Nine new records of plants from Bhutan

  • Discoveries and new records of plants specifically provide a basis for empirical data to enable in-depth studies of the ecology, distribution, conservation, applications, and threats to such plants. However, many unexplored regions of Bhutan exist in which several plants have yet to be described and documented. Several species reported elsewhere in the Himalayan region with similar climatic conditions are likely to occur in Bhutan as well, indicating a need to corroborate their presence. To explore this, an opportunistic survey was employed, and we provide nine new records of plant species for Bhutan. Of the nine species, three belonged to the Lauraceae family, with the rest from the Aristolochiaceae, Asparagaceae, Lamiaceae, Phyllanthaceae, Sapindaceae, and Urticaceae families. This paper adds nine additional species of plants to the flora of Bhutan. We also report here ethnobotanical applications of these species, providing insight into how communities interact with environmental resources and have the potential to integrate traditional knowledge into scientific understanding, ultimately to reinforce sustainable biocultural conservation at the local level.

천수만 조하대 연성저질의 저서환경과 저서동물 군집의 시${\cdot}$공간적 양상 (Spatio- and temporal patterns of benthic environment and macrobenthos community on subtidal soft-bottom in Chonsu Bay, Korea)

  • 본 조사는 천수만의 저서환경과 저서동물의 시${\cdot}$공간적인 분포를 알아보기 위해 실시하였다. 계절별 표${\cdot}$저층간의 수온차이는 나타나지 않았으며, 여름철 방조제 부근에서 발생한 방류의 영향으로 표층 염분도가 감소하는 양상을 보였다. 저층용존산소의 경우 방조제 부근에서 감소하였으며, 빈산소 수괴가 형성되었다. 입도 조성의 경우 만입구보다는 방조제 부근에서 더욱 세립한 것으로 나타났으며, 유기물 함량의 경우도 만 입구에서 감소하였다. 조사 기간 중 총 311종, 769$ ind./m^2$의 저서동물이 채집되었다. 다모류가 종 수와 서식밀도에서 높은 비중을 차지하였다. 종 수는 방조제 부근에서 만 입구로 갈수록 증가하는 공간적인 양상을 보였으며, 서식밀도는 여름철 가입에 따른 계절적인 양상을 나타냈다. 이 시기에 Lumbrineris longifolia, Theora fragilis등 기회종이 대규모로 가입되었다. 집괴분석에 의해 공간적으로 5개 군집으로 나누어졌다. 방조제 부근은 주로 기회종으로 구성되었으며, 만 중앙부는 Stemaspis scutata, Paraprionospio pinnata, 만 입구는 Mediomastus califomiensis, Nephtys polybranchia 등이 우점종으로 나타났다. 결과적으로 천수만은 계절별 환경변화 공간적 차이가 종조성에 영향을 주고 있는 것으로 보이며, 시공간적으로 저서 생태계의 안정성에 영향을 미치는 것으로 보인다.

Microbiological Characteristics of Nocardia takedensis Isolated from Skin Lesion, in Korea

  • Nocardia species (spp.) are opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised hosts. The genus Nocardia contains more than 70 species. Nocardia takedensis has been recently reported as a new species of the genus Nocardia. In this study, we describes the first clinical isolate of N. takedensis from the skin lesion in Busan, Korea. For the identification of clinical isolate to the species level as N. takedensis, classical methods (colony morphology, biochemical characteristics, and antimicrobial susceptibility), molecular method (16S rRNA gene sequencing), and MS (mass spectrometry) analysis were conducted. Clinical isolates grew slowly on the culture media (5% sheep blood agar and chocolate agar) under 5% $CO_2$ condition. Especially, carotene pigmentation was detected well on the media. Using mass spectrometry, Nocardia isolate was not identified to the species level. However, molecular method based on 16S rRNA sequencing confirmed the isolate as N. takedensis correctly. N. takedensis isolate was partial positive for acid-fast bacilli on the Ziehl-Neelsen method. And it was observed to be resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and ciprofloxacin. Our results provide useful information to develop optimal identification protocol of N. takedensis in clinical diagnostic laboratories.

