  • In this paper, we investigated a novel UV sensor using evanescent field coupling between the side polished fiber and photo-functional polymer waveguide. It was found that resonant wavelength shifts occur due to variation in the refractive index of polymer planar waveguide for its photo-functional properties on exposed UV. Spiroxazine (photochromic dye) was used as the planar waveguide. The resonant wavelength responses were exhibited at 1.44 nm/mW, 1.64 nm/mW, and 1.78 nm/mW when UV irradiations were exposed for 20 seconds, 30 seconds, and 40 seconds, respectively. The recovery time of sensor was independent of UV exposure power and 90% recovery time was 100 seconds.

  • This is the study for developing the hetero-core optical fiber sensors which are purpose to measure the prestress of PSC bridges during the life cycle period. The goal of this study is to improve the resolution of hetero-core sensors. As a result of the test, it is possible to measure the displacement in $2{\mu}m$ increments. In other words, if the length of the sensor module is 30cm, it is possible to measure the prestress variations in 0.2MPa increments at specified compressive strength of concrete(fck) of 40MPa by Hook's Law. So it can be useful for development of a sensor module measuring internal prestress measurement.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the handy non-contact measurement device of the surface roughness by using the optical fiber sensor. The advantages of fiber optic sensors are high-speed responsibility, non-effect of the magnetic, convenience of the product and high precision. The measurement theory for surface roughness of optical fiber sensor is one to one correspondence between the reflected light intensity based on the surface roughness of the object and the measurement value of previously known for surface roughness. The reflected light intensity was determined using the distance to the surface from the sensor probe and the limit reflection angle based on the surface roughness. Therefore, in this study, the sensor probe was produced for determining the value of surface roughness only using the limit reflection angle based on the surface roughness with the fixed distance from the surface. A prototype measurement system was composed of a transmitting part, a receiving part and a signal processing circuit. The materials of standard measurement which was used in this experiment were SM45C, STS303 and Al60. According to the results of this study, approximation surface roughness formulas which was deduced from the correlation of between the standard surface roughness and the sensing output were verified that they were effect against the surface roughness measurement value of the option sample. And handy optical fiber surface roughness measurement device which was produced by an order was verified that it was effect for measuring of the precision surface roughness.

  • In this paper, we described the laboratory layout of the optical CT in connection with the measurement of large current based on Magneto-Optic Effects. It was used He-Ne laser for light source and was used PIN-Photodiode for light receiver. The sensing section was organized by winding optical fiber around conductor on the concept that the rotation angle of polarizing axis by Faraday Effect is proportional to the applied current in to conduction. The optical signal passed through optical fiber sensor was induced to analyzer arranged in the direction of $\theta$ for input polarization, and then analyzed its rotation angle and researched on operating characteristics of optical CT for 60[Hz] AC current measurement from l00[A] to 1000[A] was carried out. In this results, the output signals induced linearly with the current and proved that the intensity is increased with increasing turns of fiber through output differences which in accordance with turns of fiber and we verified that there is not only difference of the output with the medium between electric field and optical fiber, but also the lineality. Measuring the references and output intensities of the optical CT, ratio errors were within $\pm$7%. This confirmed that error rate will be improved by each medium and turns.

  • To investigate the causes of the thermal deformations of packaging materials when microwave-heating ready-to-eat sauce products packaged in stand-up pouches, patterns of temperature changes were determined using an infra-red thermal imaging camera, a thermo-sensitive tape, and a fiver-optic thermometer. The temperature distributions of spicy chicken sauce and Indian curry samples in a stand-up pouch were found to be uneven during micrewave heating. A sharp increase in the temperature was detected, especially above the filling layers and in the corners of sealing layers of the package. The temperature measurements using an infra-red thermal imaging camera are restricted to the surface, and therefore might underestimate the actual temperature. Using a thermo-sensitive tape, temperature up to $200^{\circ}C$ were measured in the spicy chicken sauce sample showing package deformation. When the temperature is measured using a fiber-optic thermometer, it is crucial to have precise sensor performance to accurately measure the temperature in a narrow hot-spot area of the package. In this experiment, the fiber-optic thermometer was attached to a GaAs crystal sensor, which obtained more sensitive and accurate temperature measurements than those by a convectional sensor.

  • Previous shape sensors including bend sensors and optic fiber based sensors are widely used in various applications including goniometer and surgical robots. But theses sensors have large nonlinearity, limited in the range of sensing curvature, and sometimes are expensive. This study suggests a new concept of bend sensor using cable-conduit which consists of the outer sheath and the inner wire. The outer sheath is made of helical coil whose length of the central line changes as the sheath bends. This length change of the central line can be measured with the length change of the inner cable. The modeling and the experimental results show that the output signal of the proposed sensor is linearly related with the bend angle of the sheath with root mean square error of 5.3% of $450^{\circ}$ sensing range. Also the polynomial calibration of the sensor can decrease the root mean square error to 2.1% of the full sensing range.

  • The theoretical formulations are derived for calculating optical power change for intensity modulated fiber optical microphone. The optical power change is due to optical paths, misalignment and geometry of optical coupler. Based on the theoretical equations, three different optical couplers are simulated with respect to several angles of optical couplers. In order to evaluate the formulation, a multi-mode to multi-mode coupler which is one of abovementioned optical couplers is designed and characterized by carving out both static experiments and dynamic experiments. Considering experimental results, this paper conclude that the theoretical formulations is very useful for design optical coupler and this kind of fiber optic sensor is adequate to microphone.

  • We present real.time, rapid detection of Mycoplasma pneumonia in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) inside a Y.channel polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic device by means of optical fiber monitoring of latex immunoagglutination. The latex immunoagglutination assay was performed with serially diluted Mycoplasma pneumonia solutions using highly carboxylated polystyrene particles of 390nm and 500nm diameter conjugated with monoclonal anti. Mycoplasma pneumonia . Proximity optical fibers were located around the viewing cell of the device, which were used to measure the increase in 45${\b{o}}$ forward light scattering of the immunoagglutinated particles. The detection limit was less than 50 $pgml^{-1}$ both for 390nm and 500nm microspheres with the detection time less than 90 seconds.

  • Fiber optic sensor using fiber Bragg grating(FBG) probes is used for monitoring strain and temperature distributed on the wide surfaces of large structures. In this paper, in order to use many FBG probes in one optical fiber line, we propose a complex multiplexing technology which is composed of two techniques, one is time division multiplexing and another is wavelength division multiplexing. However, we only investigate the characteristics of time division multiplexing because FBG sensors basically can be operated by wavelength division multiplexing. We calculate the optimal reflectivities and the lengthwise location of five FBG probes in serial connection in order to obtain the unique reflected intensities from the FBG probes. We fabricate five FBG probes with the reflectivities of 13%, 16%, 25%, 40% and 80%, which are determined by the theoretical calculation, and observe the signal reflected from each FBG in the time domain from the experiment. There are differences between experimental and theoretical results caused by the signal noise and the differences of reflectivities of FBG probes. But the experimental results shows the reflected signals of five FBG probes which prove the availability of complex multiplexing.
