaces coated with atomization-based and aerosol sprays.

The demand for three-dimensional (3D) shape measurements is increasing in a variety of fields, including the manufacture of molds and dies. The most popular technology for 3D shape measurement is the coordinate measuring machine (CMM) with a contact trigger probe. Although a CMM provides a high degree of accuracy, it is inefficient due to its long measuring time. It also has difficulty measuring soft objects that can be deformed by the touch of the contact probe. In addition, a CMM cannot digitize areas that are difficult to reach, and cannot capture very minute details on the surface of complex parts. For these reasons, optical non-contact measurement techniques are receiving more attention since they eliminate most of the problems associated with contact methods. Laser scanning is emerging as one of the more promising non-contact measurement techniques. This paper describes various acquisition considerations for laser scanning, including the accuracy of the 3D scan data, which depends on the charge-coupled device (CCD) gain and noise. The CCD gain and noise of a 3D laser scanner are varied while keeping the other conditions constant, and the measurement results are compared to the dimensions of a standard model. The experimental results show that a considerable time savings and an optimum degree of accuracy are possible by selecting the proper CCD gain and noise.
Using an optical 3D scanning device to collect data from a diffused reflection surface is very difficult. To solve this problem, there are many applications including a spray-type developer and silicon molds. However, using a developer can cause chemical reactions between objects and particles of the developer and uneven surfaces on the object. To overcome these problems, we suggest an electrostatic powder coating method for even coating of particles onto surfaces for collecting 3D shape data. We have developed an automatic, electrostatic powder-coating machine and performed three different experiments to compare this system with a laser interferometer and a T-scan 3D scanner. As a result, we could ascertain the various characteristics of this new method, including good sensitivity for the various surface states of the bare surface, developer, and electrostatic powder coating. Finally, we verified the outstanding scanning performance and were able to demonstrate that this method achieves quality than traditional methods.
PURPOSE. The present study compared the accuracy between digital and conventional implant impressions. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The experimental models were divided into six groups depending on the implant location and the scanning span. Digital impressions were captured using the intraoral optical scanner TRIOS (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark). Conventional impressions were taken with the monophase impression material based on addition-cured silicones, Honigum-Mono (DMG, Hamburg, Germany). A high-precision laboratory scanner D900 (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) was used to obtain digital data of resin models and stone casts. Surface tessellation language (STL) datasets from scanner were imported into the analysis software Geomagic Qualify 14 (3D Systems, Rock Hill, SC, USA), and scan body deviations were determined through two-dimensional and three-dimensional analyses. Each scan body was measured five times. The Sidak t test was used to analyze the experimental data. RESULTS. Implant position and scanning distance affected the impression accuracy. For a unilateral arch implant and the mandible models with two implants, no significant difference was observed in the accuracy between the digital and conventional implant impressions on scan bodies; however, the corresponding differences for trans-arch implants and mandible with six implants were extremely significant (P<.001). CONCLUSION. For short-span scanning, the accuracy of digital and conventional implant impressions did not differ significantly. For long-span scanning, the precision of digital impressions was significantly inferior to that of the traditional impressions.
With recent increased demand for reverse engineering in dental machining, the 3D laser scanner is widely used for inspection of artificial pontic. In order to overcome the optical drawback of laser scanner, such as irregular scatter, direction of beam, and the influence of surface integrity, it is developed in this study a new 3D measuring system for artificial pontic using spherical coordinate system mechanism by point laser sensor, which keeps the direction of beam normal to surface consistently. The comprehensive integrated system is established to evaluate the improvement of accuracy with data acquisition system. The experimental results for measuring a master ball and pontic models shows the excellent form accuracy and repeatability compared with conventional apparatus. Also, these results shows the possibility to apply this system for the measuring purpose within 0.05mm accuracy of pontic at the sharp edge or margin contour, which was difficult to measure at the conventional systems.
In the early days of laser invention, it was simply used as a measuring tool, but as lasers became more common, they became an indispensable processing tool in the industry. Short-wavelength lasers are used to make patterns on wafers used in semiconductors depending on the wavelength, such as CO2 laser, YAG laser, green laser, and UV laser. At first, the hole of the PCB board mainly used for electronic parts was not thin and the hole size was large, so a mechanical drill was used. However, in order to realize product miniaturization and high integration, small hole processing lasers have become essential, and pattern exposure for small hole sizes has become essential. This paper intends to analyze the characteristics through patterns by exposing the PCB substrate through DMD and polygon scanner, which are different optical systems. Since the optical systems are different, the size of the patterns was made the same, and exposure was performed under the optimal conditions for each system. Pattern characteristics were analyzed through a 3D profiler. As a result of the analysis, there was no significant difference in line width between the two systems. However, it was confirmed that dmd had better pattern precision and polygon scanner had better productivity.