추자도 조간대 해조류의 종조성과 생물량 (Species Composition and Biomass of Intertidal Seaweeds in Chuja Island)

  • The marine benthic algal flora and biomass of Chuja Island, southern coast of Korea, was investigated. The collections of intertidal marine algae were made at two sites, Yecho of Hachujado and Hupo of Sangchujado, from October 2006 to July 2007. A total of 162 species, including 15 green, 47 brown and 100 red algae, were identified in this study. The occurrence of species according to season was abundant during spring to summer and less in autumn. The vertical distribution of intertidal zone in Chujado was characterized by Gloiopeltis spp., Myelophycus simplex, Ishige okamurae, Chondrus ocellatus, Grateloupia elliptica, Hizikia fusiformis and Sargassum spp. The average biomass of macroalgae was measured as 400 g wet wt m$^{-2}$. The dominant species based on the biomass were Sargassum yezoense, S. coreanum and Hizikia fusiformis. ESG II (ecological state group) as an opportunistic species, including sheet form, filamentous form, and coarsely branched form, occurred 85.8% in the intertidal seaweeds. These results provide a baseline for future monitoring studies in the Chuja Island.

양양 남대천 하구역의 여름철 대형저서동물 군집의 생태학적 특성 (An Ecological Feature of Benthic Macrofauna during Summer 1997 in Namdaechon Estuary, Yangyang, Korea)

  • 본 연구는 양양 남대천 하구역 대형저서동물의 생태학적 연구를 위하여 1997년 9월 23일 개량된 van Veen 그랩을 이용하여 총 11개 정점을 대상으로 현장조사를 실시하였다. 조사 지역에서 총 11종, 정점당 평균 345 개체/$m^2$ 및 67.148 g WWt/$m^2$이 채집되었다. 종 수, 개체수 및 생물량에 있어서 환형동물, 절지동물과 연체동물이 $95{\%}$ 이상의 점유율을 나타냈다. 양양 남대천 하구역은 대형저서동물의 다양성 측면에서 매우 빈약한 생물상 (生物相)을 보였으며, 개체수면에서는 다모류의 Heteromastus filiformis, Hediste japonica, Eteone longa, 빈모류의 Oilgochaeta Sp., 연체동물의 Corbicula japonica, 그리고 절지동물의 Cyathura higoensis 등이 우점종으로 나타났다. 한편, 본 조사지역은 소상하는 연어 채포를 위해 쌓아놓은 둑 근처의 수심 7m 정도되는 지역이 여름철 성층 (成層, stratifiestion) 형성으로 인한 저층수의 환경 악화로 대형저서동물이 출현하지 않는 무생물구역 (無生物區域, azoic zone)으로 나타났으며, 주변의 정점에서도 일부 기회종 (opportunistic species)들이 높은 밀도를 나타내는 오염역 (汚染域, Polluted Zone)이 출현하고 있어 물리적 환경 변화에 따라 국지적으로 이러한 중오염역 (重汚染域, Very Polluted Zone)이 확산되는 방향으로의 대형저서동물의 생태적인 천이가 일어날 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

Bisifusarium Delphinoides, an Emerging Opportunistic Pathogen in a Burn Patient with Diabetes Mellitus

  • An 82-year-old man with diabetes was admitted to the emergency department with a third-degree burn on his left leg. The deep swab specimen from his left leg was cultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar without cycloheximide and incubated at $25^{\circ}C$ for 5 days. On the basis of morphological characteristics and multigene phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA and partial fragments of beta-tubulin and translation elongation factor 1-alpha, the causal agent of fungal skin infection was identified as Bisifusarium delphinoides, which was newly introduced by accommodating a Fusarium dimerum species complex. Thus, we describe here the first case of skin infection caused by B. delphinoides on a burn patient with diabetes mellitus based on morphological observation and molecular analysis.

한국의 남해안과 서해안에 생육하는 지충이(Sargassum thunbergii)의 착생 해조류의 종조성 (Epiphytic Algae Growing on Sargassum thunbergii in Southern and Western Coasts of Korea)

  • 갈조류 지충이의 표면에 부착하는 착생해조류의 종수, 풍부도, 부착위치 및 기능형을 조사하기 위하여 남해안 9개 무인도와 서해안의 격포 해안에서 2001년 여름에 지충이를 채취하였다. 지충이에 착생하는 해조류는 총 25종이 동정되었는데, 분류군 별로는 녹조류 6종(24%), 갈조류 2종(8%), 홍조류 17종(68%) 이었고 남해군의 장고섬, 노루섬, 소목과도에서 생육하는 지충이에 가장 많은 9종이 착생하였다. 착생 해조류 중에서 애기가시덤불, 구멍갈파래, 가위갯쇠털의 순으로 출현 빈도가 높았으며 애기가시덤불은 모든 해안에서 발견되었다. 또한 애기가시덤불, 두갈래사슬풀, 애기서실은 지충이 엽체의 하부에, 붉은실류는 상부에 부착하여 생육하였다. 기능형으로는 막상형 8%, 사상형 52%, 성긴분지형 32%, 유절석회조형 8%가 존재하였으며 각상형과 혁질형 해조류는 없었다. 위다년생인 지충이의 착생해조류는 봄과 여름에 관찰되는 바위두룩과 같은 종이나 사상형의 일년생 해조류가 주로 나타났으며, 유성생식을 하는 이들은 포자생성 및 방출을 숙주 해조류인 지충이의 엽체가 탈락되는 늦가을 이전에 일어난다.

Evaluation of Microbial Load in Oropharyngeal Mucosa from Tannery Workers

  • Background: Animal skin provides an ideal medium for the propagation of microorganisms and it is used like raw material in the tannery and footware industry. The aim of this study was to evaluate and identify the microbial load in oropharyngeal mucosa of tannery employees. Methods: The health risk was estimated based on the identification of microorganisms found in the oropharyngeal mucosa samples. The study was conducted in a tanners group and a control group. Samples were taken from oropharyngeal mucosa and inoculated on plates with selective medium. In the samples, bacteria were identified by 16S ribosomal DNA analysis and the yeasts through a presumptive method. In addition, the sensitivity of these microorganisms to antibiotics/antifungals was evaluated. Results: The identified bacteria belonged to the families Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Neisseriaceae, Alcaligenaceae, Moraxellaceae, and Xanthomonadaceae, of which some species are considered as pathogenic or opportunistic microorganisms; these bacteria were not present in the control group. Forty-two percent of bacteria identified in the tanners group are correlated with respiratory diseases. Yeasts were also identified, including the following species: Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis, Candida albicans, and Candida krusei. Regarding the sensitivity test of bacteria identified in the tanners group, 90% showed sensitivity to piperacillin/tazobactam, 87% showed sensitivity to ticarcillin/clavulanic acid, 74% showed sensitivity to ampicillin/sulbactam, and 58% showed sensitivity to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. Conclusion: Several of the bacteria and yeast identified in the oropharyngeal mucosa of tanners have been correlated with infections in humans and have already been reported as airborne microorganisms in this working environment, representing a health risk for workers.

급격한 조석 감소에 의한 새만금 갯벌 대형저서동물 변화 (Changes in Benthic Macrofauna of the Saemangeum Tidal Flat as Result of a Drastic Tidal Reduction)

  • Tidal ranges of inner Saemangeum were largely reduced after the final dyke enclosure, resulting in the former tidal flats becoming either permanently exposed, still influenced by changing tide, or permanently submerged. The effect of reduced tidal range on survival and population stability of tidal flat macrofauna were investigated at three shifted habitats after the dyke completion. At the exposed area, several species survived for 80 days after the dyke enclosure. However, within 120 days, all macrofauna died off due to the elevated temperature during summer. At the intertidal area, some species were maintained until 170 days after the dyke enclosure with a large decrease of the faunal abundance. Species of the submerged area were seen to be more tolerant of the changed environments. The opportunistic species, such as Sinocorophium sinensis, Theora fragilis and Pseudopolydora Kempi, were massively introduced into the submerged area after the dyke enclosure, in which the benthic ecosystem was severely disturbed.

진해만 특별관리해역의 대형저서동물의 시공간 분포 (Spatio-temporal Distribution of Macrobenthic Communities in Jinhae Bay, Korea)

  • In order to determine the spatio-temporal distribution of macrobenthic faunal communities in Jinhae Bay, quantitative faunal samples were collected seasonally at 23 sites in Jinhae Bay from February, 2011 to November, 2012. Sediment facies were found to be mud except for those at Chilcheon-do near Geoje Island. Mean values of TOC (%) ranged between 1.3 and 3.6%, and these are the highest values recorded excluding special management areas in Korea. Hypoxia occurred every summer in the whole areas of Jinhae Bay except around Geoje Island in the bay mouth. Due to the summer hypoxia, species richness, density and biomass also declined during the summer in Jinhae Bay. Opportunistic species such as Paraprionospio patiens, Sigambra bassi, Nectoneanthes oxypoda and Theora fragilis occurred as the dominant species before and after the hypoxia. However, Capitella capitata appeared as a dominant species only during the winter-spring season every year. From cluster analysis, Jinhae Bay could be divided into two sites groups: one group occupied the normoxic zone and the other one located in the hypoxic zone.
